Chapter 38: An Anniversary Or A Trap? 38

Her eyes widened as she quickly checked the date on her phone. Seeing that it was really their anniversary, she laughed awkwardly into the phone. "I... might have forgotten. I’m so sorry, Evelyn."

Evelyn’s warm laugh came through, brushing aside her apology. "It’s fine, Addie. You’ve had a lot going on lately, so I get it. But hey, how about we meet at our favorite café? I’ve got a little present for you."

As Adeline listened, her ears picked up the sound of the door to her room creaking open, and she turned her head just enough to see Enzo entering the room.

He closed the door behind him, casting a quick glance her way. As he walked past her, he reached out and lightly patted her head. "Hey, cupcake."

Adeline, still on the call, ignored him, too focused on what Evelyn was saying. Enzo made his way over to the couch, picking up a stack of company files and settling down to skim through them while Adeline finished her call.

"I’ll meet you there in a bit," Adeline said into the phone before hanging up and placing her phone on the desk. She stood up and crossed the room to her walk-in closet, rifling through her clothes.

A few minutes later, she stepped out of the closet wearing a pair of blue jeans matched with black shoes. She had chosen a black button-up shirt, which she tucked into her jeans, leaving the first two buttons undone.

She walked back to her vanity, sitting down to tie her hair into a messy bun. As she worked, Enzo’s gaze wandered from the files in his hands to her reflection in the mirror, his eyes following the way she twisted her hair with her slender fingers. He was so engrossed in watching her that he barely registered the files slipping from his hand and dropping onto the couch next to him.

Adeline began applying light makeup, dusting her cheeks with blush and adding a touch of gloss to her lips.

Enzo stood and moved across the room, stopping behind her. Leaning down until his face was level with hers, he rested his chin lightly on her shoulder so his reflection was visible in the mirror.

"Where are you going? You look beautiful."

Adeline paused, her eyes meeting his in the mirror. Her cheeks heated up slightly at his unexpected compliment. She avoided his gaze in the mirror, instead focusing on her makeup, and pushed his head away lightly with her free hand. "Shut up....I’m going to meet Evelyn. It’s our friendship anniversary."

Enzo’s smirk disappeared, replaced by a small frown as he straightened up, leaning back against the edge of Adeline’s vanity desk. "I’m coming with you."

"Absolutely not," she said firmly, waving her hands.

"It’s for your safety. Do I need to start explaining why again?"

She exhaled loudly, snapping the cover of her makeup kit closed before rising to her feet. "Nothing is going to happen, Enzo. It’s just a quick outing to the café with Evelyn. I’ll be fine."

They stood there, staring at each other in silence with neither wanting to back down. After about half a minute, Enzo sighed and shrugged, brushing past her as he walked back to the couch.

He slumped into it and picked up the files again. "Since you insist, then fine," he said nonchalantly, flipping a page. "But don’t come crying for help if something happens. And just to be clear, this is not part of my promise to keep harm away from you. You’re on your own for today."

Adeline scoffed, rolling her eyes. "You might have saved me a few times, but that doesn’t mean I can’t take care of myself," she muttered, heading toward the closet.

Enzo let out a quiet chuckle, his eyes never leaving the file in his hand. "Alright, princess. Whatever you say."

Adeline grabbed one of her luxury purses from the closet, and without sparing him another glance, she turned and marched out of the room, letting the door slam shut behind her.

As she approached the front door, Evans stood hidden behind one of the large pillars in the foyer, his eyes following her every move.

From above, on the staircase, Enzo leaned against the railing with his gaze fixated on Evans.

Reaching the garage, Adeline opened the door to her car and slid inside. The car hummed as she started it, and moments later, she was driving out of the garage and through the gates of the estate.

Outside the mansion, Evans emerged from his hiding spot and watched her car disappear into the distance. He pulled out his phone from his pocket and raised it to his ear. When the call connected, Dacatt’s voice came through.

"What’s up?"

Evans lowered his voice, speaking into the receiver in a hushed tone. "She’s on her way."

Before Dacatt could respond, Evans felt a firm hand grip his shoulder. The sudden contact made his heart leap in his chest, and he spun around to see Enzo. Standing beside him was Andrei.

Enzo’s smile was wide, almost unsettling, as he clasped his hands behind his back and leaned in. "Hello, Uncle Evans. You look like you’ve just seen a ghost. What’s got you so startled?"

Evans’ expression twisted with disgust as he quickly ended the call. He shoved his phone into his pocket and brushed off his shoulder where Enzo had touched him. "You walked up on me like that. What do you think?"

Enzo let out a low, elegant laugh, waving his hand. "My apologies, Uncle. I didn’t mean to frighten you."

Evans’ eyes darted between Enzo and Andrei, suspecting they might have heard him. "How long have you been here?" he demanded, clenching his fists tightly at his sides.

"Oh, not long," Enzo replied with a small shake of his head. "I was just passing by, saw you standing here. I thought it would be rude not to say hello."

Grinding his teeth, Evans said nothing. Without another word, he pushed past the both of them, his shoulder brushing roughly against Enzo’s as he stormed back into the mansion, slamming the door shut behind him.

Enzo remained where he stood, watching the closed door with a satisfied smirk. Slowly, he turned his head toward Andrei, who stood motionless by his side and gave him a small nod. Andrei simply bowed his head and walked off.
