Chapter 748: Chapter 383: Lian Manman’s Persuasion_1

Having made up her mind, Lian Manman didn’t immediately go to the Upper Room. Lady Zhou was probably still seething with anger. Going there now would be like walking into the line of fire. Lian Manman wasn’t in a hurry; she believed that after hearing the words passed on by Lady Chiang, Lady Gu would soon take action.

Others might not have a way to appease Lady Zhou, but Lady Gu most certainly did.

Lian Manman strolled around the courtyard and found Liulang squatting in the corner, gnawing on a dried cucumber. She beckoned him over and gave him a few instructions.

"...Keep an eye out, and when you come to deliver a message to me, I’ll give you two pieces of trough cake," Lian Manman told Liulang.

For Liulang, listening at the base of the wall and delivering messages to Lian Manman in exchange for the trough cake he usually couldn’t get was an offer too good to pass up. Happily, he headed straight for the Upper Room.

Lian Manman returned to the West Wing Room and began packing up things with Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi while waiting for news from Liulang.

"Manman, what are you up to?" Lady Zhang asked as she saw Lian Manman running in and out.

"Nothing," Lian Manman replied.

Of course, Lady Zhang didn’t believe her.

"Mother, truly, it’s nothing... Just thinking... after grandmother and my uncle’s family leave, she should focus on what she needs to do and not worry or think about us all the time," Lian Manman added.

After a long wait, Liulang came running to the West Wing Room, bursting with excitement.

"My uncle’s wife and my cousin tried to persuade grandma... they gave her a big piece of cloth..." Liulang wasn’t eloquent and had an ordinary memory. He stammered through his speech, but as long as the listener was patient, communication was not a problem. "Grandma isn’t angry now, my uncle’s wife and cousin have returned to the west room."

"So now, who else is in grandma’s room?" Lian Manman asked after hearing the news.

"Just grandma and our old aunt," Liulang replied. Old Master Lian had gone out to pay visits, obviously to chat with old acquaintances in the village about the day’s events and embellish some details.

Lian Manman was very satisfied. She took out a package of trough cakes from the cupboard and gave two pieces to Liulang.

Seeing the trough cakes, Liulang’s mouth immediately watered. He took the cakes, stepped out of the room, squatted in the corner outside, and wolfed down the two pieces. After wiping his mouth clean with his sleeve, he left.

"Liulang is getting wise," Lian Manman said. Among Lian Shouyi’s children, aside from the older Erlang and Sanlang, Si Lang was headstrong. Whenever there were tasty treats, Si Lang often monopolized the shares meant for Liulang and Lian Yaya.

In the past, Liulang was always Si Lang’s lackey, but recently, he had been secretly passing messages for Lian Manman, keeping it from Si Lang and eating the rewards himself.

"That child is slow-witted; only cares about eating," Lady Zhang remarked.

When Lady Zhang mentioned being slow-witted, she meant that the person was slow-thinking, somewhat dimwitted, or of low intelligence. Liulang was indeed quite slow, which was precisely why the Lian Family members didn’t mind speaking freely around him.

Lady Zhou had been appeased, and now that there was nobody else in the Upper Room, it presented a perfect opportunity.

After sending Liulang away, Lian Manman headed toward the Upper Room.

In the Upper Room East Room, Lady Zhou and Lian Xiuxiu were sitting on the kang, holding a piece of pink silk and discussing where to cut. Both had changed into clean clothes from head to toe and no longer looked disheveled as they had in the backyard.

However, the stench had left such a strong impression that, even though they had changed into clean garments, Lian Manman still felt the air smell foul when she saw the two of them.

"Grandmother, Aunt," Lian Manman greeted them with a smile.

When Lady Zhou and Lian Xiuxiu saw Lian Manman arrive, they just glanced at her and turned their heads back around, completely ignoring her. This was already an improvement, thanks to Lady Gu and Lady Chiang who had come earlier to persuade Lady Zhou and Lian Xiuxiu that they should not, under any circumstances, flare up at Lian Shouxin’s and Lian Shouli’s families again. Otherwise, Lady Zhou’s treatment of Lian Manman would have been more than simple disregard.

Lian Manman wasn’t upset. She continued to smile as she climbed onto the kang and sat down.

"This fabric is truly beautiful; it really suits my aunt," Lian Manman said from her seat on the kang.

Lian Xiuxiu glanced at Lian Manman again and snorted through her nose.

"Grandmother, following my uncle to his new post, you will become the official family’s old madam, and my aunt will be the official family’s young miss. That’s much better than us staying back in the village," Lian Manman said.

"Strong by a hundred suits" was a common saying in Thirty Mile Camp, meaning "strong by a hundredfold."

"It’s too late for you to be saying nice things now. Even if it’s strong by a hundred suits, strong by a thousand, we’re not taking you with us," Lian Xiuxiu retorted.
