Chapter 102: Chapter 102 — Grace’s Plan

"Did you just call me Grandpa?" Miles asked, his hands trembling.

Maya’s eyes flickered with curiosity and confusion.

Serena, on the other hand, froze. She didn’t realize when the word slipped out from her.

She took a deep breath, and nodded. "Grandfather." She called out, her hands still firmly wrapped around Maya.

Miles laughed, nodding while wiping the tears which threatened to drop from his eyes.

"Good good," he continually said, then gestured to one of the maids and instructed, "prepare a room just as the Young Miss requested."

Serena’s eyes softened. "Grandpa, I’ll put her to bed. She has been through so much and she needs me by her side." She informed, and added, "we’ll be leaving now."

She didn’t wait for Miles to respond before she walked away with Maya while being led by the maid.

Cody was about to follow them when he was stopped by Miles whose smiling expression was replaced with an interrogative one.

"Who’s she? And what happened?" He demanded, then added after a few seconds, "don’t hide anything from me."

"Grandpa, let’s have a seat so we can explain." Alexander suggested.

Miles and Elias nodded, and the men returned to the living room.

"Alright. Start speaking." Elias ordered, as both older men assumed the military stance.

Cody bit his lips as he explained everything, right from Maya’s past to what happened today without leaving out a thing.

When he was done, the two old men had complicated expressions on their faces. But above all, anger settled in them.

As previous soldiers, they had a strong sense of righteousness, so listening to what Maya had faced brought an anger which was always hidden.

"What punishment are you giving that man? He has gone against the law and needs to be punished."

"He was taken away by Uncle Jones, his subordinates included." Alexander answered.

"Great. He has committed a major offence, so he needs to face the consequences."

"And what better place than the military. He’d be given the appropriate punishment for messing with a woman."

Both Elias and Miles spoke after one another, a strong righteousness filled their tone.

While the men conversed, Serena helped Maya into the bed.

Maya watched quietly as Serena gave instructions to the maid who nodded politely and walked out of the room.

"Is there something I’m missing?" She asked quietly, and Serena turned to her.

"What do you mean?" She probed, and took a seat on the bed beside Maya.

"Since when have you been addressed as Young Miss? And Cody’s grandfather? You addressed him as grandfather, and he seemed to be extremely happy that you did so." She asked all of these in a single breath. After exhaling, she continued, "is there something I’m missing?"

Serena took a deep breath. "Where do you want me to begin my explanation?"

Maya was silent as she pulled the blanket over her body, clutching it tightly. Her voice was barely above a whisper as she answered. "You can start anywhere. As long as it is an answer."

Serena was quiet for a while before she began. "It all came as a surprise to me. My whole life, my identity... they all changed in mere seconds."

Maya listened attentively, her eyes fixated on Serena.

"Turns out my mom is Regina Hale, the daughter of Miles Hale. She is also the woman that eloped and married a man against her father’s wish. And I bear a significant resemblance to my mom..."

A few minutes later, Serena was already done with her explanation. Maya’s expression had changed severally before it settled into a confused one.

"Are you okay?" Serena inquired, seeing that there was no response.

Maya snapped out of her thoughts as she shook her head. "So, what you’re trying to say is that you are the granddaughter of the Hales, Cody’s cousin?"

Serena nodded.

Maya laughed softly. "What an interesting twist of fate." She murmured under her breath. She took Serena’s hands into hers, and genuinely told her, "I’m glad you were able to find your family. They look like they’d take care of you properly."

Serena smiled softly. "Thank you, Maya. And I’m also happy for you. You were able to get rid of the biggest thorn in your life."

The two ladies hugged each other tightly, while celebrating each other’s happiness.

Bang!

There was a loud shatter sound resounding in the room.

Grace could be seen in the room, seated on a sofa as her chest rose and fell.

Her eyes were dark, while her fingers tightly clenched.

"How could it be possible? How could Serena be Miles’s Granddaughter? She’s that bitch’s daughter." She asked no one in particular, and let out an ear-shattering scream.

The maids who were working in the corridor all froze as they exchanged glances, the same thought running through their minds.

