Chapter 754: 754 Autumn Harvest

Wei Kaiyun still wasn’t willing, and in the end, Jiang Xinyu had no choice but to say, "Can’t you just ask Feifei tomorrow? Ask her what she wants to do?"

"My daughter won’t always live in the countryside, right? What’s the point of experiencing the big harvest?"

Listening to Wei Kaiyun’s words, Jiang Xinyu felt like giving him a whack, it was so irritating.

She decided to ignore him, otherwise, he’d just get more worked up.

Since his wife was ignoring him, Wei Kaiyun bothered her until he finally calmed down after another round of back-and-forth.

"Tomorrow you’ll be working, can’t you settle down for a bit?"

"I’m fine, do you want to try again?"

This time, Jiang Xinyu truly ignored him.

The next morning, Sister-in-law Liu steamed buns, millet porridge, and stir-fried shredded radish with chili.

Wei Kaiyun hugged Jiang Feifei and quietly asked her not to go to the field, but Feifei refused.

"Dad, if I get too tired, I’ll come back."

"Feifei, you’ll get tanned."

"I have a straw hat, Dad, don’t worry."

Wei Kaiyun had no choice but to instruct his nephew and son to keep an eye on Feifei to ensure she wouldn’t get hurt or too tired.

Jiang Xinyu watched Wei Kaiyun behave this way, finding it quite over-the-top.

It made people want to slap him just seeing him being so petty.

When the bell rang, the whole family, except Jiang Xinyu and the two small ones, set off with straw hats and water flasks.

Jiang Xinyu soaked some dried goods, cut off a piece of preserved meat, and made buns. Rice alone wasn’t filling, so let’s make two dishes. Also, steam some bread for Zhao Xiaoli.

Jiang Xinyu knew it was lucky there was no livestock to feed at home, otherwise, things would be even busier.

She just finished tidying up and heard the sound of a tractor outside. It was Chaoyang and his group returning; these two young men were really good, able to endure hardships. Such people are bound for success if given a chance.

After feeding the two little ones and washing their diapers, she locked the door and went to the fields.

Seeing that the peppers were almost red, her family only had ten canning jars, which was not enough; she needed to find more because they couldn’t run out of chili sauce.

Jiang Xinyu knew that the upcoming years would revolve around food.

She picked string beans, eggplants, and cucumbers.

Hastily she went home to carry baskets; there were many eggplants and string beans that needed to be picked before they got too old.

She brought back a basket of eggplants and half a bag of string beans. String beans went halfway cooked in boiling water, then were laid out to dry in the yard.

Eggplants were cut directly into thick slices and sun-dried. Putting them in stews in winter would surely be delicious.

Sister-in-law Liu had already dried a batch, but with more family members in winter, having too few vegetables wouldn’t do at all.

There was still time to buy two large vats in town to pickle some vegetables.

Autumn’s harvest season is endless work for a hardworking person.

Actually, Jiang Xinyu wanted to go to the mountains, but the two little ones couldn’t be left alone, so she planned to go after the big harvest was over.

The mountains in autumn are bountiful and must have lots of good things.

After the vegetables were sun-dried, Jiang Xinyu once more went to the field, pulling some peanuts to steam with buns for lunch.

After feeding the two little ones at ten thirty, she let them play on the heated brick bed by themselves.

Time to start cooking, with two layers of steamer trays, one for rice and the other for buns, while the preserved meat simmered below. Nothing else, just pure boiled meat.

Hot pot ingredients were also prepared, waiting for their return home to pour hot oil over them.

Cucumbers were mixed with vinegar, sesame oil, and chicken essence, particularly appetizing.

This time, she didn’t mix tomatoes, instead preparing tomato egg soup.

Also, stir-fried garlicky cabbage, completing the meal.

But it was already eleven thirty, and why hadn’t the bell rung yet?

Jiang Xinyu went back in to check the two little ones, still asleep, so she locked the door, going out to ask around.

Just in time to see the little girl carrying a basket.

"Hello, Teacher Jiang."

"Hello, Lanzi, what are you up to?"

"Going to bring food to my family. Every year during autumn harvest, we bring meals directly to the field so everyone can rest a bit."

Jiang Xinyu frowned; this couldn’t do. No matter how urgent it was, they needed a rest at noon.

"Teacher Jiang, are you going to bring food to Master Wei?"

"I’m going to call Master Wei and the others back for a meal."

"Teacher Jiang, I can go call them."

"Thank you, Lanzi."

The little girl smiled silently, carrying her large basket step by step away.

Back home, Jiang Xinyu hurried to prepare water for them, also making tea sweetened with a bit of rock sugar for them to drink sweetly. When time allowed, she’d make milk tea for the kids.

About half an hour later, everyone at home returned, each covered in sweat with sun-reddened faces.

The family washed up and sat down to eat. After the meal, they wanted to help clean the table, but Jiang Xinyu refused, urging them to rest quickly; there was only half an hour left, even a quick nap with their eyes closed would help.

Wei Kaiyun held Feifei’s hand, "Daughter, don’t go this afternoon, it’s too hot. Look, your face is all red from the sun."

"It’s okay, I can handle it."

"Feifei, your mom has to take care of your brother and sister and do the cooking by herself at home. Can you stay home and watch your siblings while your mom works?"

Eventually, Jiang Feifei agreed. She knew this was her dad not wanting her to get tired, but she didn’t feel it was a big deal. On the contrary, she was quite happy, working with all the village kids together was fun.

When the afternoon bell rang, they set off again as a group of five.

Jiang Xinyu didn’t wake her daughter up; she hadn’t done farm work before and must be really tired.

Dinner would be leek and egg buns, tasty and simple.

Hearing the sound of a tractor outside, it must be hauling in the grain; much faster than the ox cart.

With nothing to do in the afternoon, she’d go to the wheat yard to do some work, if nothing else.

The leeks were picked and washed, left in the kitchen. After feeding the two little ones, she checked the time. Feifei should be waking up; otherwise, she wouldn’t sleep at night.

"Feifei, Mom already made some bread. I’m going to the wheat yard to see if there’s any work to do. Can you watch your brother and sister at home? I’ll be back in an hour and a half."

"Okay, Mom, you go ahead." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Arriving at the wheat yard, Jiang Xinyu saw a group of people unloading a cart, with Chaoyang and Xiang Dong eating steamed buns.

"You two haven’t had lunch yet?"

"Teacher Jiang, we missed it."

"Wait, I’ll get you some steamed buns from home."

"No need, Teacher Jiang. We’re going to haul corn cobs now, no time."

"Alright, make sure you two drink plenty of water."

After saying this, Jiang Xinyu also helped with unloading. Those staying at the wheat yard were all women over sixty and a few young kids.
