Chapter 60: Disappeared

"You killed her," the man accused Jax. "You killed her."

Jax understood that much. If not for him, the woman would have survived. Although his intention had not been to kill someone, he had done it. The woman had died entirely because of his actions.

He could not deny what he was accused of.

A soft silver light covered the man at that moment. The man looked down at himself in somewhat surprise but quickly stopped fearing when he realized what was happening.

Since he had come with a companion, the moment his companion failed to move on to the next Carriage—due to her dying—he failed too. He would now get taken out of the maze.

As the man was fully covered in the silver light, he vanished from the location, teleported away. All that remained where he had been was the lifeless remains of the dead sorceress.

The old man stepped toward Jax.

"I won’t fail this time," he slowly said, his body seemingly growing weaker even as he fought. His steps staggered. "I will kill you this time, no matter what."

Jax turned to look at the old man, his eyes still showing the full extent of his internal emotions. The guilt on his face was clear for anyone to see.

The old man staggered again but found his footing as he dashed toward Jax, attempting to kill him in one strike.

Regardless of how Jax was feeling, his instinct instantly kicked in. He swung his axe to the side, parrying the old man’s first attack. The old man spun around, swinging with another attack.

A slight green glow surrounded him at that moment. The old man was no doubt using a spell.

Jax took a step back to dodge and quickly used his spell again. This time, he made sure to have the strings be as strong as he could while also putting the poison element onto them.

The old man’s attack missed, at which point he realized he was tied up. Instead of flexing through the many more strings this time, he used his sword to begin slicing at them.

Jax had made sure to use multiple different loops to make it difficult to get through them, but with a sword, he might just be able to clear through many of them at once.

He still had no idea who the old man was. He didn’t know his name or where he came from. In fact, he didn’t even know if he was human or not. Considering that he had died already and come back to life, Jax almost believed him to be a monster created by this world.

Jax swung at the man, not giving him a chance to get out. However, he was just slightly late. The man still got out of the strings and blocked the attack. But he wasn’t able to do it well.

The force Jax generated was the strongest he could, and with the weight of the axe, it carried a very strong momentum. Even though the old man placed his sword up in time, it wasn’t enough.

Jax sliced through the sword, cutting it in half. The sword itself was worn down to begin with, which helped, but the strength Jax put into that attack was something else as well.

The old man fell down on his back, slamming his entire body.

Jax quickly ran over him and swung down with his axe, fully intent on killing the old man. He didn’t even know why he wanted to kill this man at the moment. The reasons seemed so unimportant. He just wanted to be done with the fight.

As he swung down his axe, the old man blocked with what remained of his sword. The axe went halfway into the broken sword but couldn’t completely destroy it.

Jax pulled his axe back to try again, and this time, with it came the entire broken sword. His axe had lodged into it rather strongly.

The old man looked at the situation with wide eyes, realizing what was happening. He quickly reached for his inventory, trying to bring something out.

Jax gave him no such opportunity. He swung down with the axe, the sword coming down along with it to smash through the man. Jax put all his strength into this one single attack.

At the same moment, light flashed from the old man.

BANG!

A piece of the sword flew to the side, entirely cut in half now. The remaining portion with the hilt dug into the ground, along with Jax’s axe, which was halfway into the ground as well.

Jax’s eyes widened in surprise as he quickly moved backward and looked at the scene before him. The axe had landed on the ground right where the old man had been.

As for the old man, he was nowhere to be seen at all.

"He... he disappeared!"

He was certain he saw it correctly. Right as the attack was about to land, the old man had disappeared from before him, and Jax could not tell where he had gone.

"How..."

Nothing made any sense at all. It made no sense how the old man came or how he left. It made no sense that he was even alive.

Jax slowly moved back toward his axe and pulled it out of the ground. He wiped away the dirt from it and checked for some damage.

The red figure glared at him from the side, but Jax dared not turn his head. He could not face the consequences of his actions right away.

He turned toward the snake instead, watching some loot floating around it. He walked over and saw what it was. He hadn’t been the one to kill the snake, but since the old man didn’t take anything away, he could.

He grabbed Opal stones and Wind Elemental stones. He had hoped it would be something else, but this would do as well.

Next, he turned toward the ticket.

However, when he searched for it, there was no ticket there at all.
