Chapter 47: A Special Kind of Awakener

The hallway fell into a strange hush.

Students who had been pretending not to watch suddenly found the classroom walls fascinating—though their eyes kept drifting toward the entrance.

"Wow," Alina muttered under her breath. "The circus really followed us."

Damien pushed off the wall first.

A dark frown shadowed his face, and his aura spilled in small, relentless waves. A proof of just how foul his mood was.

No wonder no student dared to approach them.

"You—"

"You should go see Emily."

Damien’s words died in his throat under Severine’s calm voice.

His mouth closed slowly. The unfinished sentence deepened his frown.

"Bring some clothes too," Severine added, stopping a few inches away from him.

From the faint amusement in Emmett’s green eyes, she could more or less guess who had soured Damien’s mood earlier.

In moments like this, Emmett was particularly tolerable.

"What’s wrong with her?" Damien demanded, his thoughts churned with implications.

There weren’t many things that could hurt Emily inside the academy. She was always surrounded by her clique, always protected.

So why would she need clothes?

But what irritated him more wasn’t the concern.

It was the interruption.

He had been standing there first, getting the admiring glances and shy greetings— the usual.

Then this slippery green loach showed up.

In two minutes alone, at least six different girls had approached Emmett. All of them exes.

It was only his coercions that stopped those idiots from approaching. What a pervert...

Despite knowing that Damien wanted to talk to Severine, this bastard Emmett remained there, smiling like a shiny snake.

Worse yet, Emmett’s crazy fans, which meant nearly half the students were watching.

Damien hated being interrupted. Hated being made to feel sidelined.

Coupled with Severine’s cold indifference, the irritation fermented into anger.

His jaw tightened.

"I’ll deal with you later," he said, chewing the words before spitting them out.

His gaze lingered on Severine for a second too long.

Then he snorted softly, eyes flicking toward Emmett.

"I didn’t know you liked used things. Then again—"

His gaze dragged over Severine. "A pet eats whatever its owner feeds it."

With that, he turned sharply and strode down the hallway. His footsteps thudded against the floor, sending the other students into a run just to avoid him.

Alina clicked her tongue. If it were before, she might have scolded Damien on the spot, cursed him to his seven generations.

Nonetheless, remembering rules that there were no rules, she remained silent.

These twins really were born sharing one brain cell. Same weird temper, same stupidity, and same way of thinking that Severine has a lover.

And even if she did, what is it to them?

While grumbling inwardly, she conveniently forgot that she also made the same guess just an hour ago.

"You changed your style." Emmett remained leaning against the wall.

Unlike Damien, a science student, Emmett was Severine’s senior in the commerce field. Like her, he too was dressed in formal clothes.

For some absurd reason, he was wearing a yellow shirt, tucked into his suit pants.

With his two buttons left open, he looked like a lazy idol.

Yellow...

Severine suddenly regretted wearing this color.

Damien’s earlier remark was clearly aimed at their matching outfit.

"I like it."

"I suddenly don’t." Severine mercilessly rejected any form of strings linking to Emmett.

Standing near him had already earned her quite a large number of resentful and envious glares.

The only good thing was Alina. The heroine was present too, making Severine breathe a little easier.

Emmett let out a laugh, his eyes glinting in amusement. "Am I that bad in your eyes? So bad that... you forgot your promise?"

Forgetting the promise wasn’t a label a leader should have. A casual mention from Emmett, and many would turn against Severine.

If she managed to get the crown of Vale Enterprise, there would be projects unable to follow through. A silent boycott.

That’s how terrifying Emmett’s strength was in the business world, and also the reason why his older brother ended up in utter defeat.

But... what did it have to do with someone on the deathbed? Weren’t all her promises going to be a lie anyway?

"I told you I have an important business deal to follow. You didn’t listen."

Something finally flashed in those dark green eyes. A ripple sent waves, shrinking and expanding inside his pupils.

They shifted—slowly thinning into slits no human should possess.

Alina narrowed her eyes when the coercion mixed in the air. It wasn’t like the heavy oppression of a mountain that Damien released.

This was milder, almost soft in its wake. But far more invasive.

