By dusk, the jungle was no longer so sweltering, but the mosquitoes had multiplied. Sienna Johnson, though dressed in long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, found the thin fabric offered no defense against the mosquitoes’ long proboscises.
Sienna Johnson was a mess. Her face was dotted with several red, swollen mosquito bites, strikingly obvious on her fair skin. Adrian Desmond stopped and stared at this troublesome woman, saying nothing.
Sienna Johnson knew she was slowing him down and explained, "I’m sorry. I attract mosquitoes."
"We’ll see if you dare to run next time!" Adrian Desmond threatened fiercely.
Of course, she’d run!
SLAP... Sienna Johnson slapped her own face. The corpse of a mosquito, engorged with her blood, lay on her palm. She shuddered, hastily wiping it clean with a leaf. Adrian Desmond was angry with her, and she felt wronged; she had never endured such hardship in her life.
Adrian Desmond was wearing only a long-sleeved shirt. He took it off and put it on her, leaving his own upper body bare. "Let’s go!" he said. "Next time you run, I’ll throw you into the sea to feed the sharks!"
It had been a long time since Adrian Desmond had experienced such a humiliating chase, not since he’d come of age. His smooth-sailing days had turned to utter chaos ever since he rescued this woman, Mai.
"AH..." Sienna Johnson screamed upon seeing Adrian Desmond’s back.
That scream completely exposed their location. Adrian Desmond desperately tried to convince himself. This woman didn’t do it on purpose! Otherwise, how stupid would one have to be to scream in such a situation? Did she think her life was too long?
"You...! Shut up!"
Sienna Johnson covered her mouth, her eyes widening at the sight of a coiled, ferocious king cobra tattoo on Adrian Desmond’s back. The tattoo was so vivid it seemed as if a real snake were resting there. The king cobra tattoo covered his entire back. Sienna’s legs gave out, and she collapsed to the ground.
"Snake... There’s a snake..."
"What on earth are you doing?" Adrian Desmond was so exasperated he didn’t know how to scold her.
Their position was exposed. The enemy, following the sound, quickly closed in. Adrian Desmond hoisted up the woman—who was more a hindrance than a help—and broke into a frantic run.
This woman, Sienna Johnson, was not only no help but actively causing trouble. "AH..." She struggled against being carried, screaming. Adrian Desmond slapped her sharply on the bottom and warned, "Mai, if you don’t want to die, shut up NOW!"
"Let me down! Let me down!" Sienna Johnson was utterly terrified.
Sienna Johnson was slung over Adrian Desmond’s shoulder, her eyes locked in a horrifying stare with the king cobra tattoo on his back. It was an utterly terrifying sight; she had been deathly afraid of snakes her whole life.
"So you want to die, is that it?"
"Adrian, I’m terrified of snakes! I’m more scared of snakes than anything! Please, I beg you, let me down. I’m scared." Sienna Johnson’s voice was filled with a dread that bordered on collapse.
"Where’s the snake?"
A gunshot rang out. Adrian Desmond grunted, momentarily halting. Sienna Johnson seized the chance to slide off his shoulder. She would rather be caught by their pursuers than be carried by Adrian with that snake on his back.
"I can walk by myself. I really can."
Afraid Adrian Desmond would carry her again, Sienna Johnson took a few quick steps forward to prove she could run. When he didn’t follow, she stopped, turned to look at him, and asked, "Why aren’t you going?"
Adrian Desmond stood there, his expression somewhat strained. He took a deep breath and then caught up to her.
Adrian Desmond gripped Sienna Johnson’s hand tightly, pulling her as they sprinted madly through the dense jungle. Sienna periodically heard gunshots behind them. Due to the strenuous exertion, every breath sent a sharp pain through her lungs. "Adrian, I can’t run anymore."
"I’ll carry you!"
"I’m scared of the snake!"
Adrian Desmond shot her a fierce glare. He truly didn’t know what to make of her. "At a time like this, you’re still bothered by such trivialities?"
"Adrian, I’m really terrified of snakes!"
Adrian Desmond was panting heavily, looking utterly exhausted. He had no time to waste arguing with her. He pushed her into a thicket of bushes, instructing, "I’ll lead them away. You stay here and don’t move. I’ll come back for you then."
"Okay."
Adrian Desmond touched her face, a look of reluctance in his eyes. Sienna Johnson’s heart couldn’t help but soften. She whispered, "Be careful."
Adrian Desmond suddenly smiled. "I can’t bear to leave you, so I won’t die."
Sienna Johnson was somewhat bewildered as Adrian Desmond suddenly got up and dashed off in another direction. She squatted in the bushes, head buried between her knees like an ostrich, waiting for him to come and save her. He will definitely come to save me, she thought with conviction. I know he will.
「...」
She didn’t know how much time had passed. Darkness had completely fallen. Sienna Johnson heard the cries of wild beasts, and her heart quivered with fear. What if Adrian doesn’t come back and I get eaten by wild animals?
Something rustled the leaves, the faint sound drawing nearer and nearer. ROAR... It was the roar of a tiger! A tiger!
Sienna Johnson felt her blood run cold. How could I run into a tiger?!
The sound of the tiger’s paws stepping on leaves grew closer. A tiger’s sense of smell was very acute; hiding in the bushes would be useless.
Run? There’s no way I can outrun a tiger that lives in the jungle. What do I do now?
The sound of paws on leaves suddenly stopped. Through the foliage of the bushes, Sienna Johnson saw two green eyes. Those must be the tiger’s eyes.
"Adrian!" Sienna Johnson suddenly screamed and bolted.
It’s death if I don’t run, and death if I do! But Sienna Johnson still ran.
The tiger let out a deafening roar and lunged at Sienna Johnson. She desperately ran towards areas with obstacles; otherwise, her two legs could never outrun its four.
Every step was fraught with danger!
"A cliff!" Sienna Johnson shrieked. If she hadn’t stopped in time, she probably would have fallen off. The tiger behind her, however, was a bit more foolish. Seeing Sienna standing there, it pounced. Sienna dodged, and the tiger plummeted off the cliff.
"Heavens!" Sienna Johnson collapsed to the ground, her legs trembling. She had never experienced anything so thrilling in her entire life.
"Mai?!" Adrian Desmond caught up, dressed in camouflage and holding a gun. Both his hands were stained with blood. Seeing Sienna Johnson disheveled and sitting on the ground, his expression darkened further. "What happened? Why did you call my name just now?"
"I... I encountered a tiger!"
"And the tiger?" Adrian Desmond asked. Seeing Sienna Johnson was unharmed by any tiger bites, he finally relaxed.
"It fell off the cliff."
"You certainly are a lucky woman," Adrian Desmond remarked teasingly. "You fell into the sea and weren’t eaten by sharks. You encountered a tiger and actually managed to escape with your life."
"That’s right. If I had been eaten by sharks, you would have been overjoyed."
