No Trespassing! My Aloof Brother-Chapter 597 - 595 I Can Investigate [2nd Update]
Everyone was talking, and the group headed downstairs to continue celebrating Christmas today.
Sophia Bennett was full of energy once again, but Maya Spencer felt unsettled and unhappy because of an unintentional remark she made.
It wasn’t until after dinner that Liam Spencer drove Maya home.
In the car, Maya sat expressionlessly in the passenger seat, still holding the calligraphy brush James Bennett had personally made for her.
Maya took a deep breath, suddenly curled her lips into a cold smile, and then tossed the jade box onto the storage compartment beside her, saying with indifference, "Made personally again, James Bennett really is attentive to me. It makes me wonder if he owes me something and is trying to make up for it now."
James’s kindness left Maya without any other explanation.
Liam glanced at her, immediately stretched out his right hand, took her small hand, kissed the back of it, and asked, "Maya, do you want to find out the truth?"
Liam didn’t want Maya to live with such confusion; he believed it was better to face reality frankly than to remain entangled.
Hearing Liam’s question, Maya frowned deeply and stared at him for a moment.
At this moment, Maya suspected that Liam must know the truth but just hadn’t told her.
The truth? Did she want to find out the truth?
No, she didn’t want that man who had disappeared for nearly 23 years to affect her life.
She was living well and happily now, so why should she know the truth? Why acknowledge his existence? Why let him suddenly have such a big daughter for no reason? He never fulfilled a day of fatherly duty, and she would never accept his identity.
Moreover, she didn’t want her emotions to be swayed by that irresponsible man, didn’t want to feel embarrassed because of him.
She enjoyed the happy version of herself now and didn’t want to turn back into a prickly hedgehog, as that would make life difficult. She couldn’t let go or forgive her father who never showed up.
So, she calmly said, "Not for now." Instead of saying she didn’t want to, it might be more accurate to say she didn’t dare to.
"Maya, whenever you want to know the truth, just tell me and I’ll definitely help you find it," Liam pledged confidently.
"Have you already found out?" Maya looked at Liam’s side profile, trying to find the answer on his face.
However, Liam remained calm and said nonchalantly, "No, but I can investigate."
"I’m really tired today, I don’t want to talk about this anymore." Maya glanced at the calligraphy brush she had tossed aside, feeling mixed emotions.
Though she didn’t dislike James Bennett, she was very annoyed by his kindness to her. She regretted knowing him, as he stirred her heart, made her think about many things, and took away her previous happiness.
Seeing Maya say she was tired, Liam raised his right hand, placed it on her shoulder, and let her lean on his shoulder for a little rest.
That night, Maya suffered from insomnia again, her mind filled with thoughts about James Bennett.
She wondered, if James Bennett was indeed her father, how should she face him? How should she confront him?
She tossed and turned all night, her heart filled with deep-seated anger.
The next day, she didn’t go to the company with Liam but drove herself to a very remote area in S City, where she once lived with her mother.
After a whole night of contemplation, Maya drove for three hours to return to the place where she and her mother had once lived.
When she pushed open the apartment door, she found all the furniture covered with white cloth.
Since her mother committed suicide in this house, she hadn’t returned for almost five years.
Walking through the door again, memories from the past flashed vividly before her; it felt like her shared moments with her mother happened just yesterday.
As she approached the study, it seemed as if her mother was still there, leaning by the window, waiting hopelessly, just like she did every day, without speaking to anyone. Even when she spoke to Maya, her smile was weary.
She still remembered that one day after school, she entered the house and found it utterly silent. She called out for her mom several times, but no one answered.
So she walked into the master bedroom, where she found her mother had killed herself with a handgun.
Her mother died dressed beautifully, with a white dress that seemed to freeze her age at 20.
When Maya stepped into the bedroom again, her mother’s corpse seemed to appear before her.
Instantly, Maya’s eyes reddened, and she wildly tore away all the white cloth covering the furniture.
The books her mother had read were still there, as were the things used in the house.
Holding back tears, Maya stood before the desk, frantically flipping through the books on the shelves, hoping to find some clues.
The appearance of James Bennett, the word ’father,’ made Maya think a lot, rekindling the long dormant hatred she had. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
She guessed, was her mother’s death somehow related to that man? Maya desperately wanted to know the answer.
After searching through the bookshelves for a while, Maya didn’t find any useful evidence.
Just as she sat weakly on a chair, pondering whether she had made this trip for nothing, she suddenly noticed a notebook wedged under the desk leg.
She abruptly remembered that when she was little, she found the desk shaky when she did her homework on it, so she randomly took an old notebook from her mom’s bookshelf to steady the desk leg.
Back then, she was young and just thought it was her mother’s diary, but figured since it was finished, it was okay to use it to steady the desk.
Staring at the notebook, Maya took a deep breath, slowly stood up from the chair, crouched down carefully, lifted the desk with her body, and then pulled out the diary.
Then, she sat at the desk and began to read her mother’s diary.
This diary was very old, written before she was born.
As she read through the diary, Maya learned that when her mother met Edward Spencer, he was already married, and she realized her mother had been living in great pain.
What shocked her was discovering mentions of James Bennett in the diary.
"James urged me to leave Edward, saying that being with him wouldn’t result in anything. I know that too, but I just can’t let go. The opposition from dad and the lack of support from the Spencer Family were driving me to the brink."
Maya flipped through many more pages and continued to find mentions of James Bennett; she saw her mother’s handwriting becoming agitated. She wrote, "What do I do? What do I do? I was feeling down yesterday and drank with James. I drank too much, and by accident had an affair with him. How could I be so foolish? How could I make such a mistake? If Edward finds out, would he blame me? Would he leave me?"
"Today, I met James again, and we had a huge argument. He wanted me to go with him, but I don’t like him, not one bit. I’m hoping to marry Edward, and I think James and I will never meet again."
When Maya reached this passage, she was utterly stunned. It turned out her mother really was the girl James Bennett had secretly loved.
