Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space-Chapter 755 Autumn Harvest
After the truck was unloaded, Chaoyang and the others drove away with the tractor. A group of people gathered around the pile of corn cobs and began to peel them.
Jiang Xinyu wasn’t very adept at it at first and left the innermost layer of soft husk, which should be tied together so that the corn is easier to handle in bad weather.
The oldest ones sat there tying the corn, neatly arranging them in a circle with the tails facing inwards, placing a wooden stick in the center, then tying the husks together layer by layer. This way, they dry more easily, and at night, they can be covered with a straw mat.
As Jiang Xinyu was in her prime, she was responsible for transporting the corn using a basket.
This was truly hard labor. After just a few trips, Jiang Xinyu was sweating profusely.
"Teacher Jiang, don’t rush. Take it slow, and put less in the basket."
Jiang Xinyu felt a bit embarrassed. Two young girls, about ten years old, could lift a basket together, yet as an adult, she found it very strenuous to carry one on her back.
"It’s okay, auntie. I’ll adjust gradually."
Jiang Xinyu gritted her teeth and worked for an hour, her back soaked with sweat.
It was time to go back and feed the two children, so she mentioned it and hurried back.
"This Teacher Jiang is really something. She’s someone with great skills. Though she’s not good at manual labor, she’s willing to work. That’s really commendable."
The women at the threshing ground all praised her. You can tell if someone is genuine.
When Jiang Xinyu got home, the two little ones were still asleep. She quickly washed her hands and face.
"Mom, why are you so sweaty?"
"I was carrying corn baskets at the threshing ground."
"Mom, when little brother and sister are asleep, I’ll go with you next time." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"Alright, once they’re asleep, we’ll go together."
Jiang Xinyu worked only twice before deciding not to go again. Feifei stayed there, while she had to go home to take care of the two little ones and prepare dinner.
In the evening, when Wei Kaiyun returned from work with his wife’s face flushed, he knew she had been working hard and genuinely felt sorry for her.
So, after lying down at night, Wei Kaiyun strongly insisted that Jiang Xinyu not go again the next day.
"There are already enough of us. Doing this exhausts you too much. It will wear you out."
"I’m not as weak as you think. I can handle it. Besides, there’s nothing going on at home, and the two little ones can sleep for nearly two hours once they’re full."
Wei Kaiyun really couldn’t argue with Jiang Xinyu. He was starting to have thoughts about leaving the countryside, but he knew his wife would never agree. She was afraid it would cause trouble.
The three little ones were very tired today. In the middle of the night, Wei Kaiyun checked on them and found them sleeping soundly.
The next morning, breakfast was meat buns. The meat was salted pork boiled the previous night and chopped finely, steamed with chives, along with rice porridge, salted duck eggs, red pickles, and stir-fried shredded carrots. Anyway, it was quite a hearty breakfast.
Those who had to work went to work. Feifei stayed at home and worked at the threshing ground, getting along quite well with the little girls, making Wei Kaiyun not object.
This morning, Jiang Xinyu still went to work, but noticed some young men she didn’t recognize. After asking around, she learned they were Master Yang’s subordinates. They arrived yesterday and stayed at the commune, cooking their own meals.
Eight people went with Chaoyang and the others this morning, leaving four here, so they came to help. When the tractor returns, they also have to unload it.
They seemed to be very honest young men. How could they be Old Yang’s subordinates?
Aren’t they supposed to look fierce and menacing, with intimidating expressions?
With four young men joining, the work progressed much faster, so the village women were particularly happy to see them and even talked about introducing them to some girls.
Jiang Xinyu found it quite amusing, noticing as an outsider that sometimes excessive enthusiasm could be burdensome for others.
This morning, Chaoyang and Xiang Dong still managed three trips. That’s 12,000 corn cobs. Combined with yesterday’s, they should be able to bring them all back by tomorrow.
In the afternoon, Chaoyang found Wei Kaiyun. "Master, the brick factory has a lot of defective products, those burned improperly or broken in half. I talked to their factory head, and for twenty bucks, we can take them all back.
I reckon with that pile, Xiang Dong and I won’t be able to haul it all in half a day even in the morning."
"Alright, we can use them to pave the floor and save a lot of money. Good job."
Chaoyang beamed with excitement at Wei Kaiyun’s praise.
In the evening, the family dined on meat buns again, rice porridge, sautéed green beans with salted pork, and chili and carrot strips.
"Xinyu, I’ll send some of our vegetables to Old Yang’s men tomorrow."
"Alright, I’ll prepare some for you later. Do you want to give them some meat too?"
Wei Kaiyun shook his head, "No need. I’ll see if they don’t have any oil, maybe give them some."
Jiang Xinyu didn’t wait until tomorrow. That evening, Wei Kaiyun brought them half a basket of green beans, half a basket of eggplants, cucumbers, and tomatoes.
The one who led the group recognized Wei Kaiyun and thanked him with a smile. Knowing they brought oil and grain, they were relieved.
"If you need anything, just find me. If it’s urgent, go to my house and look for my wife."
They nodded, understanding the situation. They knew a factory was being built there, and they could work here in the future.
The next day, Li Yungui only let his son and nephew do one round trip before returning to transport the corn stalks, allowing more space to be freed up.
This year’s corn stalks were directly cut at the base with a sickle. The rotary tiller can churn up the roots, making the process much quicker.
In the Li Family Village, the autumn harvest had started, while the surrounding village areas hadn’t begun yet; the corn wasn’t ripe enough.
Wang Shulin came over to see Old Yang today. "I’m really anxious. They’ve been harvesting for two days already; today is the third day. I think we still need four or five days."
"Village Chief Wang, you can go to the Li Family Village and see their progress."
"I planned to go today, and I came here to borrow a bicycle."
"No need, I’ll come with you to check it out, and we’ll drive there."
The two of them arrived at Li Family Village and saw no idle people around. From afar, they could hear the chugging sound of tractors.
"Old Yang, I’m going to find Li Yungui."
"Alright, I’ll go visit my friend."
The two of them separated. Old Yang went to the Wei Family’s place but found it locked, so he went to the construction site. He saw the foundation had already been laid, with stacks of green bricks beside it. The progress was fast.
But his men weren’t there? Did they go to work too?
Old Yang returned to the village and asked a child, only to find out many people were working at the threshing ground, so he went there too.
When Jiang Xinyu saw Old Yang approaching, she immediately put down her work. "Master Yang, what brings you here? Anything the matter?"
Old Yang’s brothers quickly ran over. "Brother Yang, you’re here."
