Chapter 61: Introspection

Everything that had happened had been outside the realm of what he could understand.

The dead old man coming to life was the most surprising thing of all, but then the death of the young woman because of what he had done had been something else that had hit him quite hard as well.

And now, the 2-Star ticket that he had come for in the first place was no more.

He sat back, not knowing what to do anymore. As he leaned against the body of the dead snake, he stared back toward the red figure, the broken corpse of the woman who had died.

Jax didn’t try to look away. Every fiber of his being wanted him to turn his head, to look at something else, but he forced himself to look straight toward the dead woman.

He had no qualms about stealing from someone he didn’t know or killing someone who had wronged him. However, killing someone who had done nothing to him didn’t sit right.

And to make matters worse, all of it had been for absolutely nothing at all. The old man was gone, with him the ticket. Because it had been the old man who had delivered the killing strike on the snake, Jax was certain that the old man had ended up earning the ticket. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

It might have even been the reason why he had disappeared suddenly.

’He got the ticket and left.’

He still couldn’t explain why the dead man had appeared before him after he had died. There could be any reason for him to appear as such.

As he had thought before, the old man could probably be a monster and not a human. That didn’t explain the ticket, though.

The old man also seemed very much angry toward him for some reason. Jax had thought that the old man was simply attributing to him a torture he had gone through at the hands of someone else, but what if... Jax had been the one to perform that torture?

Since he knew nothing from before he came to the Celestial Express, it was very much possible that he had met this man outside and given him all of those wounds.

That could be the reason why he had come after him, why he had tried so hard to kill him.

The chances of him being right were low, but the possibility was there, and that bothered him. He truly hoped he was not that man.

Jax focused back on the corpse again and sighed. "I can’t mope around like this," he thought. "This isn’t going to help my cause."

There was a reason why he had come to this place with this little time remaining when he could have spent his time improving and getting better over time. He wanted to get to the Navigator as soon as he could so that he could save the person he wanted to save.

The faster he got through it all, the quicker everything would be over.

’I have five days remaining,’ he thought. ’I should be able to do it very soon.’

He spent some time there, absorbing the Navi around him. He had used up a bit in the battle, so he wanted to spend some time absorbing it back.

He wondered if he should sleep too, but he couldn’t do that with that thing so close to him.

So, he stood up and walked away from the snake’s corpse. He arrived before the woman’s corpse and stopped for a moment. Parts of her body bent in ways that shouldn’t even have been possible.

Jax knelt before the corpse and lowered his head slightly. He mourned for her loss for some time before standing back up. He quickly went around, collecting what he could.

There weren’t many things around the place to loot, so he only got some of the snake scales before leaving the place entirely. Once he walked a decent distance outside of the room, a ripple emerged from the room, passing in every direction.

As it emerged, it distorted the landscape around Jax, clearing away walls where they existed and creating ones where they did not exist before.

He turned around to look for the boss’s room, but there was nothing but a wall there now. Instead, two paths could be found leading to either side for him to go.

’Is that how these changes happen?’ Jax wondered. He could see the defeat of a boss being the reason why the walls changed every so often.

’That does tell me how often the bosses are being beaten,’ Jax thought.

Now that he had a new path to walk on, he began walking again. He knew he needed to find a place to rest soon, and the only place that could be safe to rest in would be a boss’s room.

So, he needed to find one as soon as he could.

Jax walked around for miles, his entire body slowly getting drowsier and drowsier by the hour. He had to keep moving for the sake of not just finding a ticket but also for the sake of not meeting another person along the way.

Finally, Jax found another room with a boss monster in it. The entire room was filled with knee-deep water, with seemingly the shell of a massive turtle half-buried in the ground.

He looked up above at the ticket and found it to be a white ticket with a single star mark on it.

’A 1-Star ticket?’ Jax thought.

It was a rather bad ticket, but since he had found it, it was better if he got it as soon as he could. That would safeguard his future so that he would definitely enter the next Carriage, regardless of how bad the welcome gift would be.

And of course, he could always search for more bosses once he was done with this one. So, he prepared himself for a battle.

Navi spilled out of his sea and filled his body, empowering it. At the same time, the axe appeared in his hand, its weight giving a sense of reliance.

With everything ready, Jax walked in to kill the monster.
