62. Fighting The Mountain Wolf King (1)
At first light Eryndor ventures outside the cave to the spot where he had killed the wolf beast the previous night. The snowstorm had hidden it, the cold preserving it for the purpose it would soon serve to its cruel slayer. Using the bird’s eye view he checks the plateau for any sign of the mountain wolf king and as he had expected it was nowhere to be seen, after using Snow to search the surroundings he found it hunting a considerable distance away and Eryndor was to thank for this since his presence had sent the beasts running away. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
This gave him more time and reassurance to climb up the mountain with the dead wolf beast strapped to him. It took less time for him to reach the top than when he had first been there. His body structure was much different and his perseverence much tougher than ever. When he had reached the top he set the beast in the middle of the plateau and then took the moment to rest and relief his weak bones.
All he had to do now was wait and prepare his mind and body for the inevitable clash between the two former and upcoming apex predators in the area. He did not let anything aside from these disrupt his thoughts. He had to determine his victory, he had seen the beast’s might, he had experienced it first hand, if he wanted it to feel the same level of fear it had inflicted on him he would have to be much more ruthless than it ever was.
He felt a strong feeling of caution shoot into his head and knew immediately that it was a message from Snow to him. He shifted his eye view to her’s and saw the white fur mountain wolf coming back to its throne that stood over the mountainside. Eryndor immediately went to work and cut another part of the beast to let blood flow to the ice covered ground, it was not much but enough to give the sweet smell of blood to the awakened beast. Not that he would know what blood smelled like.
He had tested this theory on various beasts that fed on flesh, whenever they got the scent of blood they would actually on it, some going into a mad frenzy. An awakened beast would be much smarter but that did not mean it would not act to the smell of fresh blood. Especially a beast that liked to toy with its meal.
Eryndor put some considerable distance between the point where the awakened beast would come from and the dead wolf beast, he buried himself in the snow and shut his eyes to the world. Relying only in Snow’s vision for assurance, all he did was barely sustain his body with flame body tempering art. He would have to make his presence as unnoticeable as he could. The mountain wolf king did not come back to its play spot immediately Eryndor had to wait hours in the snow for it to arrive, this was not a bother to him. He had been training to withstand the harsh cold for as long as he could and this paid off well.
His thoughts began to stray after the long hours of boredom, try as much as he could to stop it it continued to blossom till he was entranced by it. His thoughts went back to when he was much younger, when he had grown up behind the castle walls. He had been a degenerate and prankster then, taking pride in the systems ridiculous quests. He then recalled his time with his family and the lessons he learned from them. He also thought of Thalor, the captain of the guards and wondered how he must have been doing.
Eryndor could stopped to think of his most precious moments in the elf castle, and only one face appeared at that thought— Elantha. He missed his dear sister the most. Snow alerted him of the appearance of the wolf king, he knew it sensed that he was distracted. Another reason why having the beast by his side was a blessing.
Eryndor prepared himself to face the beast moments before it appeared standing on the huge platform of the plateau, it landed like a missile it’s form as commanding as ever. All of this Eryndor observed from Snow’s eyes while he readied himself for his assault.
He watched the mountain wolf king look at the corpse of the wolf king, it then proceeded to sniff at the air and observe it’s surrounding. It did not bother to hide the fact that it knew about the obvious trap, it started to pace around the beast corpse and look around it’s surrounding with an eerie calmness. Eryndor hated how pompous the beast always acted like it was untouchable, he would be the one to send that head rolling off it’s body.
Confident in his allies ability to create a distraction he focussed all of his killing intent as he opened his eyes, Snow knew this was the signal to attack. She dive down sharply at the wolf who turned to look at her like a joke, at close proximity she opened her mouth and let out a beam of blue energy from her ice breath in the same some Eryndor kicked out of the snow he had been using as a cover with explosive force.
The sensitive ears of the mountain wolf king picked up on both movements at both time but failed to react to Eryndor in time because he came from behind the beast. The wave of blue energy struck it in its face but it shook it off like it was nothing. Eryndor had expected that the fur of the awakened beast was able to withstand the ice breath of his beast of the normal rank that was why this attack was used for the diversion.
A second more was all he needed to reach the back of the mountain wolf king he unsheath his sword and struck it from behind. There was a loud clang and sparks of light as the inconceivable happened.
The beast now had its head to him, it had blocked his blade with one of its front paw, it’s eyes widened with bloodlust as their faces were inches from each other. The burn mark on its face a testament to their last meeting.
Eryndor had not expected it to show such insane speed but he welcomed the challenged.
"Oh, I’m sure you remember me." Eryndor said with a mad gleam on his face.
