Chapter 137: Where is your tail

Jian Wei wanted to grill Xiaobao for answers, but with Yu Xi standing nearby, it felt like she had a shield, a backer who would never let her be cornered. Xiaobao was throwing rocks and hiding her hand, her mischief disguised behind a sweet smile. She tilted her head, voice dripping with innocence. "Gege, senior is being mean to me."

Jian Wei froze. "..." That look on her face—anyone would think she was an angel.

Yu Xi glanced between them, his tone calm. "Then ignore him."

"Yes, please ignore me," Jian Wei muttered, already turning to walk away.

But Xiaobao wasn’t finished. "Check for the typo!" she shouted after him.

Jian Wei mumbled under his breath, frustration bubbling. "That’s sixty pages of work... what freaking typo?" He didn’t believe her, but his OCD wouldn’t let him ignore it. Even the smallest error gnawed at him, and he knew he’d go through every page to be sure.

Yu Xi sighed. "Will you stop messing with him?"

"Why?" Xiaobao asked, grinning. "It’s fun watching him squirm."

Yu Xi tugged her ear gently. "Ow, ow, ow! Okay, okay, I will stop!" she yelped.

Yu Xi released her and said, "I will put the flowers away, then we can go."

Xiaobao rubbed her ear, pouting. "Where’s your tail? Where did he go?"

Yu Xi frowned slightly. "He probably had something to do."

And indeed, Jian Ci had something to do. He was busy threatening a certain someone.

It didn’t take him long to track down the Esper who had dared provoke Yu Xi. Within five minutes, he had the name: Calix, son of Lord Ryker, a low-ranking official in the celestial high court. Jian Ci didn’t waste time with warnings or subtle threats. He went straight for the jugular.

With ruthless efficiency, Jian Ci dug into Calix’s records, pulling out every scrap of dirt he could find. It didn’t take much, Calix’s gambling habits were already whispered about in certain circles. Jian Ci compiled the evidence, then fed it to several major gossip accounts on Star Net. Within minutes, the story spread like wildfire, Calix’s reputation unraveling in front of the entire network.

Jian Ci sent him a single message: Next time, watch who you provoke.

Less than an hour later, Calix was being reprimanded by his furious parents. He couldn’t fathom who had orchestrated the attack, but the sudden message from an unknown contact made his heart sink. That one interaction had sparked a raging fire, threatening not only his own standing but also his father’s fragile position in the court.

Meanwhile, Jian Rui was at Stannis’ place, lounging on the couch with a content look while Stannis busied himself in the kitchen. The calm was broken when Jian Rui’s communicator buzzed. The caller ID flashed: Lord Ryker. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Jian Rui’s smile faded as he answered.

Lord Ryker was an ally Jian Rui had only recently planted in the celestial high court. Their arrangement was delicate, meant to remain hidden, and they were never supposed to communicate directly. So when Ryker’s name flashed across Jian Rui’s communicator, it could only mean something terrible had happened.

Ryker’s voice was tense as he explained the situation. Jian Rui listened carefully, his surprise growing. This couldn’t have been orchestrated by his father or any rival faction. Ryker was too minor an official, with barely any influence, and no one knew of their connection. Which meant someone else had deliberately targeted him.

"I will take care of it," Jian Rui said firmly before hanging up. He immediately made another call, setting his network into motion to investigate and suppress the rumors before they spread further.

Just then, a shirtless Stannis walked in from the kitchen, wearing a black apron and mittens, carrying a roast that looked mouthwatering. Jian Rui’s heart twisted with regret. He probably wouldn’t be able to enjoy either meal now.

Stannis caught the look on his face and knew instantly that his carefully planned day was about to be ruined. His jaw tightened, and he silently vowed to find out who had disrupted their peace—and give them an even worse beating than Jian Rui could imagine.

Meanwhile, Jian Ci remained blissfully unaware that he had just offended his future brother-in-law.

***

At night, Yu Xi lay in bed beside Jian Ci. He had returned late after giving offerings at his mother’s memorial.

As soon as he got home, he had showered quickly, then slipped into bed. Not long after, the door had creaked open and Jian Ci had tiptoed in, as he always did, moving with the stealth of someone who had long mastered sneaking into Yu Xi’s room. Yu Xi shifted, making room for him without a word. The two of them fell asleep, their breaths syncing in the dark.

Suddenly, the peace shattered with a roar. "Jian Ci!" Jian Rui’s voice thundered through the halls, sharp and furious. Both Yu Xi and Jian Ci jolted awake.

Yu Xi turned to Jian Ci, mouthing silently, What did you do?

"I have no idea," Jian Ci whispered back, though his guilty expression betrayed him.

Suddenly, Jian Ci scrambled off the bed and ducked underneath it. "Tell him I am not here," he hissed.

Yu Xi stared at him, speechless. "..."

Reluctantly, Yu Xi got up, keeping the lights off, and opened the door. Jian Rui stood there, eyes blazing. "Where is he?"

"He is not here," Yu Xi said evenly.

Jian Rui narrowed his eyes. He knew Yu Xi could lie, but he never thought he would be this convincing. Yu Xi looked calm, steady, as though speaking the truth. Yet Jian Rui’s instincts screamed otherwise.

He stepped forward, intent on searching the room, but Yu Xi blocked his path. His stance was firm, protective, ready to fight to the very end if necessary.

Jian Rui’s voice dropped, incredulous. "Are you really doing this?"

Yu Xi didn’t flinch. His silence was answer enough.

Jian Rui’s fury burned like wildfire. His younger brother’s reckless, rogue actions were intolerable, and every fiber of his being screamed to beat Jian Ci half to death for the chaos he had caused.
