Chapter 67: Love lost.

~Dahlia’s POV~

My skin buzzed with emotions whose names I couldn’t even place my finger on. I was all smiles, forgetting that I was still kneeling as everyone began to stride out of the courtroom whilst talking amongst themselves. And while very few people seemed genuinely happy with the outcome, a vast majority was pissed.

The Grand Elder— whose name I just found out was Mateu— seemed totally pissed, and before stepping out, he’d stopped to glare fixatedly at me, taking in my entire length in one dragged glare, as if promising me more torture in the future.

But right now, I didn’t care so much about him. All I was thankful for was the fact that I had been spared, and that I wouldn’t have to be treated like some runt anymore.

However, I was snapped out of my reverie when I heard the unmistakable sound of heels clacking against the marble floor, and I looked up just in time to see Ms Jennifer strutting over, her expression as dark as the clouds on a stormy evening.

Before I could react, she slapped me hard across the face and shouted; "Whore!"

But I was too stunned to speak. I was even too shocked to talk back to her. My face stung as the aftershocks of her stinging slap rippled through my skin, leaving behind a heat that wasn’t just from the slap—but from the humiliation that came with it.

I gasped.

"Oh, don’t act so surprised! Don’t pretend like you weren’t aware that the vegetable Alpha would come to your aid!" She spat, causing me to reel in shock—not because she’d accused me but because of the way she’d referred to Alpha Zarek. My eyes widened.

"Now, cat got your tongue for real!" She snickered, "Now, you’re playing dumb right?"

"No, a cat didn’t." I spat back, feeling my rage begin to sizzle through me again. "I just do not have any words to say to you."

She gasped, as if visibly struck by my words. She spun around just then to go latch her arms around Beta Orion’s and then she pointed at me; "You can see just how she talks to me?!" She screamed loudly, "She has no respect whatsoever!"

While she spoke, I paid no attention to her but to the male whose arms she had wrapped around hers. I paid attention to his stiff body and to the way his cold eyes roved my body as if searching for something. I noticed the way he wouldn’t look away, and the way he acted like I had betrayed him or something.

And if I was someone of greater status, maybe I would’ve slapped him.

I glanced away. "I didn’t hit her. She came for me again."

"And I will continue until you know your place around here!" She snapped darkly but still, I didn’t turn to acknowledge her.

"Says the person who doesn’t know her place around here." Another voice called out and from the way my body instantly responded to the sound, I knew exactly who it was even without checking. "So tell me, who will discipline you until you realize your place around here?" He asked, coming to sit on a chair not so far from where I and the rest stood, his eyes fixated on me.

"Hmm?"

Ms Jennifer’s gaze darkened just as her face turned into a bright shade of pink.

"She and I are of different societal backgrounds. She’s a foreigner and you would not even be taking her side right now if you hadn’t lost your memories!" She spat; and as soon as the words slipped past her lips, the entire room went dead silent.

No one moved nor spoke.

It felt like a bombshell had been detonated, plunging the room into a silent chaos and freezing everyone in place.

Alpha Zarek was the one to break the silence. He let out a derisive snort as he then turned to me. "I’ll have a few maids tidy up your new room. I think you should also go back to your old room and pack whatever’s left there for you." His eyes were on Beta Orion when he added; "...you can also bring your child to the main house now."

At those words, I let out a sigh of gratitude. My knees found the floor before I even knew what I was doing and my head dropped. "Thank you so much, Alpha!" I rushed out, my heart brimming with so much joy, "thank you very much!"

"You can rise now, Dahlia." He drawled, "And be quick with what I ask of you."

"You’re not ignoring me, are you?!" Ms Jennifer’s annoyingly high pitched voice snapped me back to the present, and it seemed to do the same to Alpha Zarek too because then he turned to her, his face a mask of indifference.

"What?"

"You’re empowering the slave, and I do not care if you have no idea—"

"Why do you waste your time trying to convince a vegetative Alpha?" He drawled, his voice barely above a whisper. But I heard him. And Ms Jennifer heard him too because her face instantly lit up, and I do not mean that in a good way.

"I didn’t mean it the way it soun—"

"I don’t give a damn how it sounded. Get out of my sight!" He growled in her face, causing her to flinch back in shock. Even I was taken aback.

I wasted no more time listening to their conversation as I immediately rushed out of the room to do as Alpha Zarek bid me.

And as I left, I couldn’t help but feel Beta Orion’s eyes drilling holes to the back of my skull.

The way he watched me made me uncomfortable. It put me on edge, and it made that sizzling anger I fought so hard to contain come dangerously to the surface.

Ignoring how he made me feel and their shenanigans altogether, I shut the door behind me and slipped away, whilst praying to the moon goddess that I could slip out of his life the same way.

She never listened to my prayers.
