Chapter 48: Chapter 48 – Adam Shadowend vs Kael Duskrin (Part 2)

They collided once more at the center of the field with force, their fists connecting simultaneously against each other’s faces with a wet sound that made several spectators shudder.

Adam felt his head snap violently to the side as Kael staggered back, both of them spitting blood onto the ground before regaining their balance and launching at each other again.

Kael landed a rapid series of blows to Adam’s torso: left to the ribs, right to the liver, another left higher up.

Adam blocked the last one with his forearm but felt the impact resonate through his entire arm as he countered with a hook that Kael dodged by leaning back.

Then Kael did something Adam didn’t expect.

He dropped low and swept Adam’s legs from a low angle he couldn’t anticipate, sending him crashing onto his back against the ground.

Before he could react, Kael was already on top of him with his fist raised.

The punch descended straight toward his face.

Adam turned his head at the last second and Kael’s fist slammed into the ground beside his ear with enough force to crack the surface.

He took advantage of that moment to drive an upward elbow into Kael’s jaw that knocked him back just enough for Adam to roll to the side and get to his feet.

"Shit," he muttered as he spat more blood, feeling one of his ribs protest with every breath. Probably fractured.

Kael stood up, wiping the blood from his mouth, a small smile still present. "I almost had you."

"Almost. But you didn’t."

Adam lunged forward, ignoring the pain in his side, driving a palm strike directly into Kael’s sternum that forced him back, gasping, before he countered with a brutal hook that connected perfectly with the side of Adam’s head.

Causing the whole world to blur for a second.

Adam staggered to the side as his vision filled with haze, barely managing to raise his arms in time to block the kick Kael launched at his head.

Even so, the impact drove him back several steps.

"What the hell is he doing?" Ansel Stone muttered from the stands, watching his classmate—Kael—fight with a brutality he had never shown in class. "He’s going to get himself killed..."

"They’re both going to kill each other," someone beside him replied tensely.

In another section of the stands, Alice watched the fight with genuine interest. "Now this is fun."

Valeria Ashcroft stood with her arms crossed, watching with a neutral expression, though her eyes never left Adam. She said nothing.

Sophia Stormcrown had leaned forward in her seat, completely captivated by the brutal exchange unfolding before her.

On the battlefield, Adam landed an uppercut that lifted Kael off the ground momentarily.

Kael landed and without pausing countered with a brutal combination: a hook to the liver immediately followed by a knee to the face when Adam doubled over from the pain of the first blow.

The sound of bone breaking echoed audibly.

Adam’s nose exploded in blood as his head snapped back from the force of the impact, more of his teeth flying out as he fell to his knees on the ground.

"Adam!" Piers shouted from the stands, jumping to his feet abruptly.

Evelyne had her hands covering her mouth, unable to look away from the horror she was witnessing.

Kael approached slowly while Adam remained on his knees spitting blood, clearly preparing to finish the fight.

He raised his fist for the final blow.

Adam saw it coming in slow motion.

And smiled through his bloodied mouth.

When the fist came down, Adam lunged forward instead of back, closing the distance completely as the punch passed over his head.

He drove a brutal strike directly into Kael’s ribs.

CRACK.

The sound of bone breaking was unmistakable this time.

Kael gasped as he staggered back, clutching his side, clearly feeling the fractured rib.

But he didn’t stop.

He countered immediately with an elbow that connected with Adam’s face, sending him stumbling backward.

They both stood there for a second, breathing heavily as blood dripped steadily from multiple wounds.

Adam spat more blood before speaking in a hoarse voice. "I’m still... not done."

"Me... neither."

They threw themselves at each other again despite their shattered bodies.

Their fists collided constantly, each impact sending waves of pain through their systems, but neither stopping.

Adam landed a punch that split Kael’s eyebrow wide open.

Kael answered with a hook that partially dislocated Adam’s jaw.

Adam snapped it back into place with a sharp movement that made several spectators visibly flinch before countering with an elbow that broke Kael’s nose.

Blood ran freely from both of them now, staining the ground and creating slick puddles beneath their feet.

"Stop them," one of the professors muttered from the elevated boxes. "They’re going to kill each other."

But Director Acelina raised her hand, stopping him. "No. They both chose this."

Adam landed a brutal kick to Kael’s already fractured ribs that made him double over with a choked cry of pain.

He seized that moment to grab him by the neck and slam him into the ground with all the strength he had left.

Kael hit the ground with a dull thud before Adam dropped on top of him, driving direct punches into his face again and again.

Left. Right. Left. Right.

Each blow splattering more and more blood.

But then Kael managed to block one of the punches and used the momentum to roll, reversing their positions and ending up on top.

He drove a brutal punch into Adam’s face that made his head bounce against the ground.

Another punch.

And another.

Adam’s vision turned completely red from the blood pouring from multiple wounds on his face.

’Shit,’ he thought as he desperately tried to block the blows that kept coming. Remembering a dirty technique from his past life, he stopped defending and instead drove his thumbs directly into Kael’s eyes.

Kael screamed as he instinctively jerked back, his hands flying to his face.

Adam used that second of advantage to slam his forehead forward in a brutal headbutt that left them both dazed, but gave him the space he needed to shove Kael aside and climb on top.

Now he had control again.

He grabbed Kael by the throat with both hands and began to squeeze while driving his knees into his torso with brutal force.

Kael tried to break free, his hands striking Adam’s face repeatedly, but without enough strength to make him release his grip.

Adam squeezed harder, feeling Kael’s trachea beneath his fingers as he continued driving his knees into his already fractured ribs.

Kael’s eyes began to lose focus.

Then something changed in his expression.

There was no resistance left. Only... acceptance.

A small smile appeared on his bloodied face as he looked directly at Adam.

"Good... fight..." he managed to murmur despite the pressure on his throat.

Adam looked at him for a second, recognizing that expression.

Respect between warriors.

He squeezed harder.

Kael’s body gradually stopped resisting, his arms falling to his sides as life slowly left his eyes.

Adam maintained his grip for several seconds more, making sure.

Then he let go.

Kael fell to the ground completely motionless, his gray eyes staring at the sky without seeing anything.

Dead.

Absolute silence fell over the coliseum.

Adam remained kneeling there beside the body for a moment, breathing heavily as blood dripped from his countless wounds.

Then, slowly, he rose unsteadily to his feet.

He looked toward the stands where everyone was watching him with expressions of horror, shock, fascination.

And smiled with that ruined mouth.

"Winner..." Director Acelina began, her voice tense, "Adam Shadowend."

The applause was scattered and uncomfortable, no one really sure how to react to what they had just witnessed.

Adam took one step toward the field gates.

Then another.

On the third step, his legs gave out and he fell to his knees on the ground.

Nox began using healing magic on the most serious wounds, but only enough to stop the bleeding so no one would suspect.

But Adam barely noticed. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

The only thing he could think was that he had won.

He killed Kael Duskrin.

He completed the system’s mission.

And now his entire body hurt too much to even celebrate.

’It was worth it,’ he thought before his consciousness began to slowly fade. ’Barely.’

The last thing he saw before everything went black was several professors running toward him while Nox continued healing him desperately.

Then nothing.
