Chapter 556: Chapter 554: I’ll Listen to You [1st update]

Maya Spencer saw that Liam Spencer was serious, so she stopped fooling around, nodded, and said, "Okay!"

Liam Spencer saw Maya’s compromise, took a deep breath, looked at James Bennett, and said, "Chairman Bennett, let’s talk."

"Let’s talk in my study." James Bennett said, standing up from the chair and turned to walk to the second floor.

Then he turned back to look at Sophia Bennett and ordered, "Sophia, either go home or stay in your room. If you cause trouble again, don’t blame your uncle for getting angry."

Sophia Bennett heard James Bennett’s warning, rolled her eyes at Maya Spencer, and cursed angrily, "You fox!"

Maya heard her curse, rolled her eyes indifferently, and ignored her. After all, she was already used to being called a fox.

Liam Spencer saw this and whispered softly in Maya’s ear, "Maya, I’ll come down later."

"Hmm!" Maya nodded obediently, no longer fooling around with Liam.

Maya was smarter than Sophia in this regard, even though she liked to fool around with Liam Spencer. However, she knew when she could play and when she couldn’t; when Liam was handling serious matters, Maya was always obedient.

Actually, even if Maya was not obedient and insisted on causing a fuss, Liam Spencer would still indulge her.

However, Maya was never that unreasonable.

The two girls watched as Liam Spencer and James Bennett left, rolling their eyes at each other but not continuing to fight.

A moment later, in James Bennett’s study, when James approached the floor-to-ceiling window, he couldn’t help but sigh deeply to express his helplessness.

Liam Spencer noted the man’s helplessness and directly asked, "Chairman Bennett, when did you find out?"

Even though Liam Spencer didn’t clearly state his question, James Bennett understood.

Both he and Liam were intelligent people; there was no need to beat around the bush in their conversation.

So, he honestly said, "That day at the club entrance, when I saw Maya, I noticed she bore a slight resemblance to me."

"When you introduced her as your fiancée, I basically confirmed that Maya is my daughter. That day, when I helped Maya take off her down jacket, I took her hair secretly, and the DNA test result showed that Maya is my daughter. That’s why I invited you all to dinner at my home."

James Bennett never expected that the girl Madelyn Hanson gave birth to would actually be his child.

All these years, he knew Madelyn had a daughter, who was Edward Spencer’s, and Edward raised the child.

Moreover, he and Madelyn had only that one accidental encounter, so he never thought it would be so coincidental that the child turned out to be his.

After finding out about this, James couldn’t sleep well for several nights. He wanted to acknowledge this daughter and keep her by his side.

But seeing her repulsion towards him, he felt awkward and didn’t know how to bring up this matter to Maya.

So, he constantly treated Maya well, unable to control his feelings, not expecting it to lead to her misunderstanding.

He loved Madelyn so much, yet ironically, she never reciprocated his love. He felt that it was his ancestral blessing that Madelyn gave birth to his child.

James Bennett’s heart was so overwhelmed with excitement that he almost went crazy, wishing to give her everything he had, yet he still had to restrain his fondness for Maya.

Fortunately, with Liam Spencer by his side, he helped mediate; otherwise, the situation would have been even more embarrassing.

However, he was puzzled as to why, since Liam had known about this matter for a while, he never approached him or pushed him to take responsibility for Maya. Nor did he tell Maya the truth. Moreover, at the dinner table just now, when faced with Maya’s inquiries, he almost blurted out the truth, but was forcibly stopped by Liam.

Hearing the man’s explanation, Liam calmly said, "You have never been in Maya’s life, and I don’t want you to tell her the truth so soon."

"Although Maya showed some interest in the word ’father’ lately, it’s just temporary. Deep down, she resists knowing about the father’s existence because all these years, you never looked for her, never gave her any fatherly love, and when her mother passed away, you didn’t show up either."

"Maya suffers from depression, and I don’t want her to be suddenly shocked. So, let’s delay this matter and let her slowly accept it on her own. Don’t give her too sudden an impact, especially given her mother’s cause of death; her spirit can’t bear it."

"Maya is very clever; she’s been caught up lately, thinking you have improper intentions towards her. She’ll figure it out in a few days, so there’s no need to rush in revealing the truth to her now."

Liam, even when facing his own issues, wouldn’t speak so extensively. Yet, when it came to matters concerning Maya, he cared more than anything else.

Not long ago, the fact that he was born to his second uncle and aunt had been exposed, leaving him with feelings of disappointment, helplessness, resentment, and aversion towards those two people, which was hard to bear.

During those days, he almost didn’t speak, nor did he have the mood to be affectionate with Maya; no matter how she tried to cheer him up, he felt terrible.

Liam prided himself on having a resilience strong enough to withstand a level ten typhoon and earthquake.

However, Maya was different; she appeared like a small hedgehog on the outside, but internally she was more fragile than anyone else. Even a minor unintentional harm could lead her to depression and suicidal thoughts.

He feared Maya couldn’t handle the sudden appearance of a father, nor accept her mother’s cause of death, which is why he prevented James Bennett from revealing the truth. Perhaps it seemed cruel to James Bennett, but he had no choice as he cared about no one more than Maya and didn’t want her to get hurt.

Recently, Maya’s condition has finally improved, and she has become happy after much effort. Liam didn’t want this happy Maya to be taken away.

Because he didn’t know if the love he gave her was enough to make up for the lost kinship?

Listening to Liam’s suggestion and hearing that Maya had depression, James Bennett was stunned and hesitated to speak up several times but remained silent.

In matters involving Maya, no one had more say than Liam Spencer because he provided Maya with the best love, transforming her from a small hedgehog into the lively and cheerful Maya.

James Bennett took a deep breath and calmly said, "Okay! I’ll listen to you and won’t tell Maya the truth for now."

James Bennett didn’t explain his feelings for Madelyn Hanson nor did he mention that he was there when Madelyn passed away. He was just standing alone in the corner.

Moreover, he didn’t explain that since Madelyn’s death, he had visited her every week, talked with her, and even though she was later buried in the Hanson Family’s cemetery, he continued to persevere in visiting her.

He didn’t explain that he had waited for Madelyn Hanson all his life and still couldn’t wait for her.
