Chapter 41: Does It Hurt? 41

Enzo nodded, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a handkerchief, which he then chucked to Andrei. "Clean yourself up. You look like a damn butcher."

Catching the handkerchief in midair, Andrei proceeded to wipe away the blood from his face with it. Meanwhile, Adeline hesitantly stretched out her foot, nudging one of the bodies with the tip of her shoe. When there was no reaction, she recoiled, shivering in disgust.

"Are... are they even still alive?"

Enzo cast a cursory glance at the motionless bodies, followed by an indifferent shrug of his shoulders. "Probably. Then again, maybe not."

Adeline gasped, turning her head to look at him with her eyes widened in shock. "What do you mean by that?"

He sighed, tugging her forward gently as they passed through the gate. He stopped walking and turned to her, reaching out to lightly tug her cheek as if she were a child. "Even if they’re dead, I don’t care. They had it coming when they chose this line of work. And don’t forget—they’re the ones holding your best friend right now. Think about that."

Adeline swallowed hard, her grip on his arm tightening as they walked further into the compound. She cast another glance at the bodies, unable to get over it. It was her first time seeing a human body in such a state with her own two eyes. "So Andrei did all of this on his own?"

Enzo nodded. "Indeed." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

Her pupils shifted to Andrei, who was now silently following them, and she felt a shiver run down her spine. "I always knew there was something far scarier behind that pale, expressionless face of his."

The three of them made their way down the hallway with Andrei leading them. Enzo walked in the middle with his hands stuffed into his pockets while Adeline trailed behind, her head constantly turning as she took in the creepy surroundings. There were exposed wires, ruined tiles, cracked walls, and peeling paint.

"This place looks like something you’d see in a horror—" She was cut off mid-sentence as Enzo wrenched open a door beside her, grabbing her shoulders and pushing her inside.

"Stay here," he said, twisting the knob to lock the door behind her.

She let out a yelp as she stumbled into the dark room, falling backward onto something soft. She landed on a pile of old sacks, dust puffing into the air around her as she hit the ground.

Outside the door, peering around the corner of the intersection, Andrei spotted two armed men guarding a nearby door. He swiftly withdrew and turned to Enzo, nodding in confirmation. In return, Enzo acknowledged the signal with a firm nod of his own.

Andrei darted forward first, closing the distance between him and the first guard in the blink of an eye. The two armed guards flinched as they saw him, and the first man quickly raised his gun, his finger reaching for the trigger to fire, but Andrei was faster.

He grabbed the barrel of the gun and twisted it out of his hand. With an upward kick, he struck the man under the jaw.

The guard’s vision blurred as he stumbled back. Andrei reached out and grabbed him by the shoulders, pulling him close and driving his knee into his stomach, sending him crumpling to the ground.

The second guard was turning his weapon in Andrei’s direction when, all of a sudden, Enzo appeared next to him. His eyes darted back to the area he could’ve sworn he had just seen him standing, then back at him, confused.

Enzo raised his hand and delivered a painful smack to the guard’s hand, knocking the gun out of his grip and sending it skidding across the floor.

The guard attempted to reach for the weapon, but before he could, Enzo crouched down, seizing him by the front of his shirt and easily hoisting him off the ground with a cruel smile.

Upon regaining her bearings, Adeline let out a soft groan as she sat up. Blinking to clear her head, she then stood up and dusted herself off.

She looked around the room in annoyance, muttering, "What the hell was that for?"

She stomped toward the door and reached for the doorknob, ready to fling it open and give Enzo a piece of her mind, but before she could, the door swung open on its own.

Enzo stood there, smiling down at her as if nothing unusual had happened. "Ah, there you are."

Adeline glared at him with her fists clenched at her sides. Without thinking, she threw a punch at his stomach, putting all her might into the blow. Her fist made contact with his abs, but it felt like she’d punched a brick wall.

Enzo didn’t even flinch. Instead, he chuckled, looking down at her in amusement.

Her eyes involuntarily twitched with pain, and she hastily jerked her hand back, clutching it with her other hand as a pang surged through her arm.

She bit down on her lip, doing everything in her power to endure the pain without showing it, but the throbbing ache in her knuckles only seemed to intensify.

Enzo bent down slightly, his features morphing into a mocking display of false concern. "Are you alright there, cupcake?"

Adeline clenched her fists tighter, her face turning red—partly from embarrassment and partly from the pain. "Why the hell did you just push me in there?" she snapped, her voice louder than she intended. She needed to let the frustration and pain out somehow.

Enzo’s eyes widened slightly as he caught sight of the solitary tear forming in the corner of her eye. It hung there, wanting to fall, but Adeline stubbornly blinked it back, refusing to let it drop.

He felt a laugh building within him, but he quickly stifled it, clearing his throat instead. "My apologies. I thought I saw some men approaching and didn’t want you to get hurt."

She glowered at him suspiciously, moving her gaze to Andrei, who had been silently watching them. In response, he merely shrugged.

Rolling her eyes, she pushed against Enzo’s chest, barely managing to move him. "Let’s just go," she muttered, brushing past him and walking ahead.
