Pokémon Court-Chapter 837: Wasted Potion
Yes, the Rotom Pokédex has been upgraded.
After the data chip was loaded, its computing capabilities became far more powerful. While it still couldn’t compare to supercomputers, its processing speed absolutely crushed that of ordinary office computers.
One day later.
The Rotom Pokédex finished its upgrade. Awakening from nothingness, it opened its eyes and blinked. This upgrade had been the longest data update it had ever experienced, far more complex than any in the past. However, the Rotom Pokédex could also feel that its mind was clearer—a clarity that could perceive everything.
“Ah, this feels so good, Roto.”
The Rotom Pokédex stretched its body, flew around twice, and smiled at Terrance. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
As soon as it finished speaking, it noticed Kirlia standing beside Terrance. It immediately loaded a new program and projected an optical screen out of thin air in front of Terrance.
“Pretty cool,” Terrance said with satisfaction as he looked at the holographic projection. “Now we don’t have to communicate face to face anymore.”
Previously, whenever Terrance wanted to look something up through the Rotom Pokédex, he had to let it come close and carefully read the display on its body. Now, with the projection function, it would be much more convenient for it to convey information to him.
Terrance examined what it was projecting. It looked like a progress bar.
Below the image were a few words.
Psychic power development level: 88%.
“What is this?” Terrance hesitated for a moment, then murmured in realization. “Right, it must be what Master Victor mentioned—the absorption level of the Genetic Potion.”
“So that means Kirlia has already absorbed 88% of the potion’s effects?!”
The thought startled Terrance. With Master Victor’s assistance, he had successfully let several Pokémon use the Genetic Potion one after another. Fortunately, just as Master Victor had said, these potions truly had no side effects at all.
But now, the effectiveness of the potion was something Terrance couldn’t help but criticize.
After absorbing the potion, Kirlia was the only one to show a status condition. Its psychic power seemed to have been overstimulated, causing headaches. At the time, Terrance had hurriedly massaged its head and afterward didn’t dare let Kirlia stray too far from him, keeping a close eye on it and ready to massage it again whenever the headache returned.
After that headache, Kirlia’s psychic power level had increased by less than 1%—a negligible improvement. It was hard to say whether it was due to the potion or its own meditation.
Now, discovering that Kirlia had absorbed 88% of the potion’s effects yet hadn’t even gained a 1% increase in psychic power, how could Terrance not be astonished?
“Kir~lia?” Kirlia looked up at Terrance with a calm expression, though to Terrance it seemed almost innocent.
Reaching out to pat its head, Terrance shook his head and said, “I have a hypothesis. Master Victor’s Genetic Potion was probably designed to develop Pokémon potential from multiple aspects. But perhaps this particular aspect of potential had already been fully developed, so these effects weren’t absorbed at all and were completely wasted, serving as useless components…”
To confirm this hypothesis, all he needed to do was check the absorption percentages of the other Pokémon’s Genetic Potions.
Rubbing Kirlia’s head again, Terrance gestured for it not to worry. “Your potential was developed jointly by Mewtwo and Mew. There may still be hidden abilities that haven’t been uncovered, but it’s understandable that this bottle of Genetic Potion would be ineffective on you. Let’s just try our best to absorb the remaining 12% of the effects.”
“Kir~lia!” Kirlia nodded, indicating it understood.
“Alright, next we’ll go to the rear garden to see Altaria and the others,” Terrance said to the Rotom Pokédex and Kirlia.
…
…
The rear garden of Fallarbor Gym.
Terrance arrived at the area where his Pokémon lived and called them over.
Altaria… Beautifly… Gallade… Mismagius… Castform… Arcanine… Carbink… Pupitar… Ninetales…
“Rotom Pokédex, scan Altaria’s absorption results,” Terrance said.
“Understood, Roto!!” As the Rotom Pokédex nodded, it released a flash of light to scan Altaria. Immediately, an optical projection appeared in front of Terrance and Altaria.
Altaria was very intelligent. When it saw the drastically different percentages, its eyes and looked at Terrance.
Play Rough development level: 100%.
Fairy-type energy affinity development level: 100%.
Vocal talent development level: 29%.
“In just one day, Altaria hasn’t shown the slightest change. That means this potion only has any effect on developing its vocal talent?” Thinking of this possibility, Terrance felt a pang of heartache, his lips twitching a few times.
Altaria’s Fairy-type talent was simply too strong, to the point that 76% of the effects of the Genetic Potion—meticulously formulated by Master Victor at great expense—had gone to waste.
“Alt~aria…” Altaria let out an innocent cry. Even the surrounding Pokémon could understand the innocence in that voice. In response, Terrance slapped his forehead. “This is a good thing. It shows that even without the Genetic Potion… you would… forget it, it still hurts to think about.”
“Alt~aria!!” Altaria cried again. Terrance froze. It was saying it would have been better to give it to its mother instead—that Altaria on Mt. Chimney. Hearing that it could be used that way, Terrance was filled with regret. Indeed, perhaps with this Genetic Potion, another Pokémon close to Elite Four–level strength could have been raised. Unfortunately, it was already too late to say any of that.
“It’s not a loss, not a loss. If we fully develop your vocal talent, your Erase Technique will reach a whole new level. Then we can also copy Lisia’s technique of playing music with Cotton Guard, and that’ll boost our overall foundation as well,” Terrance said with a smile.
For now, that was the only way he could think about it.
It could be said that Master Victor’s Genetic Potion failed to reach even a passing level of effectiveness on Kirlia and Altaria. However, Terrance wasn’t discouraged. Master Victor simply didn’t understand Kirlia and Altaria, but it was impossible for all of his Pokémon to coincidentally be like them.
After Rotom Pokédex finished scanning Altaria’s absorption level, the remaining Pokémon immediately crowded over, eager to see their own results.
The winner… was Arcanine…
This gigantic beast, standing over three meters tall, shoved all the Pokémon aside at once, knocked Terrance to the ground, then rubbed him with a paw larger than Terrance’s face and licked him with a tongue even bigger than that in a show of affection. Seeing this, the Rotom Pokédex covered its face and hurriedly projected Arcanine’s information, not daring to delay as it tried to rescue Terrance.
“Get off me.” With a kick, Terrance shoved Arcanine away, feeling helpless. Though he called it a kick, to Arcanine it was no different from a massage—one without much force at that. It wasn’t that Terrance was holding back; he was really using his strength. With Terrance’s physique, beating several grown adults would be no problem at all, but against the thick-skinned, tough-bodied Arcanine, he was completely helpless.
