Chapter 600: Chapter 600: Ozia To N’bayé

Kael removed his eyes from the golden screen and focused his attention on his consort who had just entered the meeting room.

N’bayé looked around to see Kael, Ozia, and Memphis.

She narrowed her eyes into slits when she saw Memphis standing not too far away from Kael and her son.

She had expected it to just be Kael and Ozia here, so they could have a private chat.

Kael followed N’bayé’s gaze to see that she was staring intently at Memphis who was also looking at her.

Ozia was also looking at her like she was someone he had been trying to avoid for a long time now.

N’bayé came closer to them, "Greetings," She said to Memphis, "Can you excuse us, I’d like to have a private discussion with them."

N’bayé was blunt and spoke with no emotion on her face. She didn’t have the time to guess around the strange things going on in Memphis’s mind.

The appreciation for the time bubble Memphis had helped them with would disappear if Memphis continued to interfere in some things.

Memphis was astounded at first. She had been close to Kael when he had talked about a lot of sensitive topics. She easily played an advisory role for Kael these days since she actually had a lot of experience.

That N’bayé was requesting that she leave didn’t make her angry, she was just wondering how sensitive the topic was.

She had been lecturing Ozia before now and when Ozia told her that Kael was summoning them, she had insisted on coming.

Memphis just felt that there wasn’t really a dull time when around Kael, even when he was just quiet and sitting on his pillow sofa the way he was doing right.

There was something about Kael being calm and composed that made others feel like a storm was brewing.

Memphis wasn’t honest with herself about the real reason she was here.

But since N’bayé wanted some privacy, she would leave. Before taking any step forward, Memphis turned to look at Kael.

Kael nodded at her, his eyes flashing with a strange golden gaze as he looked at Memphis. He had some thoughts but didn’t want to think too much about it.

With her arms put together, her green eyes dazed under the experience of countless years, and her blonde hair pulled to her back, she walked out of the meeting room.

"Uhm, Mentor, I’ll come with you," Ozia quickly chummed in and followed after her.

"Enough boy," Kael raised his voice slightly, halting Ozia in his steps.

Ozia didn’t dare to take one more step forward.

Memphis looked back, throwing a glance of pity Ozia’s way before quickly leaving.

Ozia was left in the meeting room with his parents.

"Your mother requested that I make you come here. According to her, you’ve been avoiding her ever since you became Memphis’s mentee.

What’s the matter?"

Kael asked as he reclined on his pillow sofa.

N’bayé observed and confirmed that Memphis was gone. The door to the meeting room sealed shut, preventing any potential future intruders.

She turned back to look at her son who was now taller than her.

Ozia stood there in silence, looking down with an indifferent expression.

"I didn’t see the need, Father," Ozia said.

"Hmm."

N’bayé walked, coming closer to Ozia who visibly leaned away but didn’t move his feet.

"You didn’t see the need to speak to your mother?" N’bayé asked.

Hearing this, not just Ozia, but even Kael looked at N’bayé strangely. Perhaps it was true that N’bayé was genuinely unaware of the effects of her behavior in Ozia’s life.

She spoke like she hadn’t neglected her child for most of his life.

"Why didn’t you see any reason?" Kael asked, stepping in to make the conversation more comfortable for his son.

"She never saw any reason to talk to me," Ozia answered sharply.

Two runes kit up in his eyes as he began to take a more technical stance rather than the flinching stance he had before. Since he was here, he might as well say what was on his mind.

Ozia would not fear anyone who wasn’t his father.

Kael turned to N’bayé. Both Ozia and N’bayé were now standing in front of him on his left and right sides respectively.

"You never saw any reason to talk to him, N’bayé. He’s reciprocating your actions," Kael said.

N’bayé took a deep breath, "I know," N’bayé admitted. "And I have realized that you have been greatly vexed by my method of bringing you up..." 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"Bringing me up?" Ozia scoffed and folded his hands, "Memphis has spent more time being a mother to me than you have ever done in my entire life."

*Silence!*

The glow in N’bayé’s eyes suddenly intensified as her aura rose sharply. Then it doused down as logic took over immediately.

"I see," She said, choosing not to be offended. However, Memphis now had a new position in her mind.

Ozia continued, "You never even taught me how to do the most basic things.

Hunting and fighting? I learned that from Auntie Diane and Katari.

Basic survival tips and psychological study? Auntie Nalii and Priya were there for that one.

Those secret times when I had no one to turn to, those times when I would look around and see all my siblings with their own mothers but I would be alone.

During those times, I had no aunties to replace you. All I had was myself and my pride.

And as you can see, I survived, and I’m thriving..." Ozia stretched out his hand to show his body to imply that he was doing very fine.

"So, if your presence was irrelevant to my survival then, why should I care about your presence now?

I have to protect my mental health."

There was another round of silence as N’bayé and Kael looked at their son.

He had grown, indeed.

N’bayé digested the words. She didn’t dismiss Ozia’s complaint or declaration. Instead, she decided to use this as a template to decide how to treat her second child, Ozia’s younger brother.

"Have you seen your brother?" N’bayé asked solemnly.

Ozia’s expression softened, "No," He admitted.

"You should see him one of these days," N’bayé suggested, "He looks just like you."

N’bayé had her reasons for saying this. She wasn’t like the other lionesses, her curiosity was what moved her to do things, not hunger or motherhood instincts.

Depending on the context, this was both a strength and a weakness.

N’bayé was painfully aware of the flawed parts.

She couldn’t change herself for anyone. She could adjust, but she couldn’t change at all.

And she was also aware that this mentality might affect her second child. It wasn’t like she wouldn’t be a good mother if she could, she just couldn’t.

Once she realized that the reality of motherhood for a lion was to raise cubs just so that they leave your side eventually, she would just see it as a waste of time.

But if she could somehow nudge Ozia into being present for his little brother, it may turn out just fine.

Ozia knew what it was like to be neglected and to be betrayed. He would know how a child would feel in these circumstances and would adjust his behavior well.

Ozia was the perfect person to take care of his brother.

Within a second, Kael knew what N’bayé wanted to do but he didn’t protest against it.

Yes, N’bayé was a bad mother, but he needed her curiosity more than the children needed her presence.

He didn’t mind if she was a bad mother if it benefited him greatly in the process.

Ozia had not yet caught on to N’bayé’s harmless scheme and intentions but he had already made a mental note to visit his little brother one of these days.

"What exactly was the reason you wanted to see Ozia, did you want to tell him something?" Kael asked.

N’bayé shook her head, "Not really. I just wanted to take a closer look at the Gauntlet which is a godly artifact."

Saying this, her eyes fell to look at the black glassy metallic arm on Ozia’s left.

"I looked into some records dating back to the era of Jin the Purger and I realized that no one ever had the opportunity to study this artifact.

From the very first moment it appeared, Jin used it for combat. When he died, he hid it away.

There was no room for any great minds to study it and in guessing some were discouraged by the artifact’s godly status.

But, I was thinking. Even if I personally or the lions in general don’t have the thought pattern needed to decipher this artifact, the monkeys definitely do."

Kael’s eyes lit up in wonder. He liked the direction N’bayé was thinking in, he liked it very much.

Weren’t the Monkeys thought of to be so wise and intelligent that they had created many technological wonders?

"What a coincidence," Kael said as he sat up with a smile, "I was just about to make a trip to see Marcus and the rest."
