Chapter 56: 56. Snow Storm

56. Snow Storm

The first time he had experienced a snow storm he had been safe within the cottage but the fury of the storm was no something to over look, the strong winds was powerful enough to send trees flying. At first he thought it was just a regular snow storm but in a world weaved in the fabric of magic, even the weather carried magical properties and at times these magical properties amplified the weather to levels that superceded normal or sane.

Eryndor already one leg short moved as quickly as he could in search of cover, he prayed there was one near the foot of the mountain. The problem was that the storm was already rolling in its first wave, how long would his poor self stand till he found cover?

He gritted his teeth and swore not to disappoint his master who sacrificed his life to keep him alive, he had swore to have his revenge on the mountain wolf king and he would do just that. As he was scaling the sides of the mountain looking for any form of cover, even a gap in the rocks large enough to accompany him, a rush of cold wind hit him. His face almost froze off, his hair danced in waves and his eyes widened. His elf ears twitched picking up the sound of rushing snow moments before it actually hit.

"Shit! It’s here." He hissed as he braced himself for the rush of snow.

A blizzard appeared and threw him into the wall with force, he barely managed to stay rooted in place. This was just the first wave, he did not have much time to find a cover but he did not have much choice either with his life on the line.

He grunted and hissed as he spent the next few minutes fighting the growing storm and his aching body. Over time the force of the wind grew too much for him to beat and he almost hit sent flying multiple times. After a while he stumbled upon a huge space in the mountain, it was hollow inside and kept the storm outside to some extent. It was a cave big enough to hold more than just him. Eryndor gulped down in fear as to what inhabited the cave, he thought if he was not the first to find the cave. And maybe he would not be the last to discover it anyway.

In a mountain inhabited by various beasts a cover from the snow storm was just as dangerous as being in the actual storm. It was a sure kill box and Eryndor was not in the condition to fight anything after his run in with the dark leather gator beast.

After taking a few seconds to think he chose to go into the cave, he would rather keep warm than stay outside to be killed by the elements. Against that he stood no chance but against a beast he could outsmart it, kill it or escape if things hit worse.

Walking into the cave he found how much spacious it was inside than it’s exterior betrayed. It made him wonder if this was formed naturally or carved out by something. Did caves this big even from naturally? He held his sword before him as he walked deeper into the cave, the first few feets received the light of the day and farther down was a stretch of darkness. Not being able to see into the darkness put him off, what if something was there watching him at the moment.

Eryndor gulped down and threw all of his concentration into his golden eye while closing the other one. It only took a moment for him to see through the dark, there was no sign of body heat which was a relief for the first few seconds before something appeared. A huge ball of red shot at him from his blindspot and he only caught sight of it a moment too late.

"What the hell was that?" Eryndor raised his sword only to get sent flying back a few feet by the ball of heat. His already battered body throbbed in pain as he let out a loud scream. He skidded back a few feet and widened his stance and shifted back into his normal eyesight to see his attacker.

It’s was a huge graceful bird, it looked familiar. He remembered where he had seen it a moment later, it was an owl the size of a human torso, it had huge yellow eyes and graceful white feathers, huge curved talons, yellow scaly legs. A terrifying black beak Eryndor did not want to be at the other end of. On both sides of its head were two black whiskers that protruded from it like antennas, this antenna-like whiskers swayed in Eryndor’s direction.

Eryndor raised his sword and gave the huge owl his most serious glare which was very hard to do where all parts of your body aches with pain. "Why is there always a damn beast everywhere I go on this damn mountain?"

The huge white owl flapped it’s wings gracefully, each downward movement of its wind sending a gust of wind that blew in his direction causing his hair to hover gently. The black in the owls eyes widened and then shrunk as it analysed him, it looked over the trespasser with a guarded expression. It’s eyes fell to his injuries and then his face, it caught sight of his pointy ears and his pitiful face. A moment later the huge owl turned around and flew into a corner of the dark leaving the young elf there.

Eryndor stood there with a confused look on his face, his hand weakly fell to his side letting the sword clatter on the ground. "What on earth just happened? Did that beast just take pity on me?" Even saying the words out loud made him grit his teeth. The feeling of being pitied by a beast was too much for his ego to bear.

Whatever the reason for not attacking him was Eryndor did not care, he waited till night time to go kill the beast for its foolishness. He would obtain another beast core and soul essence and maybe an item, he would gain either way.

He tried not to fall asleep during the day for fear of being attacked by the beast but ended up sleeping. A little after evening time he woke up to see that he was fine, the beast had not attacked him whatsoever, thks infuriated him even more. The fact that a pitiful loser like him was not up to taste for the bloodthirsty beast.

As night drew nearer he hoisted up his sword and walked into the dark, with his only guide being his golden eye that acted as a compass to every heat signature in the cave. He caught sight of a huge ball of red heat that resembled the shape of the huge owl, it was indeed curled like a ball on the ground fast asleep.

Just his luck!

He walked over to its side and aimed for its neck to kill it in one shot, he raised his blade and froze as he saw it’s eyes flash open and stare directly at him. He gulped down and mumbled his curse.

"Shit!"
