Chapter 109: Ch 109: Artificial Soldiers - Part 1

Hearing the term artificial soldiers brought a sense of distaste to everyone’s mouths. But there was nothing they could do about it realistically. Everyone was too busy surviving to look after so many kids.

"Hey, there is another update here...the facility where the child soldiers were being kept got attacked by unknown forces? Did someone try to steal the kids for themselves?"

Clara asked as she read the news.

It was the first time something like this had happened ever since the system came and an order had been established. But with how much manpower the Peace Organization had, it was only a matter of time before those attackers were caught.

Andrew also decided to check the article for himself to know what more was said in it.

[We unfortunately regret to inform you that the Peace Organization’s headquarters was attacked by unknown forces. We are doing our best to find the cause behind this and bring them to justice. Please do not panic. Those who have become a part of our artificial soldier project, please do not worry. You will get your shipment soon.]

There was no humanity in those words. These people were treating the kids as a product to sell and gain profit.

Half of the replies looked relieved at this announcement, while the other half were calling out the inhuman words being used.

But no one disapproved of the project itself.

A few replies caught Andrew’s eye, and he immediately paid attention to them.

[Why don’t you tell the full truth? Here, this is the evidence left on the site.]

It was a photo with the phrase ’stop using children for your own amusement. They are not your toys’. But that was deleted mid-read for Andrew.

Someone was trying to censor the people and stop the panicking.

"Anyway, this is none of our business, so I will stop paying attention to it. My plants need me urgently, so I will head out now."

Clara spoke and grabbed Lilianna to drag her out for work. Lilianna protested but went along with Clara to keep her company.

Emperor followed them as well, leaving Seraphina and Andrew all alone in the room.

"Are you bothered by what happened? As far as I recall, you always had a soft spot for kids. Do human children hit the same soft spot for you?"

Andrew asked Seraphina, who had a complicated look on her face. She was looking at the system screen in front of her and bit her lip.

"I...just feel disgusted that humans can do this to children. As far as I am concerned, children need to be protected, not be used as weapons. Even we did not do anything like this, even when we were at our lowest."

The system had brought out the worst in everyone back home. People had lost all morals and other senses in a desperate need to survive.

Still, children had been one thing they had never touched until the end.

"Well, humans are not us, so we cannot hold them in the same regard. As for the children...since you are so worried, would you like to go and check up on them? That might put your mind at ease."

Andrew asked her, and Seraphina almost hesitated before she nodded.

"Yes, I would like to check on them."

She told Andrew with a confident face on the outside. But inside, guilt threatened to swallow her whole. Mainly because her desire to help the children out was not born out of her sense of duty, but the system’s mission.

[Secret mission unlocked: Collect the genetically modified humans and bring them to the system’s special operative. Humans’ cheating ways will not be tolerated.]

[Time limit: 1 day]

[Reward: System authority +1. Authority system will be unlocked.]

Seraphina felt sick as she realized that she had become just like the people she despised—the ones who used kids for their own benefit. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

But in her case, if she refused to do this, then the whole human race would suffer.

She followed Andrew out to the main building of the Peace Organization, where Thief and the others were already looking around. The atmosphere was tense, and Thief immediately headed toward him as soon as he noticed Andrew.

But Queen reached Andrew before he could, and her twisted expression spoke of her displeasure.

"What are you doing here? You and your kind are not welcomed here."

She spoke with anger and frustration lining her voice, but Thief’s hand on her shoulder calmed her down.

"Queen, it’s alright. Please head back to your working station for now. I will handle our guests."

He told her, and with a frustrated look, she headed back.

Thief looked relieved to see her go before he joined Andrew and Seraphina.

"I apologize for this mess. As you can tell, there has been an attack on our facility, and all of our kids have been kidnapped. We would appreciate it if you would be willing to extend your help to us."

Thief told them, and Andrew nodded.

"We will be glad to help. Do you have any idea who could be behind this?"

He asked, and Thief bit his lip before he answered.

"It was...a non-human. We caught his partner-in-crime and got him to spill the beans before the system killed him. Because of that, we found something important about these games."

Thief paused before he continued.

"Apparently, humans are not the only ones playing this game. Some of the system’s candidates have also slipped in here to play the game, but their objective is different from ours. These non-humans have been given missions to complete by the system and disrupt human progress. And their current objective is to make sure they get rid of the human soldiers."

Thief sounded angry as he spoke. He knew he should have seen it coming, but he had been too busy with other stuff to worry about it.

And as a result, these people from the system’s side had gained an advantage and managed to slip inside his people and cause this mess.
