Sacred Flame: His Enemy, His Mate (BL)-Chapter 37: Liar
Kain Locke
I wasn’t sure what pissed me off more, the fact that I failed or the fact that Kael was now teamed with me.
No, scratch that. It was definitely Kael.
I slammed the door to my room shut, barely making it to the bed before collapsing onto it. My body ached all over, exhaustion settling deep in my bones. I turned onto my side, staring at the ceiling, but sleep didn’t come. My mind was too wired, too full of things I didn’t want to think about.
So with a sigh, I reached for the drawer beside the bed with little hope, but surprisingly my communicator was there. I brought it out and turned it on, and went to the gallery, and started flipping through the photos stopping on one.
Brian’s smile flashed on the screen, small hands gripping Felix’s sleeve as they stood in front of the kindergarten gates. That day felt like a lifetime ago. Even though it was just about two months ago. Felix had ruffled Brian’s hair, making some joke about him scaring the other kids away if he didn’t behave. Brian had laughed, bright and carefree.
I swallowed, my fingers hovering over the screen, my gaze fixated on the Blondie for a while.
How is he doing? Was he safe?
City C wasn’t exactly the best place to be right now with the trouble stirring everywhere, most importantly there, and I couldn’t shake the worry, he’s such a nice kid.
I set the communicator down beside me, exhaling slowly. There was nothing I could do about it from here. I’m not even in the best position to.
Closing my eyes, I forced myself to sleep.

When I woke up, the stiffness in my muscles had settled into a dull ache. I pushed myself up, rubbing my face before heading out.
I needed to check on Bella, she should be awake now.
The treatment section was quieter than I expected, truthfully, it’s just as they say that people tend to adapt to situations quickly even if it was unintended because once there are no immediate dangers, the mind tends to calm and assured, my current situation made me realize that.
A few Betas and Omega walked past, they didn’t speak or even try to mutter a word of greeting. I made my way through the rows of beds until I found her.
She was now awake.
Her eyes flickered to me as I approached, her face was pale like she had no blood in her body.
"About time," she muttered scratchily, "I’m almost bored to death here you know?"
I huffed, crossing my arms. "Didn’t know you were waiting for me." I teased, going to take a seat on the plastic chair beside the bed.
She smirked weakly. "Didn’t say I was."
Despite everything, I felt a small weight lift off my chest. At the very least, she was alive. That was all that mattered.
"How are you feeling?" I asked, staring at her.
"Like shit," she said, shifting slightly. "My arm hurts like hell from the injections. But I guess it’s good, I lived after all.."
I nodded, glancing at the IV hooked to her arm. "Good."
She studied me for a moment, then sighed. "You also didn’t look so well... don’t tell me you got run over by a trailer?"
"Gee," I muttered, dragging a hand through my hair, now she’s coming back to herself, she’s recovering really fast that much was vivid now. "Can you be serious for once?"
She let out a tired chuckle. "Definitely not. Anyways, what happened after I passed out?"
I hesitated. "You passed out in the car, but I got you back in time and here you are...breathing"
She flashed a faint smile and swiped her tongue over her dry lips, "I still find it funny. You see when I get bitten I actually think I’m going to die?"
I stayed silent, not knowing what to answer with.
After a while, she sighed again, closing her eyes briefly before looking at me. "And you? How are you holding up?"
"Fine," I said automatically.
"Liar." She snorted
I didn’t argue. There was no point.
After a moment, she tilted her head. "You know with death pretty close, and inevitable at that moment. I felt... I don’t know.. skeptical? And to be honest, I was afraid, what if the beast had got you like it got the rest." She swallowed hard, stopping for a while, her eyes rolling up to look at the ceiling, "And when I saw you’re still alive I felt relief, but then I realized I was poisoned... knowing you I was certain you would try to save me."
Bella smiled a little, but it didn’t reach her eyes like the ones she usually does. "Not gonna lie, I thought I was done for. I mean, I’ve been through a lot, but that..." She let out a weak chuckle. "That was different."
I didn’t say anything. I just let her talk.
Her fingers twitched against the blanket, as if she was testing whether she still had full control over them. Then, she looked at me again. "You know what’s funny? When I was lying there, half-conscious, I kept thinking if I go, will anyone really remember me?"
I frowned. "Don’t say that."
She huffed out a breath. "Why not? It’s a real thought."
I didn’t know what to say to that.
"But then I woke up, and here you are and here I am talking to you. Guess that means I made it, huh?"
I exhaled. "Yeah. You made it."
"You really are bad at talking." she murmured.
I let out a tired laugh. "Yeah."
She smiled again, just a small twitch of her lips. "Still. Thanks for saving me."
I looked at her, then away. "Don’t mention it."
"Now you’re acting like the real deal." She laughed, then winced. "Shit, don’t make me laugh. It hurts."
"Then stop laughing." I rolled my eyes at her, "I saw the instructor a while ago though."
"What did he say?"
"Nothing surprising, I’m just fucking pissed, but I guess I should be used to it now."
"Definitely. Do you know sometimes I wonder if I will ever get out of here... I used to think it was possible when you’re gone, but I’m not so sure now."
She sighed like she wanted to say more, but her body was already giving up on her again as her eyelids fluttered as she fought to stay awake.
"You should rest," I said quietly.
"Mm." Her eyes were already half-closed. "You’re still a liar, though."
I don’t dare ask what she meant by that, so I just stayed by her bedside a little longer, just watching her breathe. Then, when I was sure she had fallen asleep, I stood up and walked out.
I returned to my room, and yanked off my shirt the next moment the door closed, placed it on the bed along with the trousers as I got into the bathroom and opened the shower.
I stayed under it for a long while, just allowing the cold water to run down my skin, it was biting, not pleasant but comfort is not what I seek right then.
After a while, I stepped out, the water dripping down as I grabbed a towel from the wardrobe, dried my body then spread it on the bathroom hanger.
I rummaged through my things, I hadn’t even properly checked them since it was brought back.
My eyes caught a trouser. The same one I was wearing on the day of the pheromone attack and some memories flashed through my head again.
If I remember correctly, I found a piece of paper in the drawer and I had put it in my pocket, with the thought of looking into who it belonged to later since what was written in it made no sense.
But thinking about it now, it all made sense, the paper that contain the sentence LET IT BE DONE TONIGHT was not coincidentally found in my room, it was like, it had been placed there for someone to see and undoubtedly, that someone saw it, and then we were attacked unexpectedly!
I quickly dipped my hand into the first pocket, but it wasn’t there. I searched the second, and every other part of the trouser but nothing was there!
The note is gone,
However, the door suddenly clicked, and before I could stop whomever was out there due to the fact that I had nothing on, but it was too late as it was pushed open and the person entered.
