Chapter 57: You Love Me, Adeline Smith 57

Enzo chuckled weakly, his lips twitching into a small smile. His pale face showed strain, but his eyes held a faint glimmer of amusement. "Don’t worry, it’s not that bad at all. Andrei is just trying to scare you. I’ll be fine." He turned his head toward Andrei. "Go on."

Andrei nodded, snapping the forceps once again, eliciting a gasp from Adeline. Scoffing, she stepped away from Andrei’s side and circled the bed, her finger gripping the bedpost as she stared at them, unsure if she could handle what she was about to see.

The moment the forceps dug into the wound on Enzo’s stomach, blood welled up around their metal instrument. The revolting, squelchy sound filled the room, and a wave of nausea washed over Adeline.

She clamped her hand over her mouth, gagging at the sight, her head shaking violently as she turned away. "I can’t—oh god, I can’t do this anymore."

But then, she stopped herself.

She lowered her trembling hands and took a deep, shaky breath before murmuring, "No. I have to. That’s my—" She faltered, the word fiancé sticking in her throat. "That’s my...fiancé lying on that bed. Even though it’s all fake and I totally despise him, I have to do this."

Steeling herself, Adeline turned back to face Enzo and gripped the edge of the bed, forcing her eyes to remain open, even as her gaze landed on his stomach.

Enzo, through his gritted teeth and shallow breaths, glanced at her and managed a pained laugh. "You don’t have to watch, you know. If you can’t handle it..."

"Shut up," Adeline muttered, refusing to look away.

"How adorable, but don’t end up looking away anyway, because– FUCK!" he exclaimed suddenly as a searing pain radiated from his stomach.

He hissed through clenched teeth, lifting his head slightly to glare at Andrei, who calmly said, "I’m about to pull the bullet out now." 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Enzo inhaled deeply, letting his head fall back onto the pillow as he braced himself.

Andrei pulled the bullet out with a steady hand, the metallic clang echoing as it landed on the tray.

Adeline snapped her eyes shut and turned away. It was all too disgusting to look at.

Andrei grabbed cotton wool and antiseptic, the smell of alcohol filling the room as he began cleaning the wound.

Once again, she hesitantly opened her eyes and forced herself to look. "This isn’t normal," she thought, her eyes shifting to Enzo’s face. "No normal human could survive this much blood loss or endure this level of pain. What kind of a guy is this?"

Enzo caught her staring and mustered the strength to flash her a weak smile, followed by a flirty wink. In response, Adeline’s brows knitted together into a frown.

"Stop that, you idiot."

"Look at you. All worried and panicked over me," he said, his smile transforming into a mischievous grin. "I didn’t know you loved me this much."

Her face scrunched in mild disgust. "Love?" she asked, rolling her eyes. "I think the pain is making you delusional. I’m only here because I don’t want you dying on me before we finish what we started."

"Sure, sure."

Andrei finished wrapping the bandage around Enzo’s stomach, tying it off with a neat knot. He took a step, studying his handiwork for a moment before giving Enzo a quick nod.

The pain in his stomach finally began subsiding. The wound had already begun to close, the perks of being a vampire. He shifted on the bed, testing his movements.

"Now for the shoulder. You’ll need to sit up for this one, Boss."

Grasping the edge of the bed, Enzo exerted himself and pushed himself up, a low grunt escaping from between his clenched teeth as he maneuvered his injured body.

Reacting instinctively, Adeline moved to assist him, but his quick movements beat her to it. Enzo had already pushed himself upright before she could even touch him. He sat at the edge of the bed, his legs touching the ground, with Adeline standing directly in front of him.

Andrei dragged the small table with the medical tools and walked around the bed. Stopping beside Enzo, he began cleaning the area with antiseptic-soaked cotton wool first, before positioning the forceps over the wound.

He slowly inserted the forceps into the wound, and as the metal tool probed deeper, Enzo hissed. When Andrei finally gripped the bullet, Enzo’s hands balled into a fist, pressing down on the mattress.

He pulled the bullet free, dropping it into the metal tray before grabbing the cotton wool and antiseptic, dabbing at the area.

As he continued to clean the wound, Enzo’s attention remained on Adeline. She was aware of his gaze on her but avoided meeting his eyes, feeling a bit flustered and awkward under the attention.

After a few moments under his relentless gaze, she finally snapped, unable to resist the urge to look him in the eye. "Will you stop looking at me like that, dammit?"

"No," he said, whipping his head back and forth.

"If you don’t stop, I swear to god, I’ll punch you."

"Go ahead and make me. Punch me, Adeline."

Adeline blinked at him, momentarily lost for words.

Enzo wasn’t done, though. He extended his hand and latched onto her wrist, pulling her forward, bringing her closer to his own frame. His larger hand completely enveloped hers, her eyes widened as she stumbled forward slightly, caught off guard.

Enzo lifted her hand, pressing her palm against his cheek. "See?" he murmured softly. "You won’t do it because you love me, Adeline Smith."

For a moment, she was taken aback, absorbing the situation. Then, as her disbelief dissipated, her features twisted in revulsion, and she forcefully jerked her hand away, clenching it into a tight, annoyed fist.

She raised it, fully intending to punch him, but paused mid-air as she remembered his condition. "You’re insufferable," she muttered, letting out a frustrated sigh as she lowered her hand.

"I knew it."

She jabbed a finger against his forehead, causing his head to involuntarily tilt back, her voice rising. "Shut the hell up! I’m not doing it because you’re already hurt! If you weren’t, you’d be picking your teeth off the floor by now!"

He laughed, shaking his head. "Oh please," he said between chuckles. "As if any of your punches have ever hurt me."
