On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 15: Goodnight
After dinner, Chloe Sterling went to the study upstairs and took a thick, ancient medical book from the bookshelf.
It was a unique ancient tome her master had left her before he departed—the only one of its kind in the world.
She walked over to the sofa, sat down, and began to read the ancient book intently.
A short while later, Jasper pushed the door open and came in. He saw her looking so serious and focused that she didn’t even notice his arrival.
’Looks like this book is more attractive than I am.’
Jasper walked to the bookshelf and picked out a book. Only then did Chloe notice he was there. "Oh, hi."
"So you finally noticed me." Jasper smiled and sat down beside her.
Chloe cleared her throat. "How do you walk without making a sound?"
"It’s because you were too focused." Jasper’s gaze fell on the book in her hands, his tone tinged with a hint of mocked resentment. "You only have eyes for your medical books."
"..."
Staring at the man’s devastatingly handsome face, Chloe swallowed, momentarily at a loss for words.
She had seen plenty of good-looking men, but none were as dangerously attractive as Jasper. She could barely handle it.
Chloe’s cool, slender fingers unconsciously tightened around the book. Noticing her action, Jasper’s lips curled into a slight smile. "Go on, keep reading. I won’t disturb you." He paused, then suddenly added, "I’m not going to steal it from you. No need to hold on so tight."
Only then did Chloe notice her own clenched fingers. His words made the tips of her ears turn red.
Despite this, her face remained calm. She said nothing and went back to her book.
But with him sitting right next to her, she found it impossible to concentrate.
Meanwhile, a certain someone appeared perfectly at ease, quietly reading his own book as if her presence didn’t affect him in the slightest.
Chloe finally couldn’t sit still any longer. She abruptly closed her book. "I’m tired. I’m going to bed."
Jasper turned to look at her, then glanced at the clock on the wall. "It is getting late. I’ll stop reading, too."
In truth, he hadn’t been able to focus on his book either. He closed it, then took the book from Chloe’s hands and put it to the bookshelf.
"Let’s go."
Chloe nodded.
The two of them left the study together.
In the space between their two bedrooms, Chloe stopped and said suddenly, "Good night."
Jasper lowered his gaze to her stunningly beautiful face, and his eyes were growing deeper. His large hand suddenly wrapped around her waist, and pulled her into his embrace as he leaned down and kissed her soft lips.
Chloe was startled at first and subconsciously raised her hands to push him away, but he held her domineeringly in his arms, with his voice low and husky. "Don’t move, please."
Chloe’s fingers clutched the front of his shirt as she slowly closed her eyes.
An unknown amount of time passed before the elevator doors not far away suddenly opened.
Sensing someone had come up, Chloe could no longer remain still. She shifted slightly, and Jasper took the opportunity to release her in a whisper, "Good night."
Without even looking at the person who had arrived, Chloe hurried toward her bedroom.
Henry stepped out of the elevator and froze for a moment at the scene in the living area. Once he processed what he’d seen, he immediately turned to get back in the elevator, hoping to make a quick escape.
Jasper’s cold, deep voice suddenly rang out, "Get back here!"
Henry felt like dying.
He stepped out of the elevator again and spoke cautiously, "Mr. Lockwood..."
Jasper shot him a look as sharp as a sword. "You’d better have something extremely urgent to report!"
Henry lowered his head. "Sir, I’m sorry."
He did not, in fact, have anything critically urgent.
"Your bonus for this year is docked!"
Henry Chamberlain was totally speechless.
Jasper strode toward the guest room.
Henry followed cautiously, not even daring to breathe too loudly.
"What is it?" Jasper Lockwood finally asked.
Henry replied carefully, "Mr. Lockwood, Miss Sinclair wishes to see you."
"Which Miss Sinclair?"
"The eldest daughter of the Sinclair Family, Phoebe Sinclair."
Hearing this, Jasper stopped abruptly, his expression turning icy. "Henry, have you had too much free time on your hands lately?"
A chill ran down Henry’s spine. "S-Sir..."
Jasper said coldly, "From now on, don’t bother me with such insignificant people and matters."
"Okay, I understand."
In the bathroom, Chloe stared at her reflection in the mirror, her gaze fixed on her slightly swollen, red lips. The searing heat from the kiss seemed to linger, and Jasper’s devastatingly handsome face replayed endlessly in her mind.
She suddenly felt angry—not at Jasper, but at herself for her lack of self-control.
A few days later...
At the Medical College.
Director Xavier walked into the research lab, looking deeply troubled.
Seeing his expression, Chloe immediately asked, "Director Xavier, what’s wrong?"
Director Xavier sighed. "I’m afraid Old Master Rivers isn’t going to make it."
"Old Master Rivers? Which Old Master Rivers?"
"The Rivers Family. Old Master Rivers. The prescription I gave him is no longer having any effect. There’s only one person who can save him now, but I don’t know if the Rivers Family can find her."
"What’s Old Master Rivers’s condition? And who is this person you’re talking about?"
Director Xavier briefly explained Old Master Rivers’s condition, then added, "The only person who can save him is Lynn Chester. She’s a top-level pharmacist and an incredibly skilled doctor, but she’s extremely mysterious. Finding her on such short notice is nearly impossible."
"Are... are you and Old Master Rivers friends?" Chloe asked.
"We have a bit of a history. When the Medical College was building the new laboratory, Old Master Rivers sponsored a great deal of our top-tier medical equipment. Without him, many of our current projects wouldn’t be possible."
"I see." After a moment of thought, Chloe said, "Director Xavier, let me try."
"You?" Director Xavier looked at her hesitantly. He had great faith in Chloe’s pharmaceutical abilities, but treating a patient was ultimately more complex than just researching medicine.
"I don’t just research medicinal herbs. I also studied traditional medicine when I was living in the countryside and have treated many people."
Director Xavier knew Chloe’s character. She was level-headed, not arrogant or presumptuous. If she said she wanted to try, it meant she must have some degree of confidence.
After a moment’s consideration, Director Xavier said, "Alright, go and give it a try. If it doesn’t work out, don’t blame yourself. Just do your best."
Chloe nodded. "Okay."
"Alright, I’ll call the Rivers now and have them pick you up. You should get over there as soon as possible." As he spoke, Director Xavier took out his phone to call the Rivers Family.
Half an hour later, a car from the Rivers Family pulled up in front of the laboratory building.
A young, handsome man got out of the car, his attitude respectful. "Director Xavier, hello. I’m Damian Rivers. Thank you for all your trouble regarding my grandfather’s case."
"Young Master Rivers, there’s no need to be so formal."
"Where is the doctor you mentioned?"
Director Xavier glanced at Chloe beside him and introduced her, "This is she. An important researcher in our lab, Chloe Sterling."
Only then did Damian Rivers notice the girl standing next to Director Xavier, his face filled with surprise. "It’s you!"
Chloe Sterling also hadn’t expected that the person coming to pick her up would be the Heir of the Rivers. "Hello, Young Master Rivers."
"You two know each other?"
