Chapter 44: Ch 44: Rose...Why would you betray me like this?

Rose’s pov

’Ugh, this place is just as bad as when I first walked in. Why did I have to be so gracious and kind as to visit a criminal of all people? Is there truly anyone as kind as me?’

I looked at the pitiful person sitting in front of me. Miss Anabella had been a respectful figure in high society just recently, but now she was like a wilted flower that could not even raise her head.

Truly, how the mighty have fallen so low.

"M-Miss Rose, you are finally here? Are you going to help me out? T-The guards tell me that I have a death penalty waiting for me. But you p-promised to save me, right? All I ever did was help you and do as you asked me to...."

Anabella tugged at Rose’s skirt as she asked this. Her eyes were filled with hope and longing as she looked at Rose for help.

But all Rose felt was annoyance and irritation at being touched.

"Miss Anabella, please do not touch my dress anymore. You have lost that right the second you touched this filthy place. Also, the one I promised to help was my ’friend’, but you are a criminal now. Surely you are not the same person as my friend."

I told the older female, and Miss Anabella let out a startled laugh. Her eyes shook as she tried to look at me.

"D-Don’t say that-! I am still the same person. Besides, you were the one who told me-"

"Oh-! So it is my fault now? You have truly fallen so low, Anabella. I am not even sure if I recognize you anymore."

I told her, and Anabella’s eyes widened in shock.

"N-No-! Don’t say that. I did it all for you. It was all for your sake..."

She tried to tell me, but I just shook my head.

"That’s what you told yourself—that it was all for my sake. But in reality, you wanted to do all this as well. You got a taste of power and wanted to not give it up. Now, I need to go now. I just wanted to see you in your last moments. I hope your journey from here is a pleasant one."

"Please no-! Listen to me-!"

Anabella tried to stop me, but I closed the door before she could reach me. My work here was done and all the evidence had been removed.

As for feeling guilt over this? Why would I feel guilty for this? Miss Anabella had always been unstable, and she finally showed the world her true colors. I was just... saving the world from her unstable self. Nothing more and nothing else.

________

Jenna’s pov

The court case had ended, but something about this whole situation still did not feel right to me.

Why would Miss Anabella, someone who had a solid case in her favor, decide to throw everything away and admit everything? From the looks of it, neither her supporters nor her lawyer seemed to know what happened.

’How suspicious. Should I look more into this?’

I asked myself just as Damian walked toward me. He had been stopped by a few officers because they wanted to talk to him, and he immediately wrapped his arms around me.

The warmth from his touch made my body melt as tension finally left my frame. But the presence of piercing sharp eyes made me act fast.

"Damian, I would like to visit Miss Anabella once more. Something about what happened does not feel right to me."

"I agree. I was asking the police for permission for the same thing. We can head there now."

Damian and I were on a similar wavelength. I... had never connected with a person like this before. But it felt nice to have someone understand you without you saying a single word.

The prison had a tense atmosphere, and the guards welcomed us back. They led us to Miss Anabella’s prison cell, but before we could enter, our guard turned around to give us a warning.

"I am not sure how stable of a mood Miss Anabella is in currently, but I would advise you to be careful with her. And if she attacks you, please yell immediately. We will come to help you out."

The guard assured us as we stepped inside the room. The room was well-lit, but the gloomy air in there made it feel dark.

Miss Anabella was curled over herself in a fetal position, her eyes looking at us but not at the same time.

"Miss Anabella, it is I, Jenna... Damian’s partner. I am here because I wanted to ask you some questions. Can you answer me?"

I asked, and the female finally looked up. All hope had been lost from her eyes, and what looked back at me was a blank-faced monster that seemed to have no will to live anymore.

"Y-You... Why are you here? Ah, have you come to gloat? I am sorry, but I no longer have a desire to talk to anyone."

The female spoke in a hollow voice. Her whisper was barely loud enough for me to hear.

As pitiful as she was being at the moment, it was something she had done to herself. So I did not really feel sorry for her. What I did want to do was offer her help.

"Miss, what has happened has happened. We can no longer change the past. But I am here to offer you a helping hand. You can decide your future."

I told her, and the female blinked as she looked at me... seconds before a startled laugh escaped her mouth.

"Future? What a joke? I no longer have a future. I am about to die in a few hours—"

"And we have the power to save you. However, it will not be for free. If you agree to help us and cooperate with us, then I promise you will get to live a new life. So, what do you say?"

I asked, extending my hand toward the female. It was up to Miss Anabella to decide now.

I did not need Miss Anabella’s help in my revenge, but I wanted it. Rose had used people I had trusted to make my life miserable, and I wanted to do the same.

One by one, I was going to take everything from her—her support, her fame, and her money. The only thing I won’t take is her life.

After all, she needed to learn as well what it meant to live in a state where you had nothing to rely on. She needed to go through the same thing as I did.
