New World with Four Husbands-Chapter 668: Peaceful
The hours passed by quickly, the day giving way to darkness as the sun began to set, casting the lands in shadows.
After two long, enlightening hours, the discussion about ice cream had finally ended, each topic about the frozen dessert fully exhausted and covered from what Coco could tell.
She wasn’t that knowledgeable about ice cream, but she knows enough.
After that hearty topic, the wagon grew quiet, but the atmosphere was different now— lighter and more comfortable.
There was still curiosity, there was still fascination, but the edge that had once been there was gone.
Coco let her head roll limply onto Kairo’s shoulder, her eyelids drooping heavily as exhaustion settled in. She always knew that talking and socializing is tiring, but not to this extent.
The warmth radiating from the hybrid and the steady rocking of the wagon made it impossible to resist the pull of sleep, pulling her into a drowsy haze.
The conversation had been interesting, but she couldn’t deny that she was exhausted.
A soft sigh escaped her lips and Alhai noticed immediately, his sharp gaze flickering over her slumped form.
"Take a nap, Coco." He murmured, his voice quiet. "We’ll be on the road for a couple more hours."
After hearing Alhai’s words and feeling Coco’s weight against him, Kairo wrapped an arm around her without looking, instinctively pulling her closer to his body.
She didn’t protest— couldn’t, really, because the weight of her fatigue was too much.
So, with a small, grateful hum, she let her eyes drift shut, her breathing evening out almost immediately.
Kairo adjusted slightly, allowing her to lean more comfortably against him and just like that, she was out. The mediators exchanged glances, but no one spoke. The wagon rolled on and the silence that followed was peaceful.
Jacques and Jonathan couldn’t help, but feel their eyelids growing heavy too.
They glanced at each other and almost immediately, a silent agreement passed between them, leading them to lean their heads against Renaldo, who was sitting between them.
Kairo caught the small action, his eyes flicking to them in slight surprise.
Quizen and Zaque couldn’t help, but notice the look of amusement on Kairo’s face, their gazes instinctively following his line of sight.
As their eyes landed on the trio, Zaque shook his head with a faint sigh while Quizen stifled a laugh under his breath.
He couldn’t help, but shoot Renaldo a quick, teasing wiggle of his eyebrows to which Renaldo rolled his eyes at, but didn’t move, clearly trying to keep a stoic expression even as he felt his face warm slightly at the attention.
But he didn’t push them away and that alone was enough to say something.
Kairo’s smile widened slightly at their reaction, finding happiness in their silent exchange.
The wagon fell into a comfortable quiet once more, not like it was broken in the first place.
Both Coco and Jacques had succumbed to sleep, and without their energy, the atmosphere inside the wagon has lessened, missing their earlier brightness.
Coco was curled against Kairo with her face buried in the collar of her coat and Jacques was slumped against Renaldo, her head lolling slightly with the wagon’s movement.
The two of them were, unbeknownst to them, the ones who kept the mood lively, who filled the silence with laughter or relentless questions.
Without them? It was peaceful, but it was also.. A little too quiet.
But hearing Coco’s soft, even breaths and occasional soft grumbles along with Jacques’ occasional muttering in her sleep, which was something unintelligible.. It broke the wagon’s silence.
Jonathan is drowsy, but hasn’t fallen asleep yet. "I miss the noise."
Quizen hummed as he wordlessly agreed, his own head falling onto Zaque’s shoulder. "Same.. I miss my wife’s giggle and voice already. She’s tired though, so I have to wait until she wakes up and gets into the mood to talk again."
The four husbands stared at the sleeping Coco, their expressions softening as they took in her peaceful face— each of them was momentarily struck by the sight, their hearts skipping a beat at how adorable she looked in her sleep, affection and protection welling up within them.
Kairo found himself in a similar state, his expression still neutral, but his heart thumping in his chest, because the mere sight of Coco curled against him, so utterly trusting and comfortable, sent warmth flooding through his chest
The hybrid watched Coco’s sleeping form as closely as he could, burning the sight in his mind and locking it in place.
He watched closely. He watched the way her breathing was in a steady rhythm, the way she fit against him, the way her breaths fanned softly against his coat, the way her lashes rested against her cheeks like delicate shadow.. He watched her and everything sent a small rush of feelings through him.
He gently adjusted himself again, allowing her to rest more comfortably against him without his eyes ever leaving her face.
He couldn’t believe it.. That he was hers, that she had chosen him.
His fingers twitched where they rested at her and his side— aching to brush a strand of hair from her face, to trace the curve of her cheek.
But he resisted, and instead, he exhaled slowly.
With one more quiet glance at Coco’s face, Kairo finally wrenched his gaze away, turning to look out the wagon, the curtains fluttering lightly in the cool night breeze, allowing him a glimpse of the world outside.
The road and the side are bathed in shadow, faint traces of moonlight filtering through the dense trees that surround the path.
Everything was quiet, eerily so, except for the steady clop of the horses’ hooves and the sound of the wagon’s rattling wheels, and it wasn’t just him. The others had also taken turns looking out the vehicle, each stealing glances at the passing roadside.
Of course, they didn’t forget to glance at Coco, but other than that, the night rolled in peacefully.
