Chapter 196: Chapter 196: Can’t Let Go

This distance brought him closer to Aaron Carson.

Only then did the latter see the other’s expression clearly.

The usually carefree face bore not the slightest hint of a smile; those charming eyes hung low, full of vexation and discomfort.

An expression like this on Ryan Ford was indeed rare.

Combining this with Mrs. Ford’s appearance when she just left, Aaron Carson felt his heart, already suspended in mid-air, become even more precarious.

Ryan Ford finished a cigarette outside the outpatient building but didn’t leave immediately.

Instead, he kept looking inside the building from time to time.

Though the temperature in Capitoline in June wasn’t as scorching as in July or August, staying outside for too long in the sticky heat was unbearable.

When Julian Ford and Scarlett Shaw came into view the very next second, Ryan Ford almost immediately walked over to them.

"Brother, your illness..."

"You just keep doing what you need to do. Don’t worry about me."

Julian Ford looked at him calmly, as if discussing the most ordinary of trivial matters.

Unwillingness seeped from Ryan Ford’s eyes as he glanced imploringly at Scarlett Shaw and said, "At least tell me the surgery time. Scarlett being alone might not handle it all, and I can help out as a labor."

Scarlett Shaw thought of what Ryan Ford had said for Julian Ford in the hospital meeting room just now.

She gently squeezed Julian Ford’s palm, "I might not be able to handle it alone. It’ll be more convenient to have Ryan’s help when the time comes."

Julian Ford glanced at Scarlett Shaw and nodded, "Surgery by the end of the month."

His elder brother rarely compromised, making Ryan Ford smile slightly, then realizing the impending surgery, his smile quickly faded.

His expression was more distressing than crying.

Accustomed to his shameless demeanor usually, shedding tears seemed difficult. Realizing his own excessive display, Ryan Ford quickly collected himself and bid goodbye to Scarlett Shaw and Julian Ford:

"I’ll go now and wait for your call!"

As he turned to leave, Scarlett Shaw called out, "Ryan."

He turned back.

Scarlett Shaw looked earnestly into his eyes, "Thank you for today."

Ryan Ford felt a tug at his left chest, his eyes flickered, and he replied with a smile, "Why thank me? It’s my brother’s issue. Isn’t it natural for me to help?"

Without waiting for Scarlett Shaw to respond, he briskly walked to his own Cayenne and got into the car directly.

Holding the steering wheel, he couldn’t help but tremble slightly.

Josiah Sutton was there discussing Julian Ford’s illness with Ezra Ford in detail, and he silently listened from the side.

It was only then he knew, that last summer, his brother was diagnosed...

Josiah Sutton mentioned, nowadays, many illnesses are significantly related to emotional repression. Without an outlet, it accumulates into disease; otherwise, why in recent years, so many people suffer from depression and commit suicide.

Julian Ford’s rationality stopped him from becoming excessively introspective and depressed, but everything that Ezra Ford and Freya Pierce brought were indeed retributions, reflected back on their son.

During an avalanche, no snowflake feels responsible.

Ryan Ford couldn’t help but wonder if at that time, his brother hadn’t helped him, would the harm Freya Pierce caused his brother be less?

Would his brother not have fallen ill?

The more he thought about it, the more irritated he became.

One cigarette was followed by another.

Julian Ford’s illness wasn’t something that could be entirely treated in a short time; plus, the worst outcome couldn’t be ruled out.

That was what bothered Ryan Ford the most.

Josiah Sutton also told Ezra Ford that since meeting Scarlett Shaw, Julian Ford began to actively cooperate with treatment. If Ezra Ford truly wished for his son to recover, he shouldn’t engage in unnecessary actions anymore. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Ryan Ford didn’t know if Ezra Ford took that to heart.

But he felt panicked and frightened.

Scarlett Shaw was now Julian Ford’s pillar of support, but if the troubling matters he did came to her knowledge, would she still be devotedly by Julian Ford’s side?

It’s impossible for anyone to be entirely selfless.

Handling cases, Ryan Ford had seen much of human nature’s dark side, let alone Scarlett Shaw was the innocent victim.

Why should she bear such burdens when she did nothing wrong?

...

The Cayenne maneuvered further into the distance, Scarlett Shaw’s gaze lingered on the car for a moment before a mildly cool voice drifted into her ears:

"Still looking at him?"

Her boyfriend’s crisp voice filled with discontent.

Scarlett Shaw withdrew her gaze, heaving a long sigh. Though her eyes were no longer as teary as before, drenched as if soaking in water, they still brimmed with endless discomfort.

"If Ryan Ford hadn’t stepped out to say those words earlier, clueless as I was, I would’ve foolishly stood by, fretting with worry."

Ezra Ford’s aggressive demeanor, Freya Pierce’s strident outcry, resembled towering walls, stifling and suffocating.

As a mere bystander, experiencing it for just those few minutes left her feeling suffocated and wanting to flee.

But Julian Ford lived in such an environment for thirty years.

"You’ve never needed to do anything."

Julian Ford stated calmly.

"Deciding to walk together with you, is about wanting to give you happiness, ensuring you’re better off, not bringing you more storms. If you feel they’ve gone too far, making you uncomfortable, then whether you choose to retaliate with words or remain silent and do nothing, it’s all fine. I only have one requirement—"

He lowered his gaze, gently pinching her slightly warm earlobe, "No matter what, you’re not allowed to run."

Scarlett Shaw was taken aback, her heart sour and astringent, yet she couldn’t help but frown with displeasure, "Why do you keep mentioning that I might run lately, what’s happened to trust between people?"

Instead of answering, Julian Ford retorted, "What do you think?"

Scarlett Shaw fell silent for a few seconds.

Suddenly, she tightly embraced the man before her, her cheek rubbing against his neckline, cautiously yet slightly smug, she whispered in his ear:

"Are you now unable to leave me?"

Julian Ford cast his eyes downward, the view filled with the sight of Scarlett Shaw’s reddened eartips.

In this world, no one is truly indispensable to another; whether love is ardent and fervent, slow and steady, or respectful, when it’s time to part, they will part.

Walking alone is painful, yet feasible.

This belief was deeply ingrained in Julian Ford.

But the person in his arms was so warm and wonderful, offering him the best semblance of love, and most importantly—

she let him sense a vibrant vitality.

Though perhaps insufficient to shake anything of weight, it unmistakably moved his entire heart.

So, he was willing to give her a definite answer.

"Yes."

The clear voice dropped softly beside her ear.

The hand encircling her waist tightened.

Scarlett Shaw heard Julian Ford gently, profoundly tell her: "I can’t leave you."

Aaron Carson stood from a distance, seeing his boss and the lady boss embracing, politely averted his gaze.
