Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 648 - 333: Neither Side Gives In_2
"Erlang’s wife, I’m only doing this for your own good. Everyone in this room is watching. If something bad happens, it’s all your own doing," Lady Chiang said.
Zhao Xiue’s wrist hurt. After all, she had bound feet and was also pregnant. With her wrist subdued by Lady Chiang, she couldn’t do much. The people from the second branch had gone to the west room, and the people in this room...
Zhao Xiue glanced around and knew that it was unlikely anyone in the room would take her side.
"You’re nothing but a smiling tiger," Zhao Xiue muttered under her breath. She knew,
Lady Chiang surely heard her, but her expression didn’t change in the slightest, still gripping Zhao Xiue tightly.
"Big sister-in-law, you’re so domineering. I can’t even go out to relieve myself without your permission. Fine, I’ll just sit here with our mother," Zhao Xiue said with a cold laugh.
The sisters-in-law both returned with forced smiles, sitting beside Lady Zhou.
Sitting in the east room, they could clearly hear the constant commotion of rummaging through wardrobes, the sounds of tugging and tearing, crying, and cursing from the west room.
Zhao Xiue and Lady Chiang exchanged glances, one with a sneer, the other with an indifferent face.
Indeed, it was a case of neither wanting to let the other have peace. Once rifling through the chests had become inevitable, Lady Chiang’s attempts to intervene in the west room were futile. Staying behind and keeping company with Lady Zhou was a brilliant move. Moreover, Lady Chiang blocked Zhao Xiue as well.
From the sounds in the west room, it was certain that Lian Shouyi and the others were taking the chance to help themselves while searching through things. Zhao Xiue wanted to leave, probably to claim her share, and Lady Chiang, of course, wouldn’t let her have her way.
Lian Manman thought for a moment, then also headed towards the west room.
The west room was in complete disarray. The two chests that Lady Zhou hadn’t searched last time had been opened. Lady He, Lian Shouyi, along with Si Lang, Liulang, and Lian Yaya were bent over, rummaging through them, stuffing items into the children’s arms as they searched.
Lady He suddenly cried out "Ah!" Lian Shouyi, beside her, turned his head and saw a shimmering gold lock piece in her hand.
Lian Shouyi snatched the gold lock piece right away, tucking it into his own bosom.
"Ignorant woman, what’s this worth? Keep looking, the good stuff must be inside. Dump everything out of the chest and search," he said.
Seeing the gold lock piece taken, Lady He pouted but still did as Lian Shouyi said. She really tipped the chest over, dumping all its contents onto the ground.
After finishing with the chest by his side, Lian Shouyi hurried to another cabinet.
Lian Shouren, Lian Jizu, and Lady Gu, blocked by Erlang and Sanlang, couldn’t get close. Only Lian Duo, being short, slipped past the blockade and rushed to Lian Yaya’s side.
"That’s mine, put it down," Lian Duo screamed, trying to snatch a silk flower from Lian Yaya’s hand.
"You little brat, what’s yours? All these things belong to us," Si Lang said, pushing Lian Duo to the ground with a shove.
Lian Duo immediately burst into loud crying.
"It’s a robbery, they’re going to kill someone," Lady Gu couldn’t help crying out as well.
...
The chaos finally calmed down after Old Master Lian finished smoking a pouch of dry tobacco and flew into a rage, taking Lian Shouli and Lian Shouxin out to intervene.
Erlang, Sanlang, Lian Shouyi, and Lady He brought two full boxes of items that they had rummaged out of several chests in the west room into the east room.
"Did you really go through your elder brother’s things?" Old Master Lian slapped Lian Shouyi across the face with a smack.
"Father, mother," Lian Shouyi touched his face, not annoyed, and placed a cloth bundle on the kang (a traditional Chinese bed-stove). Inside the bundle were two strings of copper coins, three or four pieces of silver, and another pile of loose copper coins.
"It was found in a secret compartment of the chest, hidden very carefully," Lian Shouyi said.
"It must have been found in your sister-in-law’s chest, right?" Zhao Xiue interjected.
"Yes, yes," Lady He and Erlang both echoed in agreement.
"Sister-in-law is famously virtuous throughout the nearby villages. When Jizu needed just one string of coins, he begged and pleaded, to the point where our grandparents couldn’t eat or sleep. What exactly was sister-in-law planning to do with her secret stash of silver?" Zhao Xiue sneered.
Lady He then pointed out the silk garments and fabrics in the chest to Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou.
The two families began to argue again.
"Father, we should go do some work," whispered Lian Manman to Lian Shouxin as she covertly entered the eastern room when no one was paying attention.
Seeing Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou surrounded and argued with by the members of the first and second families, Lian Shouxin sighed and left with Lian Manman.
"Division of the family was so easy back then, but this time, who knows how long the bickering will go on," Lian Manman said after returning to the West Wing Room, relaying the situation from the Upper Room. Lady Zhang sighed, "I get anxious just listening from this room. Let’s go to the shop to work; it’s more peaceful there."
The family went to the shop, and by the time they returned, it was already midnight. The Upper Room and the eastern wing room had dim candlelight flickering within, casting shadows on the windows.
"Looks like they are about to rest," said Lady Zhang.
From the eastern wing room, suddenly there was a sharp scream from Lady He, but it was immediately silenced.
"What’s happening, scaring people in the dead of night," Lady Zhang exclaimed, startled.
"Uneven distribution of the spoils, hopefully they don’t come to blows," Lian Manman murmured softly.
"Sanlang, is everything already divided?" Seeing Lian Shouli come out to pour water, Lian Shouxin asked.
"It was just a lot of arguing. Erlang claims Eldest Brother still has money hidden with Huahua and wants Eldest Brother to produce the money. If not, he wants a promissory note written. Eldest Brother says there is no money... The division will continue tomorrow... and tomorrow I wanted to go to work."
...
The next day, after having lunch in the shop, Lian Manman returned to the old house to find the dispute in the Upper Room was still ongoing.
Lian Manman shook her head and sighed, too lazy to listen or look anymore, just about to return to the West Wing Room when the sound of a carriage came from outside the main gate.
"Old Lian Family, you have distinguished guests!" someone shouted loudly from outside the courtyard.
