Quills: the Rise of the Northern Matriarch-Chapter 104: Downfall (1)
Chapter 104 - Downfall (1)
The analysis found that the Hudai had installed tracking software and screen capturing software on Nora's Interface. When it stopped working after the Quill software had quarantined and reset the software on Nora's interface, the connection was lost; they could not detect anyone monitoring it after it was set up on the false interface. It was unfortunate that it could not be used against the Hudai to manipulate them. Liem sent off a complaint and received compensation from them, however, for the change to Nora's interface and the tampering of the transport software.
It took twelve days for the government to release a message to the Matriarchs about the missing controls; other core tools started to fail in the interface, which started a panic. The damage was permanent and done to the registry of the operating system of Hudai Tech. There was no way to reset back to an earlier version as it was saved in a weekly backup that overwrote the previous version. None of the Hudai had the skill to fix the problems. They could not detect who in the clan uploaded the defective code. The internal investigations led to the discovery that it came from the main family.
As the tools failed before their eyes, Talan felt a poetic sense of justice, since the administrative tools were the first to start to fail. He knew that Edem himself uploaded the code when updating the Matriarch administrative tools. He expected one of his brothers to be the first to upload their work. He would never have dreamed that his own father unwittingly dealt the death blow to Hudai Tech by waiting until after the big party to submit his work on the most 'crucial' tools. Lara must of been very enraged that night, forcing him to use the excuse of working.
'Was Lara looking to make an update to Nora's own tools after being humiliated by her at the party? Or had the old man forgotten due to the excitement of planning that party?' Talan thought to himself.
The offices of Hudai Technologies were emptying out quickly. None of the Gimmel level programmers that were actually capable of fixing the problem wanted to fix the problem. Outsiders could not be compelled to assist, knowing they would be enabling themselves to be oppressed. When one of the Alphem or Bitas leveled Hudai clan members tried to intimidate them into working on the issue by force, they simply left, taking their family out uncertainly unemployed. They could not kill them or hurt them anymore unless it was physical. Talan received hundreds of communication requests from his family asking for aid in fixing the issue. Then employment requests from those who had left the company. He ignored Hudai with joy and asked the former programmers to submit to testing for employment. They would have no issues passing the ethics test, signing the non-disclosure agreements and receiving the injection. He recognized the names of some programmers, he directly contacted them, letting them know the truly minimal requirements they had to meet. He was certain he knew. At least Olto, his father in action, did. He was the first of his hires.
Quill Interfaces was still pending approval from the government body. Talan would definitely take the programmers on after meeting with them. Some of the older programmers had protected him in recent years from sexual abuse from his parental group. He knew that they would be loyal to them since they had risked their lives when they could have died to protect him. He knew that plenty of them had revolutionary ideas for educational tools that they dreamed of implementing but could not under the oppression of their employers. The world-changing research he had done with his team in his youth was abandoned for the mundane years ago. Because it was safer to do so for everyone. Not all altruistic ideas are safe, especially when they could fall into the wrong hands. The most groundbreaking of his life's work, besides disabling the Matriarchy's tools, was being able to download knowledge. This meant that they could also engineer a way to do the opposite. Being able to remove or add knowledge and memories was too dangerous. Talan and the research and development team at Hudai Technologies decided to stop their secret research years before he was bound to Nora.
Some of the base communication tools in Nora's interface were not working properly due to the perfect execution of their plan. It was a necessary annoyance. First to go were the Matriarch tools, then communication and administrative tools failed. Nora had to use an external terminal to work, but she had been used to it from her youth. Nora was used to hauling laptops, tablets and luggage around so that it did not really irritate her too much to do so. She spent a lot of time offline and did not communicate much with the outside world other than with her small circle of friends and relatives. Nora smirked at Leilanna, Allurai, Vida, and Amrita's complaints and spurred them on to ask the government to resolve the issues with the programming of their communication tools. She feigned annoyance to the outside world. She was over the moon without awaking to the incessant chimes of communications in her head. It was annoying, and it will be fixed in their operating system should everything go to plan.
The added pressure from powerful allies would certainly help Quill Interfaces get approved for mass usage. Nora assumed it was taking so long because there were no punitive measures available in their interfaces for Matriarchs to discipline individuals with. When the government asked them to add it for protective reasons, they added Peacekeeper tools. Matriarchs could make people fall unconscious and call for assistance through the interface, but she was firm that they would never add disciplinary features to the Interface. Social Credit would be the next thing for her to strive to change. Change was slow and getting the right people like Solina on board to back them and the surprising allies from the lower class.

Nora did some stretches and locked the interface that she had moved down to the living space and headed to the playroom. She looked at Astra and Sirona, who were reading, and she felt a little guilty seeing the three and a quarter year olds learning so seriously. It was hard being so intellectually gifted while developing their emotional intelligence. Being able to comprehend a situation intellectually, but not being able to handle it emotionally, was really difficult for her as a small child. She worried about how they were handling watching them being so tense. They had many sleepless nights since the party, and they had a few fights over the tiniest things. She could see this reflected in Sirona. She was normally so bubbly and social. These days the playroom seemed really sedate to her when she finished off her work for the day. It did not help that they had a huge fight in front of them when Nora wanted to start trying for another baby, and it became an intervention. She did not look down on Van or any other child or male born from a false uterus. Like her feelings about breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact, she felt that they might miss some intimacy. She walked up behind Kadir and ran her hand through his hair. She felt him straighten his posture.
"I apologize for this morning. I was wrong to shout. I promise I will think it through more." Nora said in a low but sincere voice. Kadir turned his head and looked up at her, his eyes watering a little. He did not know that she would talk to him that morning about having another child. He thought three months was not enough of a waiting period between having children, especially since they were much more fertile than other families. They already had seven children and the last delivery was traumatizing seemingly to those who remembered it. He remembered waiting in a panic and the amount of blood she lost last time. They promised that they would stop having discussions without her, but they had broken that promise while she was recovering and discussed the merits of using artificial gestation instead. Janel was sure that it would work regardless of the sex of the child. He was willing to risk the loss, rather than losing her. Nora wanted a lot of children, but she was failing to realize what she had. She was the envy of matriarchs around the world, who had tried for years and only had one or two children naturally.
"Have they been quiet like this all morning?" Nora asked. The room was relatively sedate. Fiona and Ivy were quietly playing together with their soft toys, Kelly, Rex and Sage were all sleeping quietly after a busy morning. Nora sat down and started to stroke Kelly's soft hair. She was normally very energetic.
