Chapter 42: No Other Choice But To Tell Her 42

As they turned the corner at the intersection, Adeline’s hand flew to her mouth as she saw the two unconscious men on the floor. She spun around at Enzo, her eyes wide as she asked, "What happened here?"

"I have no idea."

"You’re lying, aren’t you?" She asked, a skeptical look crossing her face.

Enzo feigned offense, raising his eyebrows, and letting out a scoff. "You think I’m lying?"

Adeline threw her hands up, confused and a little bit frustrated. She barely had any idea what was going on anymore.

"I don’t know! You did shove me into a room out of nowhere and claimed you saw some men approaching. Could these be the men you were talking about?" She gestured toward the unconscious bodies on the floor.

"First of all, you were only in that room for ten seconds or even less. You really think that’s enough time for me to... what, knock these guys out?" Enzo asked, gesturing dramatically at the bodies.

Adeline glanced back at the men, realizing he had a point. Exasperated, she spun around and faced away from him. "Whatever. Let’s just keep going."

As they neared the door at the end of the hallway, a frown creased Adeline’s forehead, her footsteps quickening as the sound of muffled voices came from the other side. She rushed to the door and pressed her ear against it, intent on eavesdropping.

"I know you visited Adeline at the hospital. What did you talk about with her?" a male voice demanded.

Adeline froze, almost forgetting how to breathe for a moment as she recognized Evelyn’s trembling voice that followed.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about! I only visited her because she got into an accident, that’s all! Please, I don’t know anything!"

The sound of a resounding crash reverberated from inside the room, much like a fist slamming into a table or chair. Startled, Adeline recoiled, taking a step backward.

Behind her, Enzo and Andrei stood silently, exchanging a look. Unlike Adeline, they didn’t need to press their ears to the door; their heightened hearing as vampires allowed them to catch every word clearly.

Just as she leaned in again, eager to hear more, Enzo’s hand abruptly seized her arm, pulling her back with a sharp tug.

"Hey, what are you—" she tried to protest, but her words were cut off by the sound of a gunshot.

A bullet tore through the door, passing through the exact spot where her head had been just a few second earlier. If Enzo hadn’t pulled her back, the bullet would’ve gone straight through her skull.

"You’re welcome," he said, letting go of her arm.

Andrei surged forward and hoisted his foot into the air, forcefully kicking at the door. The impact sent the door flying off its hinges and crashing into the room.

Taken off guard, she briefly lost her balance, bracing herself by gripping Enzo’s arm. Her gaze flickered to the room ahead, noticing a slight movement of a window closing at the distant end. Whoever had been present had just made their escape.

In the center of the room sat Evelyn, tied to a chair with ropes binding her arms and legs. A blindfold covered her eyes, and her face was streaked with dirt and tears.

Hearing the sound of footsteps, Evelyn began to struggle frantically. "Stay away! Don’t come near me!"

Adeline’s eyes filled with tears at the sight of her best friend in such a state. She rushed into the room, dropping to her knees in front of Evelyn and wrapping her arms around her.

"It’s okay! You’re safe now."

"Adeline? Is that you?"

"Yes, it’s me," Adeline answered quickly, standing up and reaching for the blindfold, untying it.

Andrei stepped forward and began untying the ropes binding Evelyn to the chair. As soon as the last knot was undone, she shot up from the chair and threw herself into Adeline’s arms with so much force that they both almost fell over.

"I thought I’d never see you again!" She sobbed into her shoulder, clutching her tightly.

Adeline hugged her back just as tightly as tears streamed down her face. "Me too... I was so scared."

When they pulled apart, Adeline grabbed her friend’s shoulders, looking her over for any visible injuries. "Are you okay? They didn’t hurt you, did they?"

Evelyn shook her head softly, extending her hands to take Adeline’s into her own. The touch was gentle, her fingers wrapping around Adeline’s in a reassuring grip.

"No, they didn’t hurt me. But the man kept asking me questions about you. About the car crash, about what we talked about when I visited you in the hospital. I don’t understand what he really wants. Adeline, what is going on? Is there something you’re not telling me?"

Adeline bit her lip and looked down, her fingers tightening slightly around Evelyn’s hands.

Evelyn didn’t deserve to be dragged into this, but with everything she had been through today, Adeline couldn’t keep her in the dark any longer. And after this kidnapping, who knew what might happen next? It could be even worse.

Her gaze flickered to Enzo, who was standing a few steps away, silently asking for his approval. The last time she’d tried to tell Evelyn the truth, Enzo had stopped her, but this time, he nodded.

Adeline nodded back and reverted her attention back to Evelyn. She began to explain everything—how her uncles were after her inheritance and how the only way for them to take it was by killing her.

She told Evelyn about the car crash, revealing that it wasn’t an accident but an attempted murder orchestrated by her Uncle Alfonso. She went on to reveal that Enzo had been pretending to be her fiancé, all as part of a plan to expose her uncles.

By the time Adeline finished, Evelyn’s face was pale with shock. Her eyes were wide, and her mouth hung slightly open. She slowly turned her gaze to Enzo, her voice trembling as she stammered, "F-Fiancé?"

Enzo simply gave her a lazy nod.

"Your uncles are trying to kill you?!" she asked, turning back to Adeline.

Adeline nodded. "Enzo here has been saving me. He’s the only reason I’m still here."
