Chapter 613: Chapter 654: Getting Beaten

He’d never imagined that day, passing by the sea, he would rescue a beautiful woman from its depths.

He’d never imagined he would fall in love with the woman he’d rescued from the sea.

And he certainly never imagined he would love her so, so deeply...

For her, he’d even forsaken his vows.

Did he regret it?

Adrian Desmond didn’t regret it in the slightest!

He was incredibly happy now; he even laughed in his dreams. He’d never experienced such joy in his entire life: a beautiful and intelligent wife, a lively and adorable daughter, and an unborn son... His only burden was guilt—towards his uncle, Elliot Carpenter, and towards Melanie Carpenter.

He was willing to compensate them in other ways, but his hand in marriage, he could give only to Sienna Johnson, and to no one else.

「...」

Sea View Residence. From here, one could overlook Abyanabad Bay.

When he was seven, his uncle had taken him to swim across Abyanabad Bay. When his mother found out, his uncle had received a harsh scolding from her.

Compared to his stern father, Adrian shared a deeper bond with his uncle.

Adrian Desmond’s car stopped at the entrance. The electronic iron gate slowly swung open, and the car drove in.

Looking at every plant and tree within, Adrian felt a poignant sense that while the place remained, the people had changed. He often came here to play as a child, bringing his younger sister, Paige Desmond. In those days, Paige and Melanie Carpenter would play together, while he practiced martial arts with his uncle’s subordinates. Those men hadn’t been lenient with him at all during martial arts practice; he often got injured. He would return home, his face always bruised. One time, his mother couldn’t bear it any longer. She summoned his uncle and berated him soundly, accusing him of abusing her son. He still vividly remembered how his uncle looked after being thoroughly lambasted by his mother. Spotting Adrian peeking from behind, his uncle had rubbed his nose and made a funny face at him.

"Sixth Master, we’ve arrived." Walter Klein, seeing Adrian Desmond sitting motionless in the car, prompted him.

"Mm."

As Adrian Desmond got out of the car, a child suddenly rushed over. "Dad!"

The child clinging to his thigh was none other than Devin Desmond. A feeling of revulsion, as if he’d swallowed a fly, churned in Adrian’s stomach. He discovered he didn’t like children at all, except for those he had with Sienna Johnson.

"I told you, I’m not your father!" Adrian Desmond said coldly and ruthlessly.

"Dad..."

Devin Desmond had grown much taller, but he remained thin and frail, almost like a girl. He resembled Melanie Carpenter more. Even so, Adrian Desmond still disliked him. That man, Jule, was a good-for-nothing who just idled his life away, waiting for death. If Adrian hadn’t been supporting Devin Desmond, this child would have starved long ago.

"Let go!" Adrian Desmond roared.

Devin Desmond, being timid, immediately released his grip and stood to the side, sobbing pitifully, looking utterly aggrieved.

"He’s just a child. Why are you being so harsh with him?"

Elliot Carpenter’s voice sounded. Adrian Desmond looked up and saw his uncle, whose hair he remembered as black and thick, now completely white. A pang of sorrow and bitterness shot through Adrian’s heart. He remembered his uncle from before—young, with dark, thick hair, and a warm smile in his eyes. The harsh, sharp-eyed man standing before him now was a stark contrast to the uncle etched in his memory.

"Uncle!" He strode towards him, his eyes slightly reddened.

Elliot Carpenter’s eyes were as cold as frost. His gaze upon Adrian Desmond held no trace of warmth, as if he were looking at an enemy, filled only with animosity and indifference.

"Do you still have the nerve to call me Uncle?" he challenged.

"I’m sorry!" Beyond these words, Adrian Desmond couldn’t find any others to express the apology welling in his heart.

Elliot Carpenter raised the cane in his hand and swung it fiercely at Adrian Desmond. Adrian could have dodged, but he didn’t move, allowing the cane to strike him.

If this would appease his uncle’s anger, Adrian didn’t mind his uncle hitting him a few more times.

"Adrian Desmond, how did I treat you in the past?... Huh? Because of your Desmond family, my own family was destroyed, and I lost everything! I entrusted my only daughter to you. What did you promise me back then? You said you would marry her, that you’d take good care of her and not let anyone bully her. And how did you treat her?

"Did you think that once I died, there would be no one to protect her, and you could bully her as you pleased?"

"That’s not it, Uncle."

Elliot Carpenter was truly enraged. He had no son of his own and had doted on his sister’s child as if he were his own flesh and blood. He had trusted him so deeply, yet Adrian had bullied his only daughter to such an extent, ultimately leaving Melanie Carpenter in a psychiatric hospital, a mere shadow of her former self, neither living nor truly dead.

"Adrian Desmond, I misjudged you!" This declaration was a complete repudiation of Adrian.

Blow after blow from the cane rained down. Several struck Adrian Desmond’s head. Elliot Carpenter struck with immense force; Adrian’s scalp was split open, and blood began to flow.

Walter Klein, standing nearby, was frantic but dared not step forward. He wracked his brain, but couldn’t think of anyone who could rescue the Sixth Master at this moment.

"Dad, stop!"

A woman’s voice cried out. Walter Klein saw Melanie Carpenter rush out and shield Adrian Desmond with her body. He couldn’t help but feel a surge of relief. The Sixth Master was saved! If Melanie Carpenter hadn’t come out to stop him, Elliot Carpenter might have genuinely beaten Adrian Desmond to death.

"This is none of your business! Get back to your room!"

"No! I won’t go! You’ll beat him to death!"

Elliot Carpenter pointed his cane at his daughter, his voice filled with bitter disappointment, as if lamenting that iron could not be forged into steel. "He treated you so badly, even sent you to a psychiatric hospital! And after all this, you still protect him! I don’t have such a spineless daughter! You’re not Elliot Carpenter’s daughter!"

"Dad, it’s not Sixth Brother’s fault! It’s all that Sienna Johnson’s fault! It’s all her fault! Dad, if you’re going to hit someone, you should hit Sienna Johnson! If it weren’t for her, Sixth Brother wouldn’t treat me this way."

Melanie Carpenter shifted all responsibility onto Sienna Johnson.

Adrian Desmond spoke up for Sienna Johnson, "It’s not Sienna Johnson’s fault; it’s mine! Uncle, please, continue hitting me!"

"Sixth Brother, my dad will beat you to death!"

Adrian Desmond stood tall, his back straight. Half his face was stained with blood, yet his eyes showed no hint of flinching.

"Good! Very good! Even at a time like this, you still speak up for that woman! I’ll kill you right now! After I kill you, I’ll dispose of that woman! I’ll let you two continue your inseparable companionship on the Underworld Road!"

As the cane swung down, Adrian Desmond caught it. "Uncle, you can beat me to death today, and I will have no complaints. But you cannot touch Sienna Johnson! I won’t let anyone harm her—not even you, Uncle!"

Elliot Carpenter had only recently awakened, and his body had not yet fully recovered. Adrian Desmond, however, was in the prime of his life. When Adrian gently pushed the cane, Elliot Carpenter stumbled and fell.

"Dad!"

"Uncle!"

"Adrian Desmond, get away from me! Don’t touch me!"

"Uncle, I’m sorry!"

Elliot Carpenter slapped Adrian Desmond hard across the face, using considerable force. Adrian’s cheek immediately began to swell.

Nevertheless, Adrian Desmond still helped Elliot Carpenter up. Elliot Carpenter, as if seized by madness, rained punches and kicks on Adrian.

"I’ll beat you to death, you ungrateful beast!"
