The Alpha's Omega Mate-Chapter 68: Realization.
Chapter 68:
It was in the wee hours of the night when a gust of wind howled through the trees, bending branches and scattering dead leaves like whispers of an impending storm. The clouds gathered thick and low, like a cloak— one made from silk and thick wool.
And Nyx’Zariel rose with the wind.
Her heart churned like the sky—wild, stormy, restless. Her mood was as dark as the alleyways no one dared to walk, the places where nightmares hid in the corners.
She had slept too long. Her strength—buried, dormant—had grown quiet over time. Too quiet. Her powers, once raging, now curled inside her like fiery lights now waiting for breath.
But now... now was the time to rise.
Glowing strands of red whipped across her face as she tilted her head toward the roiling sky. Her nightclothes clung to her sweat-soaked skin, thin fabric revealing the outlines of her pale beautiful skin.
Like this, she could vividly see her bluish veins glistening like stars in the galaxy, but tonight, they didn’t sizzle with power, they sizzled with the will to come alive.
They sizzled with strength untapped.
From deep within her chest, a sound tore free—not quite a scream, not quite a sob. A raw, trembling cry of fear... and something else; something that words could never describe. The sky answered in kind, unleashing a thunderclap so violent it rattled windows across miles. Lightning split the clouds like the opening of a great eye.
Worlds away, in a quiet home nestled in the city’s heart, a dainty woman jerked awake.
Panting.
Sweating.
Her fingers, clammy and trembling, swept across her face. She tried to calm herself, but froze mid-motion, as soon as her eyes caught the sight of her bluish veins.
Her skin buzzed.
Her veins—blue as the midnight sky— lit up beneath her skin. Her eyes reflected a strange light, pulsing faintly with something she didn’t recognize. Or perhaps something she’d always known but never understood.
Her body sizzled, spasming with energy. And she knew then that she was different. She knew that something had changed inside of her.
A dormant part of her had been awakened.
-
Dahlia rolled off her small bed, smiling when she noticed her daughter curled up beside her. For the first time in a long time, she had the chance to share her bed with her daughter— and this was possible because of Alpha Zarek.
Her heart felt full. She was grateful to have everything she wanted, so why the hell could she not find sleep?
Why the hell does it feel like there was something amiss?
As if in a daze, she slipped out of her room and into the now quiet hallway of the house. Glancing around, she noticed the absence of another living being. There was no light. No one. Not even an animal around.
She should return to her chambers, that she knew, but for some reason, she just could not. She felt possessed. Forced to walk down this eerie hallway.
From how dark the walls of the fortress were, and the stillness that seemed to cling to the walls like a cloak, she knew it was late— too late in the night to be awake, but here she was. And something had woken her up.
Slowly, she made her way outside the house. The moon cast a ghostly shadow over the lawns but she wasn’t afraid. Not like she had anything to fear.
She could hear the thumping of boots at the far end of the fortresses fence— signifying the busy night guards as they tended to the walls, protecting the house. She could hear the sounds of distant thunderclaps— signifying beginnings of an earth shattering rain.
These were enough to send her running back into the house, enough reason to have her coddling up her daughter, but she didn’t. She felt awakened. Her skin buzzed with an energy she’s never felt before. And her body— even though had been previously beaten to a pulp by Ms Jennifer and that stupid guard— felt alive. It felt strong. Felt free.
Far away, she could hear the distant howls of wolves running free, and for the first time in her life, she resonated with them.
She wanted to run free just like they did. She wanted to be one with them.
Even though deep down, Dahlia knew that she could never shift as an Omega, she forced her eyes closed. She forced her breath to be still, she channeled all of her sizzling energy into that thing which she could never see.
And for the first time in her life, she heard it.
A cracking sound.
And at first, she snapped her eyes open, thinking that there was someone close by, that there was something watching her. But there were none. All she heard were the hooting of owls.
The sound she’d heard had come from within; and it marvelled her. Enthralled her.
She tried again and this time, it came faster. Silvery furs sprouted from places that were once covered in pale creamy flesh. Claws protruded from fingernails that were barely longer than her eponychium and whiskers sprung out of the skin that were once her cheeks.
In the place where a beautiful woman once stood, a large wolf with silver furs now occupied.
She howled for the first time. Her paws hit the earth for the first time. And the feeling was exhilarating.
For the first time, Dahlia ran free. For the first time, she reveled in that feeling she’d only read about in books and listened to people gossip about. And she loved it.
But something didn’t feel right.
Somewhere deep within, she felt like this wasn’t her first time doing these things. It felt as though she’s walked this path before... lived in it. Enjoyed it. And she doesn’t understand why.
It wasn’t until she stopped by a small glassy lake by the outskirts of the pack that she finally realized what this was. What the nagging feeling in her chest was all about.
She knew then that it indeed was not her first time doing this.
And now, it was clear as day. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
This was the place she’d killed that middle aged woman all those nights ago. The same lake where she’d shifted at for the first time— where the woman had seen her and turned to stone.
Now she couldn’t help but fear that she had suspected the wrong person for so long.
She’d always thought that Nyx, the Alpha’s first love, was Nyx’Zariel. But she was wrong. She was the force she’s grown to fear. The one whose name sent shivers down everyone’s spines, instilling them with a kind of dread that made them forget words.
She’d killed the guard sent to kill her and revived his mourning lover.
She was a weird force
And now, her heart hammered against her chest as the realization dawned upon her.
But there was something else...
Someone was fast approaching!
Someone else might see her. Someone who might soon turn to stone.
