Coming out of the mall’s back door, Chloe hailed a taxi and started to head for the Medical College.

At the same time...

In a business van parked by the roadside, Silas leaned lazily against the seat, with a cigarette dangling from his lips.

After the driver in the front seat took a call, he turned around cautiously. "Boss, uh... Miss Chester... we have lost her."

Silas’s expression remained calm. He had expected as much.

This wasn’t the first time he’d sent people to follow Chloe Sterling, but she gave them the slip every time.

After a moment of silence, Silas said, "Forget it. Let her do whatever she wanted."

The driver asked, "Should we keep looking for Miss Chester then?"

"No need." Silas stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray. "Let’s go."

After arriving at the Medical College, Chloe began with her research. By the time she finished, it was already dark. She glanced at the time and found it was past seven. So she packed up and started to leave the lab.

Although Julian Xavier ran a bar, he came from a long line of doctors. So he was still majoring in medicine and had yet to graduate from school.

He was driving off campus when he noticed a familiar figure on the side of the road. He immediately rolled down his window and called out, "Chloe."

At the sound of her name, Chloe stopped and turned toward the voice.

Julian said, "Get in. I’ll give you a ride."

Chloe didn’t hesitate, and walked over and getting into the car. "What brings you to campus today?" she asked curiously.

"What else but the old man," Julian said with a sigh. "He forced me to come here."

Chloe laughed. "Don’t tell me you got a beating?"

"Nothing like that," Julian said with a laugh. "By the way, where are you living now?"

"The Lockwood Residence."

Julian paused, and glanced at her in surprise. "You actually moved into The Lockwood Residence?"

Chloe nodded. "Yeah."

Julian had heard that Jasper kept a stable of top-tier talent at his estate, but he never thought Chloe would be one of them.

He genuinely saw Chloe as a little sister, so his expression turned serious. "Chloe, a top-tier family like the Lockwoods... are very hard to deal with. And Jasper Lockwood is a complicated man. You need to watch your back."

Chloe gazed at the glittering skyscrapers ahead. "Yeah, I know."

Julian didn’t drive onto the estate grounds, and stopped at the main gate instead.

Chloe got out of the car. "You should head back now. Drive safe."

"Alright, I’m off," Julian said.

The car made a U-turn and drove off. Chloe walked into the Lockwood Residence, and it took her a while to reach the main villa.

In the living room, Jasper was seated on the sofa in an imposing presence. His expression was cold and grim, and he was clearly in a foul mood. A few of his subordinates were standing before him, cautiously delivering their reports.

When he saw her enter, Jasper immediately said, "That’s all for today. You should leave."

Looking as if a great weight had been lifted from their shoulders, they all quickly departed. As they passed Chloe, they shot her grateful glances and respectfully addressed her, "Madam."

Chloe acknowledged them with a nod before walking over to sit beside Jasper. "What’s wrong?" she asked. "Did something happen?"

Facing the woman he loved, Jasper’s expression instantly softened. "It’s nothing. Just some business matters." He paused, then asked, "Why didn’t you have a driver pick you up again?"

Chloe didn’t like using the Lockwood drivers. It was causing a lot of inconvenience for her.

"Taking a cab is convenient," Chloe said with a smile.

A ghost of a smile played on Jasper’s lips, his sharp eyes fixed on her. "So, you took a cab home?"

"..."

Staring into his seemingly all-seeing eyes, Chloe answered truthfully, "No. Julian drove me home."

Initially, all Jasper knew was that Chloe hadn’t called for a driver. The butler had just come to inform him that she had returned and was walking in from the main gate.

He’d assumed she had taken a cab again, but then the butler mentioned seeing Julian car drop her off.

A man was always possessive of his woman. Even knowing they were just friends, he couldn’t help but feel a prickle of displeasure.

This was even more true for a man of Jasper’s stature. He wished he could hide Chloe away from the world, where no one else could see her.

But he couldn’t do that. His woman was a little wildcat. She couldn’t be caged.

If he pushed her, she might even scratch.

Seeing Jasper just staring at her without saying a word, Chloe instinctively asked, "What is it?"

’Is it because I didn’t use the Lockwood driver? Or is he unhappy... because another man brought me home?’

Chloe wondered.

After a moment of internal argument inside himself, Jasper talked himself down. Once he’d confirmed the other man wasn’t a rival for her affection, he finally spoke. "It’s nothing. Since you don’t want to use a driver, just use a car yourself. It’ll be more convenient as well."

Chloe nodded. "Okay."

Seeing that Jasper wasn’t upset, she breathed a faint sigh of relief, without realizing that she was starting to care about his feelings.

During dinner, Chloe recalled what Silas had said to her earlier. After a moment’s hesitation, she began, "Jasper..." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

"Hmm?" Jasper looked at her. "What is it?"

"What’s the story between you and the Nocturne Group? Why is there bad blood?"

"What makes you suddenly ask about that?"

"I heard some people at the Medical College mention the Nocturne Group today, and it just got me thinking. I’m only curious. If you’d rather not talk about it, that’s fine."

"It’s not a secret," Jasper said. "It happened back in Country E. We’d both set our sights on the same project. At first, it was fair competition, but then..."

"Then what happened?" Chloe asked.

"Then the president of the Nocturne Group, Silas Coldwell, started playing dirty, so I played a few tricks of my own." As he spoke, Jasper poured himself a glass of red wine.

"So what was the outcome? Who ended up with the project?"

Jasper’s lips curved into a smirk. "What do you think happened?"

’Thinking back to the look on Silas’s face when he mentioned Jasper, and how he’d claimed he was just "careless," it seemed pretty clear that Jasper had won.’

Chloe looked at his smiling, handsome face and said, "From the look on your face, I’d say you got it."

"That’s right. I did."

Chloe nodded. "I figured as much."

Silas had been trying to get her to join the Nocturne Group for a while now, and she’d always refused. If he found out she was with Jasper, he’d probably want to settle both old and new scores at once.

Silas might seem easygoing and cheerful, but he was terrifying when he lost his temper.

Still, she wasn’t the only top-level pharmacist in the world. Silas probably wouldn’t start a war with Jasper over her. After all, their organizations were evenly matched. He wouldn’t engage in a mutually destructive fight.

Seeing her apparent concern, Jasper added, "Chloe, the Nocturne Group is in Crestfall to find a Pharmacist, not to come after me. You don’t need to worry about that." ’Chloe might be capable, but she was still just a twenty-year-old girl. It was only natural for her to be a little scared or worried when faced with such powerful forces.’

Chloe just hummed in response, and picked up her glass of water for a sip.

Of course she knew they were here to look for a Pharmacist. She was that Pharmacist!
