Selene POV

When I got to my room, luckily maids were waiting to assist me. I also wanted to drop by the girls’ room to check up on them since I hadn’t seen them since yesterday. By the time I showered and dressed, I just had five minutes left before 9 am. So, I started towards the girls’ room. I was going to go late by the way and since I didn’t know how long we would be in therapy, I best go now.

As I rounded the corner that led to their room, someone stepped onto my path making me stop abruptly. When I looked up, it was Brooke and she had an insufferable smirk playing across her lips.

"goddess!" I sighed muttering loud enough for her to hear me "Not another bad luck again. What do you want?" I turned to her regarding her coldly "You best hurry up with whatever it is you want to say. I don’t have all day as you can see, I am busy,".

"I heard you’re seeing a counsellor with Noah this morning. Something about you and him trying to fix your marriage but honey I think it’s going to be a total waste of time," she purred, eyes glittering with poorly masked malice. "Well, your beloved husband called me to his room this same morning and we fucked. Not just once...over and over and again until I had to leave myself,".

The word hung in the air and of course, I felt anger course through my veins at her words. I wasn’t angry that she had slept with Noah again... at his point, I’m past caring who he sleeps with, I was just so angry that I was sharing the same dick with someone like Brooke. But there was no doubt that she was intending to provoke a reaction from me. Instead of giving her the pleasure that it affected me, I ignored her.

Seeing I remained impassive, she pressed on. "You do not care for him so much these days. This therapy charade is just an effort to keep up appearances and give you hope that he still wants to make it work between you too," she tsked derisively. "But believe me, Selene... it’s me he wants. He kissed me in the presence of the other Kings and pack elders. It’s so painfully obvious and honestly, I pity you a lot. I know how degrading and how sad it is for you. Seeing that you’re a woman with baggage and love will not come to you as easily as it will for someone like me,".

A small, serene smile curved my lips as I regarded the woman before me – I could sense her desperation from a mile and I didn’t need anyone to tell me she was looking for validation and to get that, she resorted to playing petty mind games.

"You don’t need to tell me any of that, Brooke," I said evenly. "Do you know what you sound like? A little girl who was given a piece of candy and now rushes to show it off to all her friends. First of all, we’re not even friends... I only knew about your existence when Noah was making a passing statement about the kind of woman he wouldn’t want to be with and second, I don’t care about you,".

Her nostrils flared but I continued, I didn’t want her to talk until I was done. "If you’re so sure about your position in Noah’s life, you wouldn’t feel the need to come announcing it to me like a bragging child. I am so sure of my standing, which is why you don’t see me running around proclaiming it to the world when Noah doesn’t even rate you as much as you rate him,".

I paused and allowed my gaze to rake all over her in clear dismissal. "By the way, Noah comes to you because you’re simply ... available and easy to be with. The nearest pleasure bank to satiate his need when the mood strikes," I shrugged. "If anything, I should thank you for providing that outlet for him so I can focus on other duties required of a Luna,".

My smile took on a mocking edge as I cocked my head and arched my brow in her direction "Unless... You’re delusional enough to think you could someday replace me as a Luna?" As she didn’t respond, I threw my head backwards and laughed "Wait as a second! Do you want to be me so badly?"

The words struck her like a physical blow as her entire body seemed to quiver with rage. Her lips trembled as she pointed a finger towards me. "You think I can’t?" she snarled; jaw clenched. "What do you take me for, Selene? I could easily become the new Luna in a matter of days if I put my mind to it. Don’t you dare test me,".

Rather than recoil from her rage, my smile grew wider and more indulgent. "If that’s truly what you believe..." I said, taking a measured step towards her. Our bodies were nearly flush now as I looked down into her blazing eyes "Then let’s put it to test, shall we?"

Her chest heaved with short spasms of breaths, her gaze faltering slightly but she held my stare as I laid out the challenge. "Here’s the wager. If you can make Noah divorce me and publicly acknowledge you as his mate within one month, I’ll leave. I’ll step aside and let you take the Luna’s position you so desperately crave,".

My tone took on a lethal edge "But if you fail? If Noah remains bound to me after that period has elapsed? Then I will personally ensure you and your entire family are exiled from this pack. Condemned to the life of desperation that awaits you without a pack or territory,".

Leaning in until my lips were a hairs’ breadth from her ear, I allowed the full implication of my words to settle in.

"Joining a new pack these days is nearly impossible for an outsider, a non-original member," I breathed. "You and your family will be left to fend for yourself as rogues and honey, you don’t want to imagine what life outside the pack is. A life without maids or monthly allowances and stipends,".

I pulled back just enough to search her expression. To my surprise, her features seemed to have solidified into a mask of cold determination. "Don’t test me, Selene," she hissed through gritted teeth. "I can make any man submit to my will and Noah will be no exception. I have done it before and I will do it again,".

A cruel smile split my lips at that "By all means, my darling Brooke..." I gestured with my hands "Give it your best shot. Let’s finally put an end to this ridiculous tussle between us once and for all,".
