Chapter 41: Ch 41: A Visit to Anabella - Part 3

The walls of the prison were painted white and looked spotless. At the first glance, it was clear to tell that this place was not a prison but a hospital.

It was a place only wealthy and influential people could access, and Miss Anabella fit my mental image for a place like this.

"We are here. Please be gentle with our prisoner. She might have slighted you, but she has been in poor mental health ever since she came here."

The guard tried to invoke pity in us toward his ward. Perhaps he was afraid that Miss Anabella would try to do something to herself if she were to see us.

"Stop yapping and open the door. It is your responsibility to make sure the prisoner reaches the courthouse. Don’t shirk your responsibility on us."

Damian reminded the man before he slammed the door open.

Anabella flinched at the loud noise, but she did not take her face out of her folded hands. She was curled up on her bed with her arms pulled around her legs and her face hidden from us.

"R-Remember, be gentle—"

Damian slammed the door shut and locked it so that no one would be able to disturb us for some time.

Then, he turned to look at where the camera was and looked directly at it.

"Turn this off as well. I am not fond of having my woman be recorded without consent."

The light in the camera turned off as well.

I was not sure whether there were other listening devices around the room or not, but from my past experience with Damian, I could tell surely that he would take care of the clean-up.

Anabella did not look at us when we entered the room. She kept her face hidden in her arms and her body shook. She was pretending we were not in the room.

"Pretending as if we are not here is not going to make us go away, Miss Anabella. It will be better if you talk to us. We may be able to help you get out of here."

I offered her a helping hand, but the female did not raise her head for a single second. I was not even sure if she was listening to us at this point.

"There is nothing we can do here anymore. Let’s leave for now. What is going to happen to her next is up to her."

Damian concluded as he placed a hand on my shoulder. I could not tell whether he meant to make me feel better or play good-cop-bad-cop here, but his voice made Miss Anabella look up.

Her red eyes met his for a single second and accusation colored the female’s eyes before she looked down.

From her actions, I concluded that our coming here had been useless. It was time for me to head back.

"Miss, think carefully and make your decision. You still have until tomorrow to change your destiny."

I reminded her for a second time, but the female did not reply. Ultimately, I decided to give up as well.

After all, I could persuade someone, but I could not use magic to change someone’s mind.

And while Miss Anabella was one of the best ways to get my hand on some potential dirt on Rose and Karl, I was also not heartless enough to force a grieving woman to speak up.

"All done?"

The guard waiting outside the locked door asked us as soon as the door was unlocked. He looked inside the room but likely saw nothing but the image of a broken lady crying her eyes out.

Damian closed the door behind himself as he nudged me to move forward. I followed, not answering the guard.

The driver picked us up as soon as we left the room. I could read his desire to ask us what happened. But Damian’s sour expression made the driver flinch.

"Get driving. Also, contact my lawyer and legal team. I have a job for them."

I wanted to talk to Damian, but now did not feel like the best time to do that. His expression made him feel like a dog ready to bite any second.

As soon as we reached home, Damian tugged me back inside and locked the door behind me. He looked far tenser than when we had gone to the prison and I was almost sure there was a reason behind it.

But if there was, Damian chose not to share. He only locked the door from the outside and gave me strict orders.

"Do not leave this house at any cost. And do not open the door for anyone. Do you understand?"

And just like that, Damian was gone and I was left alone.

I almost wanted to defy him and head out. But my logical side was much stronger than I expected.

My hand froze as soon as it touched the doorknob and I let go of it.

"Well, I can forgive Damian this time. Thinking back on it, he had always been a logical person...even if he came across a little shy at times. I am sure he has his reasons this time as well."

Once I was done convincing myself, I went back to my bed and decided to do more research. I wanted to see what kind of reaction the people were having with all the new information.

As I expected, the situation was not as in my favour as I wanted it to be. There were a lot of people who called this whole situation a misunderstanding and defended Anabella.

Then there were people who came after me and Damian, calling us out for going after charity workers. This minority was small but vocal...

And also annoying. They were spamming most of the public spaces, be it below videos or other articles.

I was not in a mood to butt heads with these kids, so I decided to go to sleep. I could deal with all the problems tomorrow...hopefully...
