The Bigshot Married Himself to the Heiress-Chapter 521 - 522: The Reason for Suicide
The Old Lady looked at her younger son sighing and felt annoyed. "Second, where is Sienna Johnson? Where the hell has she disappeared to?"
"I’ve already informed her; she’ll be here soon," Second Uncle explained.
The Old Lady said relentlessly, "What does she think she’s doing? The Johnson family is Pauline’s home too. Now that we, the Briggs family, are here, does she really plan to dump Pauline on us and just walk away?"
Second Uncle was speechless. If I’d known, I never would have brought her. She’s just here to stir up trouble.
"Mom, when Sienna comes, please speak to her kindly. You say whatever you want to get it off your chest, and that feels good for you, but what about Sister? Do you really plan to take Sister back to the Briggs family? Sister has to live with the Johnson family. If you upset Sienna, that girl will hold a grudge, and in the end, won’t Sister be the one to suffer?" Second Uncle earnestly advised.
Uncle chimed in, "It’s not like our Briggs family can’t support Pauline. If she’s to come back to the Briggs family, then so be it!"
"Eldest Brother, can you please stop stirring up trouble?"
Second Uncle was on the verge of tears. These people, every single one of them! Isn’t the trouble big enough already? Do they have to make it worse?
"Boss is right!" the Old Lady declared. "Does our Pauline have to be afraid of her? Does she need to suck up to Sienna Johnson just to live in the Johnson family? A daughter of our Briggs family is precious! How can she be treated so disdainfully?"
Pauline Briggs woke up. Hearing her family arguing nearby, she couldn’t distinguish reality from dream. She had planned to commit suicide. She had put on the dress she wore on her first date with Dexter Johnson and the jewelry he had given her. She had dismissed the servants and taken sleeping pills, intending to die quietly. But what is happening now? Am I alive, or am I already dead...?
Uncle looked at his sister with heartache. Her eyes were vacant as she stared silently at the ceiling.
"Pauline, it’s your Eldest Brother..." Uncle said to Pauline Briggs.
Only then did the Briggs family shift their attention from the argument to Pauline Briggs, all concerned for her.
Pauline Briggs looked at the familiar faces around her. Her vacant, lost eyes slowly began to focus...
"Dad, Mom, Eldest Brother, Second Brother... why are you all here?"
The Old Lady grabbed her daughter’s hand and burst into tears. "Oh, my poor daughter! You were fine, why did you try to commit suicide? You’re trying to take my life..."
"..."
"You cruel girl! If I had known you were so heartless, I should have strangled you when you were little! It would have saved me from you bringing me such misery! Why didn’t you just kill me first?"
The Old Lady was both heartbroken and furious. Her hair was already white; was this daughter trying to make her, a white-haired mother, mourn a dark-haired child?
"Mom, please don’t cry..."
"Why should I listen to you? Just let me cry myself to death! It’s not like you plan on caring about this old woman anymore, anyway."
Pauline Briggs had just had her stomach pumped. It felt very uncomfortable, and even breathing was painful.
"Mom, please stop crying..."
But the Old Lady’s tears were like a breached dam, simply unstoppable. Pauline Briggs began to understand just how annoying she herself must have been whenever she cried.
Looking at his pale-faced sister, Second Uncle felt his heart ache. He had wanted to scold her for being so foolish, but now he couldn’t bring himself to say a word.
"...Pauline, don’t do anything foolish like this again. Don’t you know? When you hurt yourself, you’re also hurting the people who love you."
Just then, Sienna Johnson pushed the door open and entered. Pauline and Sienna exchanged a glance, then both quickly looked away.
"Has the doctor been here? What did they say? Is Madam Johnson alright?" Sienna Johnson asked.
No one in the room answered her. Sienna Johnson didn’t seem angry; she simply said, "I’ll go find the doctor."
"Sienna!" Pauline Briggs called out, stopping her. Sienna Johnson looked at Pauline Briggs, her gaze as cold as a blade.
"Madam Johnson, you’re finally awake. You scared us all to death. Now that you’re awake, please tell everyone: why, when everything was fine, did you try to commit suicide? Did I, or our Johnson family, ever mistreat you so badly that you felt you couldn’t go on living and chose to kill yourself?"
Although Sienna Johnson was trying to restrain herself as she spoke, her tone was still laced with anger.
The Old Lady detected Sienna Johnson’s anger and, equally furious, retorted, "What kind of attitude is that? Your mother just woke up and needs to rest quietly! Have you no filial piety at all? Coming in here with such an aggressive tone, are you trying to drive your mother to her death again?"
"I just want to know the reason," Sienna Johnson said, looking at Pauline Briggs, her gaze demanding an answer.
"..."
"Madam Johnson, I want to know why you attempted suicide."
"Is there even a need to ask? She was driven to it by an unfilial daughter like you!" the Old Lady exclaimed indignantly.
Sienna Johnson ignored the Old Lady and just stared at Pauline Briggs. Her expression made it clear that she wouldn’t back down until Pauline gave her a proper explanation.
Pauline Briggs couldn’t believe she had been so inept as to fail even at suicide.
A wave of despair washed over her. "...Brother Dexter is gone. What’s the point of me living anymore? ..."
The Old Lady didn’t believe her daughter wanted to commit suicide just because Dexter Johnson was dead. "Stop using Brother Dexter as an excuse! Dexter Johnson has been gone for so many years, and you never once thought of suicide. Why suddenly now? What do you mean, ’because Brother Dexter is gone’? Weren’t you just angered to this point by this unfilial daughter of yours!"
"..."
"Pauline, don’t be afraid! Your father and your brothers are all here today. If you have any grievances, just tell us. We will back you up!" As the Old Lady said this, her eyes were fixed on Sienna Johnson.
In her heart, she had long since decided that Sienna Johnson was the main culprit.
Pauline Briggs stared at the ring on her ring finger and said slowly, "When Brother Dexter first passed away, I couldn’t rest easy. Samara was still young, and Sienna has a stubborn personality. She was raising a child and hadn’t found a good partner yet... With so many things to worry about, how could I possibly let go?"
"..."
"Now, there’s nothing left for me to worry about. Sienna is capable, and Adrian genuinely cares for her. Samara is grown up now. My sister and brother-in-law are also there, so I don’t need to worry about things in the future..."
"..."
"I miss Brother Dexter so much. I’ve been dreaming about him a lot lately. He must be very lonely. I want to go and be with him..."
When Pauline Briggs gave her reason, everyone fell silent.
Sienna Johnson had been seething with anger, but upon hearing Pauline Briggs’s explanation, the fire in her heart was extinguished.
Pauline Briggs and Dexter Johnson had a very good relationship.
Sienna Johnson attended an elite school. Which man from those wealthy families didn’t have affairs? The most common stories she heard were about some classmate’s father keeping a mistress and even having an illegitimate child with her.
But her father had always been faithful. Even without a son, he never considered having another woman bear him one. The Johnson family’s old madam was also very open-minded; though it was a regret, she never pressured her son and daughter-in-law.
Pauline Briggs’s life was so good it made Sienna Johnson jealous.
"Dad loved you so much; he would definitely want you to live well. If you really kill yourself, Dad will never forgive you," Sienna Johnson said in a low voice.