’Grace was having one of her normal fits.’

It seems it was a normal occurrence for Grace to have an episode.

"That’s not possible. I can’t let Serena and Alexander remain together. If they do, it’d ruin my plans." She murmured.

Her eyes flashed with malice. "I guess I have to take matters into my own hands. I have to take out both Alexander and Serena." Her lips curved into a smirk as she rose to her feet.

"They shouldn’t blame me. All of this is Thomas’s fault. If he had remained faithful in our marriage, I wouldn’t have been forced to do this."

"My son must be the only heir. All obstacles must be cleared."

She took a deep breath and returned to the sofa.

She picked up her phone and dialed a number, and the call was connected immediately.

"I want you to take care of two people. They are thorns on my side." She demanded, placing one leg over the other.

"You know the usual payment method." A greasy voice sounded from the other end of the line.

"You don’t have to worry. I completely understand." She replied with a sweet tone, but the expression on her face was blank.

There was silence for a while. When Grace was about to disconnect the call, that man’s quiet voice rang out from the other end.

"When can I meet our son? He deserves to know that I am his father as well." There was a pleading tone in the man’s voice.

Grace rubbed her forehead as a tired expression settled on her face. "Soon. I’m doing all of these for our son. Once you get rid of those two obstacles for me, I’ll introduce you to our son. That’s a promise."

Before waiting for his reply, she disconnected the call immediately and threw her phone to the other side of the sofa.

"I guess I have to take care of you as well. If I don’t, you might end up ruining my plans. That’s not possible."

-------------------

While Grace was planning to take out the two major obstacles in her path, those two stood in the balcony, staring at the starless sky.

"She finally fell asleep after having something to eat." Serena commented and took a deep breath.

"Thank you for today, Alexander." She turned to him, her eyes filled with immense gratitude..

Alexander’s brows shot up as he asked, "why are you thanking me?"

Serena chuckled as she returned her gaze to the sky. "For saving my best friend. You have no idea how much it means to me."

Alexander smiled softly and pulled her into his arms, his arms wrapping around her shoulder. "Technically, Maya is one of my friends now."

Serena burst out laughing, and the look in his eyes softened. "Did anyone ever tell you that you look beautiful when you laugh?"

Serena nodded, and Alexander’s brows furrowed.

"Who?"

"A man. Someone very handsome."

Alexander’s arms tightened around her shoulders, his expression hardening. "Do I know him?"

Serena observed his expression, and her smile widened. He was jealous. "Yes, you do."

Alexander’s chest rose and fell and it looked like he was about to explode.

"Of course, it’s you." Serena winked at him, sticking out her tongue teasingly.

"Are you teasing me?" He asked, his eyes narrowing. Serena nodded in reply.

Alexander’s eyes flashed with a hint of mischievousness. "Let’s see if you can still tease me if I tickle you."

Before Serena could understand what was going on, Alexander was already tickling her, causing her to burst into laughter.

"Alex, that’s enough." She said amidst laughter.

"Are you wrong?" Alexander asked, also laughing which was a rare sight.

"Yes, I was wrong. I won’t do it anymore."

While the couple were having fun, the two old men stood at the door as they watched them.

"I can’t remember when Alexander had so much fun." Elias commented, sniffing as he wore a nostalgic expression.

"All thanks to my granddaughter." Miles remarked, a proud smile on his face.

Elias laughed.

"What are both of you doing here?" Cody’s voice caused them to turn, and their eyes met his.

"It’s none of your business." They answered simultaneously.

"Ouch." He held his chest as though he was hurt so he could get sympathy, but the two old men were not moved as they had already seen through his act.

"I can’t even deceive you both." He complained, sighing.

Miles’s countenance brightened as he asked with a straightforward face. "What do you think about Maya? In fact, what’s your relationship with her? After all, you were the first one to rush out."

Cody froze as he stared at his grandfather speechlessly. He thought for a while, and was silent. He didn’t have the answer.

What did Maya mean to him? He was clueless. She meant something, but he couldn’t place his finger on what she was to him.
