Chapter 728: Chapter 728. The Hero of Echos

Amon looted Huang San’s space ring and took the king’s head and body. He then went back to check his tamed beasts.

Lin Li was still lying on the ground. Half its fur was charcoal. She tried to stand on her four legs when she saw Amon approaching. Her legs were shaking. A whine escaped her mouth. She couldn’t speak when she was in her fox form.

"Lie down. No need to stand," Amon told her. He checked her wounds. The wounds were pretty severe, but her life was not in danger.

Amon took out a small bottle and poured the liquid inside on her burned body. She yelped in pain but didn’t move away. He took a different bottle and fed its contents to her. Both bottles were recovery potions specialized for tamed beasts.

"You have done well. Return home now. Drink the water from the lake and consume the Primordial Blue Lotus’ nectar. It will help you heal faster."

Lin Li nodded weakly.

After returning Lin Li to the Black Space Ring, Amon went to the Great Sun Hawk next. It was also lying weakly on the ground. Blood leaked from its many punctured wounds. The hawk’s injury was worse, but it should live if it received treatment.

Amon applied the same recovery potions and sent the hawk back in his Black Space Ring with the same instructions as Lin Li.

Finishing that, he left the cave. Echos’ soldiers might find this cave, and he didn’t want to be here when it happened. Outside, he placed Huang San’s remains in a conspicuous location. He left and sent the location to Xin Wuming.

Xin Wuming, who was still with Echos’ other Spirit Stage soldiers, had regrouped with the Mystic Stage soldiers who went with Huang San. They eradicated the enemy tamed beasts before looking for Huang San. Liu Xun and Yong Baili had been berating the surviving Mystic Stage soldiers for losing their king. They decided to split into two groups. Xin Wuming followed Yong Baili’s group.

After receiving Amon’s info, Xin Wuming hinted vaguely that he saw someone suspicious in the direction Amon indicated. Going that way, they found what they were looking for, although not in the condition they had hoped for. Grief and shock overtook the group. Some wailed at the sight. Some stormed around the place in anger, trying to find the perpetrators. Most froze in silence.

While that took place, Amon wasn’t done with his plan. He met the Kazhan and Khode troops that were part of the First Demon Army. These were the troops who parted ways with their Echos brethren. After parting ways, they didn’t return to their home countries. They met with Amon, who everyone thought had died. Xin Wuming, submitting himself to the Echos Army, was part of Amon’s plan.

He then met with Lin Xiaolong, who had led his clansmen and some loyal followers from Khode to come in secret to Oredolia. Lin Xiaolong and his people followed Amon’s plan and intercepted Huang San’s force during their journey home.

Lin Xiaolong did bring battle puppets from Khode, but the bulk of his puppet army was actually Amon’s demon puppet army. Amon lent him half of his puppet army and the Yuanxu Cannons to ambush the Echos Army. The ambush strategy, of course, came from Amon. Even the tamed beasts who assaulted Huang San’s protective detail on the other side of the river were Kazhan Soldiers’ pets, who were part of the First Demon Army.

Now that Amon had achieved his objective, he didn’t need the battle to continue. He brought the remnants of his First Demon Army, supported by the other half of his puppet army, and came to the rescue of the retreating Echos Army.

Lin Xiaolong, who saw Amon’s arrival, acted like he had trouble coping with the sudden rescue and retreated. Amon’s arrival, which drove back Lin Xiaolong’s force, made him appear like a hero in the eyes of the Echos Soldiers, especially those who used to serve in the First Demon Army. They all cheered for him.

The cheerful celebration soon turned into anguish and sorrow when Yong Baili and the others returned with the news of Huang San’s demise. Many cried and cursed at Khode, for Lin Xiaolong was a member of Khode’s high council. This transgression was an act of war. They swore they would get their revenge on Khode.

Amon took over control and told everyone to calm down. The first order of business was to return to Echos and bring the king’s remains back to the capital. The king must be given a formal burial. After the period of peace, Amon swore he would make Khode answer for this incident.

Some high-ranking officers, such as Liu Xun, were discontent with Amon acting like the army commander. Yet, they were dumbfounded to discover that they were the minority. Many responded to Amon as if it were the natural thing to do.

One of the reasons was that Amon was a general. His rank in the military was second only to Jiang Tong. Jiang Tong, however, was still recovering inside the patient wagon. There were a few other generals in the army, but they could not challenge Amon.

This was due to another reason why most soldiers looked up to Amon. Amon’s fame and achievements were something no other general could compare to. He had defeated Khode, he had defeated Kazhan, and he did that with only a handful of starting troops. He had even slain a Lord Stage cultivator while still at the Spirit Stage. Most soldiers considered Amon a living legend.

If those high-ranking officers tried to challenge Amon’s authority in public, after he saved them by driving back the enemy, it would be themselves who would get embarrassed. Hence, they remained silent as Amon took the reins of the entire army and ordered everyone to return to Echos.

So, the Echos Army returned to Echos, carrying the bodies of their two previous kings, and with Amon at the helm.

---------------

When Amon led his force to save the Echos Army, a group of people entered the cave where Huang San had been assassinated.

This group consisted of people who wore cloth masks and white robes that covered their entire bodies. They surveyed the cave that showed signs of a battle.

"Miss, we are too late," one of the robed people said to one of them who appeared to be the leader.

"That man truly acts fast. I have known he would be a pain in the ass even when he was still fifteen years old," the leader remarked. "Never mind. It is a pity we failed to save the Echos King and ruined that man’s plan, but we already know his secret. All we need to do is pick the right timing to expose him. If everything goes according to my plan, that time will be soon."

"We can’t fail! If we let such an evil person gain power, our world be plunged into a miserable abyss."

"I have no objection to that. Come on. There is no point for us to linger here."

When they wanted to leave, they found that one of them remained in his place. He was standing before the cave’s end, which consisted of rubble. This rubble seemed to have formed just recently.

"Hey, Xiong! What are you doing? We are leaving!"

The man who stood before the rubble replied, "Wait! I sensed someone inside here. His lifeforce is extremely weak, but he is still alive."

"Are you sure you did not just imagine it?" His friend asked. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Their leader took the claim more seriously. "Xiong has a special constitution that allows him to detect someone’s presence even if the person’s aura is concealed. If he says there is someone inside that rubble, then there is. Help him dig that person out."

"Is Miss sure Miss want us to do that? We don’t know who that person is?"

"We don’t, but this person sure knows what happened inside this cave more than we do. If he is on our side, he can help us bring the other parties along and thus accelerate our plan to take down that demon general."

"All right, everyone. The miss has spoken. Get to work!"

The robed group started moving the rocks that formed the rubble. They did it carefully so they didn’t trigger further cave-in, which would extend what they were trying to do even longer.

Thankfully, their leader was a perceptive and knowledgeable person. She studied the rubble and told them which rock to move first. It was painstaking work, but after several hours, they managed to clear enough rocks to see their target.

"I will be damned," the leader uttered.

"Miss, do you know this man?"

"I do. Get him out of there. This man is without a doubt on our side. From the look of it, he had a direct clash with that demon general. For him to survive the fight, his insight will be invaluable to us."

"His vital signs are extremely weak. I am surprised he has not died yet. The only thing keeping him alive is his will to live. He can expire any second now."

"Then hurry up and save him!" The leader ordered. "We can’t lose this man!"
