Chapter 25: Ch 25: The Threat

If the director was going to go down, he won’t go alone without a fight....or that was what the director likely thought when he threatened Damian.

A desperate man cornered — and a cornered man was always the most foolish.

And his threat would have been super effective had he said it to anyone else. But Damian had too many resources at his disposal to make this place disappear and not get caught.

One command from him and this entire orphanage would become a rumor, nothing more.

I had once taken a look into Damian Black’s family, just to know what they were capable of as a possible rival...and the second I started to scratch the surface, I decided to look the other way around.

Some doors weren’t meant to be opened — and the Black family guarded theirs with blood.

It was also unanimously decided that no one would go after their business if they valued their life and reputation. Even the most powerful corporations bent their necks around them.

The amused smile on Damian’s face told me all I needed to know about this situation—he was biding his time and wondering how he should make these people suffer like predator watching prey that didn’t realize they’d already died.

Damian’s eyes met mine and he flashed me a calm smile before he crossed his legs and pulled me by his side. Casual dominance, claiming me without saying a word — and forcing the director to watch.

"Hmm, what to do now? I do not care about my reputation even a single bit, but I cannot allow my fiance’s reputation to be tarnished. I guess I have no choice but to stay quiet for now....But are you sure you will be able to go against me?"

Damian asked in a threatening voice. He looked at the director and the director nervously chuckled to hide his fear.

The laugh of a dead man trying to convince himself he was alive.

"Of course I will be able to. You might not be aware of this, but I have a lot of support behind me. Both, Mr. Tanaka from the Heavy Industries as well as Miss Ella, the head of Ministry of Security, are our regulars. They will always have my back."

The director bragged and I could not tell whether he was smart or stupid for doing this.

Giving names so freely — only someone who believed they were untouchable would be this reckless.

He was clearly telling us who worked with him. But the director was not done bragging and he decided that he needed to tell us even more.

Digging his own grave deeper with every word.

"That is not all. We have so much support so it will be best for you to turn a blind eye if you do not want to get involved with us."

The threat was clear and I felt tense. I was not worried about myself, mainly because I was a nobody right now. But I felt sorry for Damian, because I was the one who got him involved with this mess.

My involvement with him had consequences — and right now the consequences were staring us in the face.

If his reputation got tarnished, then it would be because of me. The guilt tightening around my throat like a noose.

"Damian, what should we—"

"It’s fine. I do not feel threatened, so you should not as well. As my partner, just give a confident look. I will resolve this mess."

Damian promised me as he whispered to me. His voice was low and his breath tickled my ear, causing it to blush red. I quickly placed my hand on top of my ear to hide how awkward I felt at this moment.

Even in the middle of danger, he could unravel me with a single breath.

The director noticed how close we were and still decided to push his agenda.

He mistook intimacy for weakness — and that was his final mistake.

"So, about these twins. Would you like to take them now, or should I—"

"We shall be taking our leave now. I don’t think I want to be here any longer. As for these kids, I might send someone to pick them up later."

Damian told the director before he pushed me up. He kept me close to his body as we exited the charity orphanage.

His silence was more terrifying than shouting — the calm before the storm that would drown them all.

The secretary was waiting for us outside the door and she looked behind us, noticing how we had not brought the kids out with us. Her look of surprise lasted only a few seconds before she quickly came to attend us.

She sensed something had gone wrong — her smile looked like a trembling mask.

"Please give me my phone back now." 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

I told the female and she did not hesitate to hand our phones back. Damian grabbed his own as well and we exited the orphanage quickly.

Once we were safe, I quickly turned toward him and gave a small bow.

"I apologize. I did not mean to drag you into such a mess. I did not expect the orphanage to have such a dirty secret. You should not have to put up with this mess for my sake."

I told Damian and heard him sigh. Since my head was still bowed, I had no idea what kind of face he was making. But one thing was for sure, he could not be happy about what happened.

The silence stretched too long — long enough to break a person if they weren’t careful.

’Maybe Damian will finally decide that he had enough of me and cannot help me out anymore. I won’t blame him for it either. I would do the same if I were in his situation and I—’

A small smack on my forehead brought me back. The sudden pain made me blink and look up at Damian’s face.

"I do not know what you are thinking about, and I won’t ask you either. But if you are overthinking about something, don’t be. I was the one who offered you this job, and it is my job to protect you now."

Damian told me and his sincere voice and hard eyes made the fear inside me melt away. Somehow, I felt better about myself compared to before.

His certainty was dangerous — addictive — the kind that made you trust without hesitation.

"Besides, I had my eyes on this charity as well. According to some...information...I got, they have started to cause trouble in my territory as well. It’s time I nip them in the bud."

Damian told me and I felt a shiver go down my spine at his words. I could tell that Damian was not happy about the interference he was facing with his business.

The director and his allies didn’t realize they’d declared war — and Damian never lost a war.

’I see. So it is not fully my fault. That makes me feel so much better...’

I let out a sigh of relief at that. Somehow, I had a feeling that things would turn out just fine in the end as long as Damian was by my side. He would make sure to keep me safe.

Even if the whole world burned in the process.

"Now, shall we head home now? You must be exhausted physically and mentally. There are also some things that I need to look into."

Damian offered me his hand and I took it.

And with that single touch, I knew the real fight had only just begun.
