The Bigshot Married Himself to the Heiress-Chapter 519 - 520: The Shackles of Morality
Grandpa Briggs looked at his resentful granddaughter, his gaze as sharp as a knife. He was more sympathetic to his biological daughter, as his granddaughter had always been estranged from the Briggs family. So, no matter how Grandpa Briggs looked at Sienna Johnson, he found her disagreeable.
"There are no perfect parents in the world," Grandpa Briggs said, his voice not loud but powerful. Each word struck Sienna like a slap to the face. "Even if your mother had her faults, as her daughter, it is your duty and filial piety to fulfill your role. Was it right for you to drive her to commit suicide?"
Samara defended Sienna, "Grandpa, my sister didn’t disrespect Mom. My sister has been good to her."
The Uncle glared at Samara. "This is a conversation for adults. It’s not your place to interrupt!"
Tears of grievance streamed down Samara’s face, and she cried harder. "I’m already fourteen, and I’ll be fifteen in a few months! I’m not a child anymore!" She continued tearfully, "Please stop scolding my sister. She didn’t want Mom to commit suicide either. My sister is sad too..."
Seeing her sister gasping for breath through her tears, Sienna couldn’t bear it. "Samara, go outside and wait for a bit. I have a few things to say to Grandpa."
"I won’t leave!" Samara replied stubbornly.
"Don’t cry, Madam Johnson, it’ll be alright," Sienna comforted her gently.
Samara said irritably, "I’m just worried about you."
"Why would you worry about me? Do you think I’ll let someone bully me?" Sienna patted her head and gently pushed her towards the door. "Be good now. Go out first; I need to talk to Grandpa. I’ll be fine!"
Sienna’s tone became stern, her sharp eyes fixed on Samara. With red, tear-filled eyes, Samara glanced at her sister, brimming with grievance, then turned and ran out of the hospital room.
Still uneasy, Sienna turned to Adrian Desmond beside her. "Is Brett Jacobs outside? Ask her to go with Samara."
"Mm," Adrian replied, taking out his phone to message Brett Jacobs. However, Aaron Faber intercepted the message and grandly snatched Brett’s task.
After sending her sister away, Sienna revealed her tougher side. She asked, "Grandpa was right earlier: there are no perfect parents in the world.
"Although I never wanted to be Madam Johnson’s daughter, the fact that we are mother and daughter cannot be changed.
"You came in and leveled accusations against me without knowing the full story, Grandpa. I don’t accept it!
"I admit, Madam Johnson and I don’t share a deep mother-daughter bond, but as her daughter, I have fulfilled my duty to support her. What more do you want from me?"
Grandma Briggs looked at her sharp-tongued granddaughter with even greater displeasure. "You think providing food is filial piety? Sienna Johnson, you truly are the picture of filial piety!" she said sarcastically.
"Then what more do you want me to do?"
Seeing that the two sides were about to have a falling out, Second Uncle stepped in. On one side was his biological sister, and on the other, his sister’s daughter. If their relationship truly fractured, Pauline Briggs would be the one most hurt in the end. This girl, Sienna, is very cold-hearted, not like Pauline or Dexter Johnson.
"We’re all family here. Let’s all calm down and not damage our bonds. We should talk things through properly..." Second Uncle tried to mediate, but Grandma Briggs was completely unreceptive.
"Second, whose side are you even on?" Grandma Briggs turned on her younger son. "Your sister’s life hangs in the balance, yet instead of siding with her and teaching this disobedient, unfilial brat a lesson, you’re defending her!"
"Mom, she’s not a ’brat’! She’s my niece, your own granddaughter!" Second Uncle glanced at Sienna, a sense of unease rising in him. The Briggs family had truly offended her today.
"She nearly killed my precious Pauline! I don’t have such a granddaughter..." Grandma Briggs, already advanced in age, gasped for breath several times as she cried. Sienna genuinely feared Grandma Briggs might faint, which would undoubtedly become her fault as well.
Though her heart was filled with immense grievance, Sienna could only suppress it for now. Softening her voice, she asked, "Since this has already happened, tell me, what do you want me to do?"
Grandma Briggs stated bluntly, "When Pauline wakes up, I want you to unconditionally agree to all of her requests."
"Alright," Sienna Johnson agreed without hesitation.
However, Grandma Briggs relentlessly continued, "Furthermore, you must kneel and apologize to Pauline, and you must swear that from now on, no matter what, you will not disobey her. Whatever she says, goes!"
"As long as Madam Johnson’s requests are not unreasonable, I can fulfill them," Sienna replied, adding a condition. It wasn’t that she wanted to be a disobedient and unfilial daughter, but with Madam Johnson’s temperament, if Sienna truly listened to her every word, who knew what would become of the Johnson family.
Grandma Briggs pointed at her angrily, threatening, "I’ve made myself this clear, and you still dare to talk back? Do you believe I can make your Eastminster Group disappear from Sileria City?"
"Fine, I agree!"
Only when Sienna agreed so readily did Grandma Briggs’s expression soften slightly. However, Second Uncle detected the flash of anger in Sienna’s eyes. This girl was not so easy to deal with.
Second Uncle sighed deeply. Realizing his words carried little weight, he said no more.
"Is there anything else?" Sienna asked. "If not, I’ll take my leave." She had been standing throughout the conversation. As a pregnant woman, standing for so long was very uncomfortable. Fortunately, Adrian’s arm had been around her the entire time, helping to support half her body weight.
"Sienna, we’re here. If you have things to do, go ahead and attend to them. If there’s any change in your mom’s condition, we’ll call you," Second Uncle said.
Sienna looked at her Second Uncle, who had consistently spoken up for her. He bore some resemblance to her mother and appeared to be in his fifties. He was well-maintained, not looking old at all. His physique, concealed beneath his suit, was excellent, clearly a result of regular exercise that had kept him from losing his shape.
"Leave? Where do you think you’re going?" Grandma Briggs interjected. "Your mom is still unconscious, and you, her unfilial daughter, want to abandon her in the hospital? Is that how a daughter should act?"
Second Uncle glanced at Sienna, who was visibly angry but restraining herself. He sighed. His mother was really just making things worse. At this rate, the relationship between his sister, Pauline, and his niece, Sienna, would only grow more distant.
"Sienna, don’t listen to your grandmother’s nonsense," Second Uncle said. "She’s getting old, and sometimes she oversimplifies things."
"You insolent boy! I’m your mother! How dare you lecture me?" Grandma Briggs raised her hand and slapped her youngest son. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
Being struck by his mother in front of the younger generation, Second Uncle felt deeply humiliated. He stammered, "Mom, I’m not a child anymore. Please stop hitting me. Sienna’s right here. If she sees this, how will I ever maintain my dignity?"