Alina hastily yanked Severine a few steps back before shielding her with her own body.

Her yellow eyes contracted into small slits. Her ears turned pointy like feline creatures. They twitched, gathering any sound that could turn into a danger.

With her new vision, she saw green wisps slithered through the air, bypassing her and coiling toward Severine.

Regardless, they failed to touch even a tiny hair.

Am I getting stronger? Alina mused with delight, thinking that her own coercion had managed to keep those green slithering whisps away.

"What do you want?" She raised her chin and asked.

She wanted to see this perverted bastard lose his cool. And what was better than to act like arrogant Damien?

Anytime she encountered that mad dog, her urge to smack him upside the head had risen to new heights.

"We had an agreement, Severine." Emmett clicked his tongue. Ignoring the charity case, Alina, he shook his head as if lamenting the missed deal.

"I’ll make up for it."

Severine patted Alina’s shoulder, feeling how taut her muscles were under her seemingly calm facade.

Tsk. Alina moved a step aside, letting Severine face Emmett.

Her provocation didn’t work at all. What am I lacking? Damien’s stupid brain? Nah, I am better without it.

"Oh? How? I don’t give second chances if the deal isn’t worthy of my time."

"I’ll bring you breakfast too. For a month."

The air stilled.

That strange tingle at the back of his mind was still there, something he had grown accustomed to as his alert radar.

Actually, Emmett was passing by for his own class. When he saw Damien, he couldn’t help but tease the wolf cub.

Sure enough, he didn’t even need to do anything special, and the cub was fuming, his hair standing in rage.

Amusing, really.

Even when he met Severine, he had no intention of scaring her. At least not yet.

Pawns should be obedient on their own. That saved a lot of trouble.

And Severine Vale was an important one to boot.

Honestly, Emmett was baffled, too. The moment Severine stopped in front of him, his senses were triggered, warning him, or perhaps giving him some sort of message he couldn’t yet grasp.

His change in form was his subconscious reaction.

Nonetheless, he was glad he allowed the shift.

If not, he would never have noticed the barrier wrapped around her.

Who made it?

To cast such a strong barrier from such a distance was nothing short of legendary.

Severine clearly wasn’t capable of doing it. Not because she wasn’t an Awakener, but her body was too weak.

With his sight, he saw how frail her health actually was.

Do they not feed her?

A sickly gloom threaded through her body, devouring what little vitality remained. Something was wrong with her chest, too.

A strange glow pulsed inside her chest like a second heart, continuously supplying that gloominess to every corner of her body.

Is she terminally ill?

As for why he thought about a long-distance creation of a protective barrier, he couldn’t sense any other Awakener in the vicinity who could stand against him.

Severine Vale is dying, and she has a powerful Awakener protecting her.

Where was this bodyguard when Damien was messing with her?

Or was it that she only recently bought the bodyguard?

"Sure," he agreed easily. With a blink, his eyes turned back to the deep pools of green, pretty enough to hypnotize others.

Severine Vale had become even more intriguing. So why would he let this opportunity go?

And if he got to meet that hidden Awakener, it would be good to pouch some talent to his side.

Brains and brawns... little Severine is carrying both, huh? How adorable.

"At seven. I might change my mind at 7:01."

"Do you come with scheduled mood swings, or is that spontaneous?" Alina mumbled. "Is it a version update? Should we wait for the final patch?"

Only when speaking it aloud did Alina notice the problem.

She never meant to say anything aloud!

Achieving his goal and getting important information, Emmett was in a rather good mood.

Ding Dong. Ding Dong.

The sound of a bell indicated the beginning of the class.

Emmett gave Alina an amused look before leaving for his classroom.

"He’s a Serpent Awakener. A rare kind. They can subtly charm others into revealing their true intentions." Severine explained to the stunned heroine. "Why do you think he is so good at dealing with others?"

"Ah, so that’s why." Alina nodded in understanding. "No wonder I almost gave him a hospital referral."

Noticing Severine’s confused look, Alina added with a sheepish smile. "A kidney hospital. Sooner or later, he is going to have issue in that area."

Severine: "..."
