Sacred Flame: His Enemy, His Mate (BL)-Chapter 27: Deathbringer
Kain Locke
"Get yourself suited up and pick the suitable weapons. No one will save your ass out there." Mateo, who I guess was the team leader, said as we chose our weapon from the armory.
I picked a shotgun, and a laser one that can tear through anything.
Tucking one in my waist band, the other was tucked behind me. Then I took several bullet magazines, and just for safety sake, I picked out two daggers and put them in their hilt first, before tucking them in the belt around my thigh.
After we’re done picking out weapons we walked out of the new base to the open space outside where a car was packed.
"Whoa... TxL 789." One of the team members, a beta, whistled as he rushed to touch the sleek body of the car, turning his head back at us, "This is definitely going to be a wild ride."
TxL is one of the fastest cars, so it’s pretty normal he has that kind of reaction.
We got into the car soon after and I took a seat in the corner, my heart racing slightly, I don’t know if it was due to the very existence of Mateo in the same car with me, or because of this mission.
Nevertheless, I got the mission I knew nothing about done, and returned safely to the base because? I can’t simply risk dying out there.
That’s if I don’t die in an accident first because the beta examining the car earlier was one crazy rider. I can tell just how insane he is the way he’s overtaking several cars and blaring the horn loudly.
We drove for over an hour, and the car eventually pulled over in front of an enclosed land with an electric fence.
My face scrunched up with a cloud of frowns as recognition dawned on me.
This place, this very place, I’ve been here before and not just here, but beyond that fence.
After all, that day marked my first mission a death pool, not because the people we are coming to meet are notorious or anything, but are notwithstanding formidable due to the fact that they were equipped and hid so well in a facility built with strong metal doors and walls, for the reason that this whole surrounding was habituated by beasts, snake beast that will swirl out of the surrounding water and hatched out of their eggs, only for one purpose, to attack and kill.
"We can’t go in there, I don’t know what this mission is, but we definitely can’t step inside that fence!" I snapped out of my thoughts and warned just as they were shutting the car doors, preparing to step through the gate which was left ajar.
"Hey! What is your problem Omega! This isn’t your call remember? Mateo is the leader so you don’t get to command anyone here or I’m gonna fucking break your head, no one would even care because we’re on a ’mission’" The other beta sneered in protest..
But I wasn’t just giving up, "I’m being serious here, we’re all going to die if we stepped inside of this place. Think about it, why would one of the biggest weapon developing institutes open their gates like this even though the wall is an electric fence that will zap life out of any individual who dared touch it in less than a second?"
The beta who drove the car shot me a glare. " You’re just scared, and honestly, I don’t blame you. But you have to get this straight, we’re here to do a job, and I won’t let your whining ruin it."
I opened my mouth to argue, but the other beta shoved me forward. "Move it. We don’t have all day."
I hesitated, my heart racing as I looked at the open gate. It was too easy, like a bait set out for prey, it is. But they weren’t listening.
Not to say Mateo was already moving ahead, the others were also following blindly without any hesitation,
Leaving me with no choice. If I tried to run, they’d drag me back or worse, leave me out here alone.
Swallowing hard, I glanced back at the car, wishing I could just jump in and drive off. But it was pointless. They had the keys. Thus, I was stuck.
We walked deeper into the compound, and even though the pool was far from here, I could hear the faint sound of ripples nearby, probably that same murky pool where those beasts nested.
I tried not to think about it, but the memory of their scales and sharp teeth flashed through my mind, making my stomach churn.
Mateo led us toward the main building.
Even as we walked, I could almost hear the echo of screams, the cries of those who never made it out, making my fists clenched at my sides, but I kept walking, my feet moving on autopilot.
We finally stopped in front of the doors, "Stay alert. This shouldn’t take long." Mateo ordered, checking his gear.
And at this instance, I don’t care if they’re going to listen to me or not, but if we’re going in, it wouldn’t be through the front door because that’s going to put us in a more tight situation.
We made the same mistake back then when we had our first mission, I was fifteen, maybe the oldest among the rest, we were little, holding the guns with shaky hands but with fire in our eyes, we were determined, not because we want to win for that man, but because we want to keep our lives.
I wasn’t very much bothered about whatever prejudice my teammates abhorred against me now, but they had to know how dangerous this place was, not only was it my first of everything, first kill, also the very place that shaped me into the emotionless killing machine I was, because I realized too late that it was no mission to survive but a sacrifice.
No one was expected to emerge victorious.
And they succeeded because out of all the people sent to retrieve that formula for making one of the most dangerous nuclear weapons then, only I came stumbling out of that gate with the secret formula drenched in blood.
That day gave me a name, and that name is Deathbringer.
So I knew this place more than any of them, and it’s more alarming right now because we’re walking right into our death.
