Chapter 36: Shocking Truth

Immediately, Nathan pulled away from the kiss. Fiona was starstruck. She looked at him with confusing thoughts. ’Was he playing her? Or did he like her?’ Everything didn’t feel real, and she knew she was in love with him, so the sooner he stopped his charade of affection, the better it was for her.

"Nathan..." She tried to speak, but Nathan’s hand slid across her lips, silencing her. She looked at him with love but quickly stopped herself. This man was making things harder for her! They didn’t have to pretend when no one was around, so why did he kiss her? Why bring her here?

As she was about to turn away, Nathan’s wrist caught hers. "I need to tell you something," he said, still grabbing her wrist.

"Nathan, don’t... I can’t do this," she said, not facing him because her eyes were already teary.

"I don’t understand, Fiona... what can’t you do?" His voice ached with a bit of pain or something. ’Did she know he had developed feelings for her?’

She wiped her eyes with her other palm, facing him. "I can’t keep doing this! Pretending... you kissing me out of nowhere, caring for me, looking at me with those eyes..." She paused. "You’ll just keep messing with my head."

Their eyes were locked now, saying nothing. Nathan’s lips curved in a smile. "Funny how you do all these to me..."

"What?" She said almost in a whisper, clearly not expecting that kind of response.

"I’m... I’m in love with you, Fiona Brown. You drive me crazy in the most insane way. You look at me with those eyes, and my heart literally melts. I can’t stay a day without thinking about you. I’m sleepless at night because of you. I love you."

Fiona just stood there in shock. Did he seriously just say those words to her?! Nathan Keith loved her?! Nathan’s expression became uncertain; she wasn’t saying anything, just stayed mute.

"Fiona, say something."

Fiona’s lips parted, but no words came out. Nathan had just literally made her speechless. "Fiona, I mean every word I said. I’ve never felt this way about anybody else."

"Not even Natasha?" She asked, looking away, and he smiled.

"Not even her, cupcake."

Fiona looked up at him, and for the first time in a long while, her heart raced like it would pop out of her chest. She stood on her tiptoes, crushing her lips against his. He reciprocated, deepening the kiss.

Back at the hotel, Nathan and Fiona both stared at each other, each reluctant to move first. "I guess it’s goodnight then," Nathan spoke, staring at her. Fiona nodded nervously; she still wasn’t used to this whole closeness stuff that was for real.

As she was about to go, he held her back, and she was trapped between his arms. Her heart raced; she wasn’t used to this new Nathan. "Goodnight, cupcake," he whispered in her ear, pressing the elevator door button.

She only walked fast to Ella’s room. As soon as she opened the door, she found Ella sitting on the bed. "Girl, where were you for over 3 hours?" She saw the tension on Fiona’s face; her face was clearly flushed.

"Oh.. Tell me what happened? Gist me," she pestered.

Fiona fell on the bed like a dreamy girl. "Oh, Ella, he kissed me..." she started. "He actually confessed how much he loves me." She said dreamily, staring at the ceiling.

"Oh, Fiona, get a grip! He’s your boyfriend already... don’t try and make me jealous," Ella rolled her eyes at her, clearly teasing her.

The next morning, everyone was all packed as they returned home. Fiona fell asleep on Nathan’s shoulder, and he adjusted her head well on him so she could be comfortable. Two cars were already waiting at the airport, one was meant for Nathan and Fiona and the other for Ella.

Ella hugged Fiona and thanked Nathan, who only nodded before leaving. The drive home was quiet and a bit tense. "I didn’t know you could be so nervous since I asked you out," he teased, and she looked at him.

"I’m being careful," she said. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

"Careful? Of what?" He asked.

"Of my heart, I don’t want you hurting me; pretense and reality are two different things." She looked out at the windows, watching the cars and city.

"I give you my word, Fiona. I would never hurt you."

Back at home, everyone welcomed them back. Nathan didn’t stay, though; he headed for the office immediately for urgent work. Though Fiona noticed how weirdly everyone acted, as if they were trying to cover something up, she couldn’t pin what it was; even Natasha was acting a little bit too calm.

After dinner, she went to Nathan’s room; he sat down on his bed with his laptop, so she sat on his sofa. "Is it just me, or is your whole family acting weird?" Nathan, whose eyes were fixed on his work, simply dismissed it.

"My entire family are weirdos," he joked.

"No, Nathan, it’s different. There’s definitely something going on."

"Maybe you’re just overwhelmed, my love." "What?" Nathan paused, realizing he had actually started acting hopelessly romantic.

"No more cupcake?" She teased.

"You’re everything." He smiled at her.

The next morning, Fiona prepared for school, and Nathan was ready for work. As they were heading out, his mother stopped them. "Nathan," she called, and they both stopped.

"Yes, Mother."

"I need to speak with you for a sec, please," she said.

"Mom, we can talk about it over the phone," Nathan said.

"No, darling, it can’t wait." Fiona stared at them; now she was sure something was wrong.

"Fiona will be late for class," Nathan persisted, but Caleb interfered. "Let me drop her off. I’ve always wanted to meet her friend." Nathan glanced back at Fiona as if asking for permission.

"Don’t worry, Nathan, go ahead," she said, and Caleb escorted her out.

"Mom, whatever you want to say better be important," Nathan said.

"You have a child, Nathan." She dropped the bombshell. "What?"
