Chapter 39: Enzo? 39

Adeline parked her car near the café, looking out her window to see if she could spot Evelyn, but when she wasn’t able to, she sighed and rolled the glass up. She reached for her lipstick in the glove compartment, touching up her lips in the rearview mirror.

Once she was satisfied that she looked impeccable, she grabbed her bag and stepped out of the car, locking the door behind her. The cool, fresh air caressed her skin, prompting her to adjust her shirt as she strolled down the sidewalk.

A small smile crept onto her face when she finally spotted Evelyn across the road, standing in front of the café’s entrance. Evelyn was waving enthusiastically at her with a wide grin on her face.

She chuckled and waved back, her pace quickening as she closed the distance between herself and the crosswalk. She stopped at the edge of the road, waiting for the light to turn green while her eyes stayed on Evelyn.

Suddenly, a black van drove up and stopped near Evelyn. At first, Adeline thought nothing of it. But the moment the van’s back door slid open and a masked man stepped out, her heart dropped.

"Evelyn!" she screamed as the man’s hand shot out, clamping over Evelyn’s mouth before she could react. Her muffled scream barely reached Adeline’s ears as the man dragged her into the van. In seconds, the door slammed shut, and the van sped off down the road, disappearing around the corner.

Adeline staggered backward, confused, her chest heaving, and tears began to cloud her vision. Her fingers quivered uncontrollably as she fumbled to pull her phone from her purse. The screen lit up, but the tears dripping onto it made it impossible to type.

"Damn it, damn it!" she muttered through sobs, wiping the screen on her shirt in frustration. Finally, she managed to unlock it and scrolled frantically through her contacts, trying to decide who to call for help.

"Adeline," came a familiar voice from behind her, followed by a soft laugh. She paused, immediately recognizing the tone.

Enzo.

She turned around, her teary eyes meeting his tall figure as he stepped closer, his hands stuffed into his pockets.

"My, my," he said with a teasing smirk, tilting his head. "Aren’t you supposed to be celebrating an anniversary? And here you are... crying on the street like a child."

Adeline’s lip quivered as more tears spilled down her cheeks. She had never been more glad to see him. She pointed desperately toward the other side of the road. "Enzo! Evelyn—she—she was taken! A man—he pulled her into a black van!"

Enzo’s eyebrow quirked upwards, and he gave a loud, exaggerated gasp. "Oh dear," he said sarcastically. "That’s... awful. Truly"

Adeline grabbed his arms tightly, shaking them. "Please, Enzo, you have to help me! She might get hurt or worse if we don’t do something!"

"I thought you said you were capable of taking care of yourself," he asked. "Why don’t you go after the van? Or maybe... call the police?"

Adeline shook her head violently, unable to even muster a response. All she could do was mumble, "Please, please..." over and over again.

Enzo’s smirk finally disappeared, and with a quiet sigh, he reached out, grabbing her wrist and pulling her into his arms. One hand gently cradled the back of her head, pressing her tear-streaked face against his chest. His other hand rested lightly on her back as he murmured, "Shh, don’t cry. You’re going to give yourself a headache. You don’t have to worry. It’s already being handled."

Adeline hiccupped, her sobs quieting just a little at his words. She drew her head back, her eyes locking onto his as she looked up at him. "What... what do you mean?"

Enzo smiled, his hand coming up to brush her tears away with his thumb. He leaned down slightly, booping her nose playfully. "Andrei’s on it. He’s following that van as we speak. The moment they stop, he’ll send me the location. I’ll go see who’s behind this mess and bring your little friend back. Sound good?"

Speechless, Adeline stared at him. Overwhelmed with relief, she released a long, shaky breath, and without thinking, threw her arms around him and hugged him tightly, burying her face in his chest. "Thank you so much, Enzo."

Almost a full minute passed, yet Adeline still held onto him.

He let out a warm laugh, running his hand through her hair as he said, "Alright, princess, you can let go now. I know I’m irresistible, but you’re starting to cut off my circulation."

Realizing how long she’d been holding onto him, Adeline quickly released him.

"You just had to ruin the moment...idiot," she muttered, shoving him lightly in the chest before stepping back. She looked away, wiping the remaining tears from her cheeks, and straightened her posture.

When her eyes found him once more, Enzo stood there with his arms crossed and a cocky grin plastered on his face.

"What?" she asked.

"You’re just so adorable when you’re all worked up."

"Shut the fuck up, Enzo."

Enzo shook his head, taking a step towards her and encircling her arm with his hand. "Come on," he said, starting to lead her back toward the car. "Let’s go wait. Andrei will send me the location soon."

They walked side by side for a moment, and then a question randomly popped into Adeline’s mind. She glanced up at him, narrowing her eyes suspiciously. "By the way, how did you even know I was here?"

Enzo’s lips twitched as he averted his gaze, holding back a laugh.

Her eyes widened in realization, and she gasped before jabbing her elbow into his side. "You followed me, didn’t you?!"

Enzo winced, placing a hand over the spot where she’d hit him even though it didn’t hurt. "Ow! You’re so mean. And yes, I followed you, but for a good reason. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have known this happened, and by the time you got back to tell me, it might’ve been too late."

Adeline wanted to argue but knew he had a point. Still, she muttered under her breath, "Stalker."
