Chapter 40: Kill her!

"D...Di...Did you just see that?" She asked, her mind racing.

"Yes." Lord Algrith said.

"I, I can mend glasses too!" Luciana asked with widened eyes.

"You don’t have memory loss, do you? You are blessed with all the gifts, my lady," Lord Algrith said; his tone was matter-of-fact; it was as if he was talking about the weather.

"Is there any way I can know when I’m about to do these weird things? It always happens out of the blue. What will happen if I start to do them in front of people? It would be a disaster," Luciana lamented, and then she felt as if she was in a dream, or as if she was seeing a vision of the future.

"Kill her!"

"She’s a witch!"

"Burn her alive!"

Different images of people looking at her with fear and scorn and calling her a witch flashed past her eyes. It felt real, and Luciana began to feel as if she was in the middle of a crowd and people were throwing things at her—rotten vegetables, eggs, you name it. She began to feel scared, and all of a sudden, the cracks in the mirror started appearing again.

Luciana turned to look at the mirror that had cracks forming on it as if spider webs were forming in it and began to feel more afraid, especially when the vase beside her made a "bang" sound, and she turned to look at how the vase had been reduced to broken pieces and shards in horror.

"Calm down, princess," Lord Algrith said; even he was surprised why the princess’s magic was suddenly going haywire.

"Take deep breaths, yes, slow breaths; calm down; think happy thoughts," Lord Algrith said in a calm voice. Luciana tried to calm down, trying to take slow and steady breaths as the cat suggested, but because she was panicking, nothing was happening. It was as if there were explosives in the vases and glasses as they began to crack and burst one after the other like clockwork, becoming shards in the next minute.

"It’s not working!" She exclaimed, and another vase behind her burst loudly, causing her to jump and scream in fright.

"Calm down, princess, don’t panic," Lord Algrith said. At the same time, Dora’s worried voice and frantic knocks sounded on the door.

"My lady, my lady, are you alright?"

Luciana looked at the door in horror.

"I’m fine! Don’t worry about me," she yelled at the door.

"Can I come in, my lady? I want to talk to you," Dora said, still feeling that something was wrong with her princess.

"No, go away; I want to be alone," she said, and Dora’s suspicions grew stronger.

"My lady, please open the door," Dora insisted.

’Ugh! How stubborn,’ Luciana thought, and she was about to give Dora a stern warning when she heard Dominic’s voice behind the door.

"Is something wrong with the princess consort?" Dominic asked Dora.

"I’m not sure, but I heard her screaming, and she doesn’t want to open the door and let me in. I’m worried; she has never acted this way before. I think something is wrong with her; could there be an intruder?" Dora asked.

"Move away; I need to kick the door open. Nothing can happen to the princess consort under my watch," Dominic said and was about to follow through with what he wanted to do when he heard Luciana’s stern voice full of authority.

"I said I want to be alone. No one is allowed to come in without my permission. Disobey me, and I will let the prince know how you mistreated me in his absence."

Dora and Dominic stared at each other behind the closed door in contemplation and hesitation.

"I’m sorry, Princess Consort, I’ll take the punishment from the prince when he arrives. I can’t allow something to happen to you on my watch," Dominic said, kicking the door open and rushing inside to see if someone else was there with her.

’I’m calm, I’m calm, happy thoughts, happy thoughts, flowers, butterflies. A big garden, full of roses and... And Nicholas. Nicholas is kissing my forehead gently, and his scent is invading my nostrils. Fresh earthy scent and mint,’ Luciana chanted these words over and over again in her mind with her eyes closed.

She didn’t even move from where she stood and took in deep, slow, and steady breaths when she heard Dora gasp.

"My lady, what happened here?" Dora asked with widened eyes, looking at the broken vases, shards on the floor, and the cracked dressing mirror.

Dominic, on the other hand, was looking around the princess’ chambers for signs of an intruder or assassin.

Luciana calmly opened her eyes and stared at Dora with feigned annoyance before pointing to the cat.

"He caused it."

Lord Algrith: "..."

"Little princess, you should keep your story straight. I’m innocent, okay? Why make me a scapegoat?" Lord Algrith said. Luciana heard him complaining and rolled her eyes at him. ’Scapegoat my butt; shouldn’t it be scape cat instead?’

"What were all of you doing that you didn’t even notice such a big cat entering my chambers? I was trying to catch it, and it broke all the vases," Luciana said as if she were reprimanding them.

"I’m sorry about that, Princess Consort; I will get rid of the cat immediately," Dominic said and unsheathed his sword the next second.

Luciana’s and Lord Algrith’s eyes popped wide seeing Dominic’s defensive and aggressive stance.

"No, wait!" Luciana yelled.

"Don’t touch it. I wanted to catch it because I want it for myself," she added and walked towards Lord Algrith, trying to avoid the broken pieces of the vases that were littered on the floor as she approached him.

The words "You better cooperate with me" were written all over her face. Lord Algrith didn’t even act unwilling and just stayed where he was even when Luciana approached, causing Luciana to blink at him.

"Will you act like you are unwilling to be caught by me at least?" She mouthed the words in the direction only Lord Algrith would see.

"Cute, cute cat, please allow me to carry you, okay? I just want us to be friends. Please don’t cause a mess again; I just want to be friends with you," Luciana said as she tiptoed to the cat, who just lay there lazily.

’Wasn’t this the cat that had caused a disaster in the Princess Consort’s chambers a moment ago? Why was it so docile? It even looked—cute?’ These were the thoughts running in both Dominic and Dora’s minds.

Luciana, who was now only two steps away from Lord Algrith, was about to curse at him in anger for not playing along when it finally moved. It stood on all fours and pressed its body against the floor with its tail standing straight in the air and fur standing on end.

Its eyes blazed in anger as its pupils dilated. It let out a growl-like guttural sound and hissed at Luciana defensively with its whiskers shaking in anger.

"Haha, its reaction is a tad bit slow," Luciana explained awkwardly.
