Rebirth: The Comeback of the Girl-Chapter 4 - : Close Call but Safe
Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Close Call but Safe
Zhen Yu peeked out from behind Han Mingyue, wanting to check on her brother's situation.
Han Mingyue suddenly turned around and covered her eyes, saying without a choice, "Don't look! Your brother is not dressed!"
Suddenly blinded, Zhen Yu instinctively closed her eyes.
Then, with a bit of embarrassment, she sheepishly lowered her head.
Seeing that the girl was obediently standing still, Han Mingyue then let go of her hands.
-
Grandpa Fu and Mr. Han together pulled Zhen Yan onto the shore, who was unconscious by then.
"Yan Youliang, come up quickly! Someone has already rescued those kids."
Grandpa Fu pressed on Zhen Yan's abdomen while speaking to Mr. Han.
"Ah!!" Hearing this, Mr. Han scrambled up the shore swiftly.
Being a doctor, after he took over, Zhen Yan spit out some water and regained consciousness.
Mrs. Zhen stood closely by, and as soon as her son awoke, she immediately hugged him and burst into tears.
-
Mr. Han turned away from the scene to help others, calling Han Mingyue to assist.
Looking concernedly at the girl in front of him, he cautioned, "Xiao Yu, don't wander around."
Zhen Yu nodded.
Han Mingyue hesitated for a moment, then added, "Also, don't look around."
"Okay."
Zhen Yu simply stood there with her head down, straining her ears to listen to the sounds of her mother and brother.
Only when it seemed like Mrs. Zhen had cried enough, shifting from loud sobbing to sniffling, did Zhen Yu finally speak.
"Mom! Is my brother dressed yet?"
"It's alright! Come here!"
Zhen Yu looked up and saw a towel covering her brother...
Walking over and crouching down, she decided to ask a question that had puzzled her since her past life, "Why did you swim here? Didn't you know the water is treacherous?"
"We were washed down from above the sluice gate; it must be because they released water from the upper reaches!" Zhen Yan weakly replied.
Zhen Yu nodded and kept silent.
Perhaps in her past life, everyone assumed the children swam here out of playfulness!
At least she had never heard those rescued kids mention being washed down, nor did any gossip about this incident spread later.
Zhen Yu did not ponder deeply, simply looking into her brother's eyes and asking, "Will you go down to the river to play in the water again?"
Before Zhen Yan could reply, Mrs. Zhen scolded, "What river?! What water play?! From now on, don't even think about it!"
Zhen Yan drooped his head, clearly still frightened, and said, "Mom! I was wrong! I won't go into the river again!"
Zhen Yu thought to herself: "He only said he won't go into the river! But he didn't say he won't play with water! Seems like he's still not scared enough!"
Even though her brother obediently admitted his mistake, Mrs. Zhen did not let him off, and as Zhen Yu listened for a while to her mother repeating the same nagging phrases she remembered from her childhood, she stood up and silently walked towards a deserted direction.
Fu Yu had also regained consciousness, Mrs. Fu was holding him and continuously comforting him, Grandpa Fu standing not far away silently smoking.
"Xiao Yu, don't be scared, I will get your dad to take you, and we will properly practice swimming!"
"Alright."
"You said it yourself, didn't you? This was an accident! We can't lose heart because of one mishap; we just can't go into the river again, we will find a safer place for swimming in the future! Did you hear?"
"Sure."
Zhen Yu heard this brief conversation from a moderate distance and slightly shook her head.

Though Mrs. Fu was open-minded, Fu Yu was clearly terrified, and it was uncertain whether he would dare to go into the water again.
Looking back far away towards the direction of the conversation, Zhen Yu noticed Grandpa Fu looking at her. She blinked and smiled at the old man.
As he walked up to her, Zhen Yu started the conversation first, "Grandpa Fu."
"Xiao Yu! I'm a bit puzzled, how did you know they were drowning?"
Zhen Yu had already been questioned once by Han Mingyue, so she naturally had a well-thought-out plan and decided not to change her story.
"I had a nightmare that they were drowning! I tried to persuade them not to come, but no one would listen! So..."
Unexpectedly, Grandpa Fu instantly believed her, and even filled in the story by himself, "So you treated it as real and shouted for help?"
Zhen Yu squeezed out a somewhat embarrassed expression and lowered her head.
"A blind cat ran into a dead rat! Your dream must've been a warning!" exclaimed Grandpa Fu. "This is the blessing of the Goddess of Mercy!"
Surprisingly, Grandpa Fu was so superstitious that he was easily fooled. After he left, Zhen Yu turned to look at Mr. Han's side.
Mr. Han was performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the boy who was the last to be pulled up. The boy was covered with someone's oversized jacket sleeve, while Han Mingyue stood by, watching her father's every move without distraction.
Zhen Yu, from her angle, could see Han Mingyue's profile, mirroring his actions, but she was watching him.
Suddenly, Han Mingyue walked towards Zhen Yu and stopped opposite her, asking, "Do you have time now?"
"Let's talk after Uncle Han finishes saving people." Zhen Yu looked him in the eye and replied.
Upon hearing this, Han Mingyue took a step aside, turned away, and continued to watch his father save the boy.
Zhen Yu no longer looked at him but also watched Mr. Han. Their eyes were all focused on the scene ahead.
Finally, the boy coughed and opened his eyes, looking around in terror.
Seeing this, Mr. Han quickly comforted him, "Don't be scared, child! You've been rescued! It's all right now!"
Among the four drowning boys, only this one was alone. Hearing Han Youliang's comforting voice, he instinctively threw himself into the arms of the nearest man, Han Youliang, and burst into a torrent of tears.
Perhaps it was because his parents were not by his side, or maybe because he was the most severely affected by the drowning, only he cried, and his crying was heart-wrenching.
The moment he struggled up, Han Mingyue suddenly stepped forward, blocking Zhen Yu's view.
"..."
"..."
Zhen Yu raised her head to look at Han Mingyue somewhat speechlessly, seeing that he was also staring at her, equally speechless.
Zhen Yu tactfully turned away.
Han Mingyue stepped forward to stand beside her, looking towards the river and asked, "Can we talk about it now?"
"I had a nightmare that they were drowning here!" Zhen Yu succinctly continued to deceive him.
Han Mingyue looked at Zhen Yu sideways for a while, and Zhen Yu calmly met his gaze.
Believe it or not! If you don't, what can you do? Anyway, I've given you a reason.
After about three to five seconds, Han Mingyue changed the subject, "Let's go, it's time to go back."
After all, the four boys had only drowned, they weren't missing any limbs, and a few boys had simply swum back to shore by themselves.
A large group of people were either walking or cycling, heading towards the family area of the transshipment station.
The uncles who had gone into the water to save others, all rode their bicycles ahead to go home and change. One of them had rescued his own son and took him along. The boy who cried bitterly was being led by Grandpa Fu, with Zhen Yu and Han Mingyue slowly following behind this old man and young boy.
The reason these boys were able to play together was that they all lived in the back and front yards.
The yards in Zhen Yu's area were built and allocated by the unit her parents worked for, and those living there were all former employees of the transshipment station.
