Chapter 116: Forgive Me 116

Scoffing, she lifted the cup again. "I suppose I’ll manage."

She took another sip. Then another, and before she knew it, the cup was empty.

Blinking down at it, she exhaled through her nose, begrudgingly reaching for the teapot to pour herself more. But as she lifted it, a small, yellow piece of paper, weakly glued underneath, slipped free and fluttered down onto the tray.

Setting the teapot aside, she picked up the note and unfolded it.

Her eyes scanned the words, and her left eye twitched as she read, "I knew you’d love it." A small heart was also drawn next to the words.

She crushed the paper in her fist and hurled it forward with all her might. "Smug idiot!"

Nine Hours Later

Enzo strode through the second-floor hallway, scrolling through his phone with one hand while carrying a takeaway bag in the other.

He had planned to return much earlier, but a few annoying problems at the company had kept him tied up longer than expected.

Reaching the door to their room, he slid his phone into his pocket and grabbed the handle, pushing it open. A beaming smile stretched across his lips as he stepped inside.

"I’m home, cupcake—" His voice cut off, and his smile faltered when he didn’t see her.

The room was dim, the curtains drawn tightly over the windows for some reason. Frowning slightly, he shut the door behind him with the back of his leg.

"Adeline?" he called, his voice carrying a slight edge of confusion as he scanned the room. "Where are you?"

He got no response. A strange, cold sensation crept up his spine, and for the first time in a long while, an unfamiliar emotion flickered in his chest—fear.

Behind him, a shadow shifted, and a pair of glowing blue eyes snapped open in the darkness. The figure dashed toward him, leaping into the air, its arms wrapping around his neck, and legs locked loosely around his waist.

Enzo’s body jerked slightly from the sudden weight. His head snapped to the side, ready to grab the attacker, but he froze when he caught a glimpse of blonde hair. Realizing it was Adeline, relief washed over him like a crashing wave.

She was frowning, her hair falling over one eye from the quick jump, the other glaring up at him with irritation.

"And what exactly are you doing, cupcake?"

Adeline huffed. "You dastard! How dare you almost cripple me and then leave me to suffer alone the entire day!"

Enzo raised a brow, momentarily lost. "Cripple you?" He tried to process her words before realization dawned on him. His lips curled, a slow, mischievous grin spreading across his face as he wiggled his brows teasingly. "Ohh... you mean last night."

Adeline’s face scrunched with disgust. "Stop making that stupid face! I swear, I’m going to kill you."

She yanked herself backward, attempting to pull him off balance, but It didn’t do much.

Amused by her antics, Enzo decided to play along. With a grunt, he intentionally staggered back dramatically, making it look like she had actually succeeded.

"Oh no!" he exclaimed, laughing as he caught himself. Reaching behind him, he tugged at her cheek, stretching it slightly.

"That’s not very smart, Adeline. You do realize that if I actually fall, you’ll be the one taking all the damage, right?"

Adeline gritted her teeth, shaking her head violently to rid herself of his hand. "Shut up."

Enzo sighed and turned toward the bed, still carrying her on his back. Reaching the bedside table, he set down the takeaway bag before clicking on the light switch, brightening the room.

Then, gripping both of her arms, he gently pried them apart from around his neck. With a shake of his body, her legs loosened, giving him the perfect opportunity to pull her away from his back and set her on her feet behind him.

As soon as he turned to face her, he was met with the sight of her scowling up at him. She wore a pair of blue Daisy Duke shorts and a snug white crop top, and something about the way she stood there—all riled up and her brows wrinkled in annoyance—made it hard for him not to laugh.

Slapping a hand across his face, he chuckled. "You’re so adorable when you’re angry, it’s almost hilarious."

Adeline ignored his words and jabbed a finger at his chest. "You didn’t even bother to call me the entire day! I’ve been in pain every time I accidentally moved a certain way, and it only stopped like an hour ago!"

Enzo sighed, his smirk fading as his expression softened with guilt. Reaching out, he placed a hand on her shoulder. "I’m really sorry, Adeline. I was so occupied today I didn’t even get a chance to check my phone. Can you forgive me?"

Adeline promptly slapped his hand away, crossing her arms. "No."

Just as the words left her mouth, Enzo’s hands slipped under her arms, and before she could react, her feet left the floor. She yelped as he hoisted her up with ease, lifting her until she was level with his face.

"You know, for someone as cute as you, you’ve got quite the temper." 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

Adeline wiggled her legs, her hands pushing against his shoulders. "Put me down! Or else—"

"No," Enzo interrupted, shaking his head. He then flipped her over his shoulder, her waist resting against it while her legs dangled in front and her upper half hung behind him.

Holding her securely by the hips, he laughed when he felt her fists pound against his back.

"I swear, Enzo! I’m really going to kill you this time!" Adeline fumed, writhing in his hold. "Put me down!"

Enzo refused, entirely unbothered by her threats. "No. Not until you forgive me."

She struggled a bit more, squirming and kicking her legs as she attempted to pry herself from his grasp, but it was no use. No matter how much she wiggled or pushed, Enzo’s grip remained unyielding.

A long sigh eventually escaped her lips as she went limp against his shoulder. She realized she wasn’t getting out of this unless she gave him what he wanted. "Fine, I forgive you."
