Restart:Untalented Man-Chapter 488: Offer
Percival exchanged a look with Sarika. "The king's residence?"
This is very unexpected for both of them. Previously, they were under the assumption that the meeting would held at the office.
Not that they have a problem with it. Many nobles had their office inside their residence to safeguard confidential documents.
To their knowledge, the King of Ryntum was famous for completely separating his work from his private life.
Since the government complex was built, no one ever saw him bringing his work back home.
"I wasn't expecting to visit the king's home," she murmured.
"Neither was I," Percival replied.
The carriage continued its climb. The city's noise gradually faded away but the cityscape kept expanding.
Both Percival and Sarika were dumbfounded to see the magnificent view of the city.
Here, the atmosphere changed from the bustling urban landscape to a calming rural-like setting. The air became cooler and the scent of greenery got stronger.
On both sides of the road, tall trees lined up. Their presence beautifies the area while acting as a natural barrier from the outside world.
Finally, the carriage came to a stop in front of a grand residence that oversees the entire city.
The doors bore the royal emblem. It was clear that they had arrived at their destination.
Sarika and Percival stepped out of the carriage.
They took a moment to look at their surroundings.
The mansion was not as big as Blueriver Palace but its breathtaking view compensated for its size.
In front of the door stood an elderly man waiting for them.
He wore a black suit, meticulously combed grey hair and stood straight in his posture.
Overall, he looks dignified.
"Welcome to His Majesty's residence, Lord Percival and Lady Sarika," the butler said, "I am Edward, the butler of this mansion. It is an honour to receive you."
Percival gave a polite nod, "Thank you, Edward. We appreciate the hospitality. You can just call me by my name. I'm no longer a noble."
The butler's expression remained neutral, "I'm afraid I cannot do that. Certain formalities must be done, regardless of one's current status."
With a graceful gesture, Edward pointed towards the entrance. "His Majesty is expecting you. I shall escort you to the drawing room, where you may await his arrival."
As they stepped inside the mansion, the fragrance of fresh flowers wafted through the air.
The scent was likely carried from the lush gardens around the mansion.
The interior looks elegant but the two of them feel something lacking.
Edward noticed their subtle reactions. "You must be thinking there are few things in this place."
Sarika replied, "Yes, it does feel… sparse."
"That is because His Majesty threw away many items he deemed useless. He freed up space from excess and clutter. He is a person who values simplicity over extravagance."
"Interesting. Not one I'd expect from royalty. Most rulers I've met tend to indulge themselves to showcase their wealth and power."
They eventually reached the doors of the drawing room.
Edward turned to face them. "Please make yourselves comfortable. His Majesty will join you shortly."
In the meantime, a pair of maids entered. They placed a silver tray with tea and pastries on the table.
They waited for like twenty minutes before the door was opened again.
Percival and Sarika both turned their heads. A young man stepped into the room.
'So young!'
His youthful appearance was something they had expected. But, seeing him in person was still surprising.
Riz was unfazed by their gaze. He walked and took a seat across from them.
"I suppose I don't have to introduce myself," he said. "Or maybe I should...There's no photograph here. You don't know my exact face. Anyone can impersonate me."
The young king muttered certain words that neither Percival nor Sarika could fully understand.
Nevertheless, both the father and daughter didn't press about it either.
Percival was quick to take this opportunity to greet the king first.
"Your Majesty, it is an honour to meet you in person. We appreciate the opportunity to speak with you directly."
The king's eyes flickered toward Percival with interest.
"The honour is mine, Percival Klover. It's not every day that I meet with someone who has recently arrived in my kingdom under such... interesting circumstances."
It was clear to Percival that Riz knew a lot about them.
Riz then looked at Sarika, "It's nice to meet you again, Commander Sarika Klover. Last time, you really put us in a pinch."
Sarika reluctantly put on a smile. Looks like the king had not forgotten the time when she nearly attacked his capital.
Sensing his daughter's discomfort, Percival quickly stepped in to steer the conversation away from her.
"Your Majesty, may I know why you call us here?"
Riz's eyes flicked back to Percival. He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he let the silence linger for a while.
"May I know the purpose of the former duke and his daughter in coming here?"
"We seek a fresh start. The situation in Klover has changed, and it is not favourable to us. We came here to rebuild our lives away from their influence."
"A fresh start, huh? Many people say the same thing but end up not doing that. You won't believe how many people we arrested."
The two guests begin to look uncomfortable.
"We have no intention of causing trouble, Your Majesty."
"Oh, don't panic. I'm not pointing fingers at you."
Riz couldn't tell them that he was to blame for their misfortune.
"I understand that you don't have a choice but to be here. It just... a waste of your talent."
"Our talent?"
"Yes. It's hurtful to see a former duke and a skilled commander reduced to living a life far from their expertise. It reminds me of the past. So, I'm going to make an offer."
"An offer?" they exclaimed.
"I have a job that I believe is suitable for both of you. Would you like to give it a try?"
