Chapter 28: A TRIP

ADRIANA’S POV

I stretched my legs as I got down from the bed, a yawn escaping past my lips as I walked to the door, my hand on my aching head.

A wave of dizziness hit me and I stopped, mid short of the door, a groan escaping my lips as I stared at the door.

Just a few more steps.

Slowly but surely, I stumbled out of the room and walked down the hallway to the stairs where I paused, listening to the faint voices from downstairs.

"... Theo about it"

"No, I’ll handle it myself"

I slowly walked down the stairs, catching a glimpse of Vincenzo and Val at the counter in the kitchen talking about something.

Or more like Val was actively trying to explain something but he had his face buried in a cup of coffee and was only giving half-hearted answers.

The conversation stopped immediately after I was there and Vincenzo raised his gaze to look at me.

I froze on instinct wondering how he knew I was there when I hadn’t made a noise. He looked me over carefully then looked back down at the coffee in his hands, a weird expression briefly crossing his face.

Val who finally noticed me walked up to me, her expression still troubled as she forced a smile at me. "Good morning. I didn’t realize that you were awake, I was just about to come to check up on you" she said, placing a hand on my shoulder.

I spared another look at Vincenzo who was swirling the contents of his cup slowly, his gaze fixed on the rim of the mug.

"What are you doing here this morning?" My voice came out more hoarse than I expected.

"Oh, I couldn’t just leave you, could I?" Val smiled genuinely this time, leading me to the couch where she made me take a seat.

"Wait... what did you put in my drink yesterday?" I asked, my hand going to my head which was throbbing.

Val’s smile disappeared for a slight moment and she shrugged. "I felt that you wouldn’t be able to sleep again and you needed the rest so I had to put pills in the water" She explained, watching me for my reaction.

My bottom lip quivered and I looked away from her, my voice slightly above a whisper. "Don’t ever do that again"

She seemed confused because she sat beside me, leaning forward on her elbows. "You just needed some slㅡ"

"It won’t happen again" Vincenzo’s voice cut in, hard and annoyed. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

I looked up to see him standing in front of me so suddenly, stretching out a mug to me.

"What’s in it?" I managed to ask, peering at it.

"Coffee. You’ll need it. You’re going out today anyways" He muttered, looking away from my searching gaze.

Val nodded to him and exited the house, her hands tucked in her pockets.

"If you think I’ll go out for training today, you’re poorly mistaken" I coughed slightly, my throat burning.

"I never said we were going out for training, you know?" His nostrils flared and he looked back at me.

I glared at him openly. "What? Gotten tired of my company already? Or what, about to give me up to ’Ravolo’, is that it?" A bitter smile made my lips curve upwards.

His hand around the mug tightened and he dropped it on the coffee table. "If you believe I would actually gift you out to someone else, you’re poorly mistaken too. You stay here. We made a deal and I’m trying to keep to it"

"What’s this about?" I watched as he strolled back to the counter, rolling his sleeves up as he leaned on the counter.

It was barely nine in the morning yet he looked like he had just come out from a business meeting with the painfully neat and formal shirt and trousers he had on.

Black.

He liked the color.

"Valentina told me of what happened last night. The nightmare" He was watching me carefully, his eyes dark.

I stiffened in my seat and looked down at my knotted fingers, a feeling of trepidation washing over me. "It was just a stupid nightmare"

"I’m guessing it was not. Do you have something you want to tell me about your past? A trauma perhaps?" He was casual about it but my heart started thudding in my chest.

"What the hell makes you think that?" My tone was flat and I managed to keep eye contact with those piercing hazel eyes that followed my every movement.

"I know how someone with PTSD behaves," He said, his eyes narrowing.

I ignored his words and leaned my head back against the chair. "Where are we going anyways?"

"Out. Just a change of scenery, don’t you think?", he was walking away from the counter already.

I perked up at that, a small bubble of excitement rising.

"Henry and Val will be with you there"

"Are you coming?" The question slipped past my lips.

He stopped at the foot of the stairs. "Do you want me to?"

"No," I said without thinking.

"Exactly" he huffed then went up the stairs, leaving me staring into space.

I was about to stand up when the door to the house was pushed open and someone sauntered in.

A smile unwittingly broke out on my face as I saw who it was. "Henry"

He smiled back at me, his eyes brightening slightly. "You’re awake already. I came here earlier but you weren’t down yet. Where’s the boss?" He asked.

I nodded towards the stairs and he nodded, looking at me. "We’re going out today..."

"I know, I’ve been informed. Where exactly?" I asked, sitting back down and gesturing to the opposite chair where he sat down.

"Val thinks going to the park for a few hours would be great" He smiled slightly.

"The...park?"

"Yeah, don’t worry, you’ll be safe" He quickly assured.

"Oh no, that’s not what I’m thinking about. I’m just wondering why we’re even going out" I muttered.

His face fell and he cleared his throat. "Be glad the Boss is giving you leverage today" He simply said.

Be glad? I should be glad I wasn’t dead yet.

Yet.
