Reborn as Mr.CEO's Fat Wife-Chapter 931: Want to Be More Honest Tonight
Chapter 931: Chapter 931: Want to Be More Honest Tonight
Bang! Bang! Bang!
As the clock struck midnight, a cascade of dazzling fireworks exploded across the night sky, illuminating half the city. Alfred Scott had already retreated to his room, unable to hold on any longer, leaving only Mary Scott and David Locke on the balcony.
Mary reclined comfortably in a lounge chair, gazing at the brilliant night sky. The last time she had the leisure to enjoy such a scene was six New Year’s Eves ago. After that, she had drifted from place to place, struggling daily to make ends meet. When she returned to the country, her life alternated between rushing from one gig to the next and juggling part-time jobs.
Even last New Year’s Eve, she spent it at a film set. Because extras were hard to recruit during the holidays, production crews would double their pay rates.
But as someone who had once been famous, Mary couldn’t afford to show her face even as an extra. Getting caught by Starlight would breach her contract, so she could only play corpses or roles where her face remained unseen. Earning three to four hundred a day was considered decent.
Never in her wildest dreams did Mary imagine that one year later, she would be sitting in a well-heated villa, ringing in the New Year beside David Locke.
Life brings troubles, but it also offers surprises.
Yet, no one knows what might lie behind those surprises.
Having endured so much hardship, Mary was no longer the innocent girl who once lived inside an ivory tower.
Tilting her head back to look at the sky, the twinkle of fireworks briefly reflected in her eyes before fading to an emptiness deep in her heart. Only when the final sparks of light disappeared into the darkness did she turn her head, meeting David’s gaze, which had been fixed on her.
Mary had already felt his gaze earlier. Now, facing it directly, she wasn’t flustered. She quietly looked at the face she had fallen for since her youth and softly murmured, "Happy New Year."
In previous years, she had only been able to mutter it to herself in the chill of the night. Tonight, however, she could say it to him directly. That made Mary feel happy.
David didn’t immediately respond. His deep brown eyes lingered on her quietly for a long time before he said in a low voice, "Happy New Year, Moll."
Mary couldn’t help but smile lightly. The next moment, David’s long arm suddenly extended, wrapping her entirely in his embrace. Her heart raced uncontrollably as she looked up at him. Even now, she didn’t fully understand the man he had become, even after he had professed his love for her that day.
Time is an enigmatic thing. It can heal pain, but it can also make one remember it. It can deepen love, or it can turn lovers into strangers. What were they now?
Calling it love felt pretentious. Claiming it wasn’t love felt untrue.
It seemed like an unresolved emotion—too painful to cut off completely, yet full of obstacles and uncertainties.
"What are you thinking about?" With his long arm around the woman he adored, David couldn’t decipher her thoughts. Looking at the complex emotions flashing in her eyes, he asked softly.
For the first time, Mary didn’t resist David’s closeness. Instead, she leaned into him further, letting his embrace become even more comfortable. Yet, she didn’t know how to answer his question. After a long pause, she finally murmured, "Thinking about you."
A faint chuckle escaped David’s lips. "So honest tonight?"
"They say if you’re happy on the first day of the New Year, you’ll be happy all year long. So, I thought I’d be a little more honest," Mary replied with a small smile. Though she was speaking the truth, it sounded as if she were playfully teasing him. She laughed after saying it.
David tightened his arms around her. "Then how about I wish you happiness every single day of the New Year?"
"Thank you," Mary said with a tilt of her head, smiling softly.
David reached out and pressed her head against his shoulder. "Sleepy?"
Mary shook her head. The atmosphere between them was rare and pleasant, and she didn’t want to sleep at all.
David lowered his gaze and could see her pale, delicate face leaning on his shoulder. Her long lashes fluttered like tiny brushes, tickling something deep in his chest and making him reluctant to let go. "When’s the second episode of ’Wilderness’ filming?"
"Third Day of the Lunar New Year, probably," Mary replied without looking up.
"Where’s the location?" David probed further.
Mary’s voice wavered. "No idea. For the sake of creating hype, the production team hasn’t told us. Who knows what kind of chaos they’re planning this time."
"Hmm. Then take me with you," David said, unconcerned about where Mary might be filming.
A sleepy Mary suddenly snapped her eyes open. "You’re coming along? No way. With your leg like this, how can you follow me?"
"Precisely because of my leg, I have to go. Or do you intend to leave me home alone on the Third Day of the Lunar New Year, starving to death?" David’s righteous tone concealed the unease lingering in his heart from a call earlier that morning.
Mary lifted her head to look at him. "Isn’t Alfred still at home? If it’s not possible, I can have Alfred take care of you. He’s actually quite self-sufficient."
David stayed silent, simply fixing her with a calm look as if to say, "Are you sure?"
Mary thought back to the time her brother and David had fought, recalling the hostility that Alfred occasionally displayed toward David. She shook her head at the idea of them getting along. But then, glancing at David’s injured leg, she hesitated. "But ’Wilderness’ is an adventure show. Who knows where we’ll go next? If we end up in a mountainous region on the Third Day, what happens if your leg gets hurt again?"
"Are you worried I’d hold you back?" David asked in an aloof tone.
"That’s not what I meant!" Mary quickly protested.
David, entirely composed, pressed her further. "If that’s not what you meant, then what did you mean?"
"I was just concer—" Mary cut herself off abruptly before saying "concerned." She didn’t want to inflate his ego unnecessarily.
"Hmm? Concerned about what?" David pursued the topic.
"Nothing. Are you sure you want to come? Even if I do go, the filming will only last two or three days. Isn’t it a bit much for you to travel back and forth for that?" Mary dodged him with a flustered reply—though it was truthful.
David seemed deep in thought for a moment. "Fine. I won’t go."
"Hmm?" Mary didn’t believe he’d give up so easily. She could hear the undertone in his voice, knowing that more was coming.
Sure enough, David paused briefly before calmly stating, "But on one condition."
Mary sighed internally, unsurprised by his terms. "You tell me the condition first, and I’ll consider it."
"Clear your March schedule and accompany me to the set." David’s straightforwardness cut through the night.
Mary froze. "Accompany you to the set?"
"If not, cover my lost wages," David teased mischievously after misinterpreting her hesitation as resistance.
Mary rolled her eyes at him and retorted, "Filming your project will probably take at least three months. Am I supposed to pause my career for that long?"
To others, three months might not seem long. But for a struggling actress in showbiz, three months away from work could mean losing opportunities, fading into obscurity, and possibly never landing a job again.
The entertainment industry was brutally unforgiving.
"Take a look at this," David said casually, releasing her and wheeling himself back into the living room. He grabbed a file from the coffee table and handed it to her.
