Chapter 623: Chapter 664: Hostage

"Sienna?"

Adrian Desmond received a call from Sienna Johnson, both surprised and happy. He never expected this woman to take the initiative to call him; he had thought she would continue to ignore him.

"...Javier Jervois, this place is beautiful. Where is this? I don’t think I’ve ever been here before."

It was Sienna’s voice, but she was saying something he couldn’t understand. Adrian asked, "Sienna, what are you talking about? Who is Javier Jervois?"

"Isn’t it beautiful?"

A strange man’s voice!

Adrian realized that Sienna was not talking to him, but to a stranger—a man named Javier Jervois. Sienna had only been in Abyanabad for a short time; it was unlikely she knew any men there whom Adrian himself didn’t know.

How could she be with a man named Javier Jervois?

"You still haven’t told me where this is?" Sienna continued asking, wanting Adrian to know her location so he could rescue her.

Adrian held his breath and focused, trying to determine Sienna’s exact location from the phone call. If the man revealed their whereabouts, Adrian could pinpoint their position immediately.

"Is where we are really that important? Just enjoy the beautiful scenery."

"It is beautiful..."

"If you go out to sea from here and travel fifty nautical miles, you will see even more beautiful scenery."

This voice sounded very familiar. Adrian was sure he had heard it somewhere before but couldn’t quite recall where.

"That boat is so beautiful—Poseidon 7836. Do you all use Western names for your boats here?"

Smart girl!

Adrian praised Sienna in his heart and quickly typed the information for Poseidon 7836 into the computer, sending it to Aaron Faber to find out where it was docked.

If he could find the docking location of Poseidon 7836, he would know Sienna’s exact position.

It seemed they were about to go out to sea. Adrian desperately hoped he could arrive in time to intercept them before they sailed. Otherwise, once they were at sea, finding them would be extremely difficult.

Abyanabad was fraught with danger. He shouldn’t have left Sienna alone just because he was angry, even with her bodyguard present. If anything happened to Sienna, Adrian would never forgive himself.

The call disconnected, and Adrian’s heart leaped into his throat again.

Aaron Faber worked efficiently, sending the exact location of Poseidon 7836 via the internet.

"Senorom Pier!" Adrian muttered the name and quickly dispatched his men to Senorom Pier. He himself grabbed a sports car from the garage and raced straight there.

「Senorom Pier,」

Sienna felt a growing unease and wanted to leave, but Javier Jervois insisted on taking her out to sea. She also sensed that something was amiss.

"Who are you, really?" Sienna asked, voicing her doubts.

"Javier Jervois!"

"Is that your real name?"

"It’s my real name, though few people know it. They call me... Night Owl!"

"Night Owl?"

He turned to look at her, his eyes holding a hint of blue, like chips of ice. Even when he smiled, it sent a chill down her spine.

"Yes, Night Owl.

"Night Owl is a codename my father gave me.

"Night owls are very cunning animals, always setting traps to lure their prey. They are also quite ruthless. Their cruelty is inherent; if a human trap catches a night owl’s foot, it will chew off its own talon to escape.

"My father wanted me to be a man who is hard on others, and even harder on himself!"

"You know my husband, don’t you?"

Sienna knew no one in Abyanabad. She didn’t think she possessed enough charm for a man to go to the trouble of setting such an elaborate trap just for her. When she visited the factory, she had felt something was wrong. The equipment was new; if the factory was truly failing and about to close, the boss wouldn’t have purchased new machinery.

She had thought she’d stumbled upon a great deal, but it turned out to be bait, and she was the foolish fish. Indeed, one should never harbor thoughts of taking advantage of situations; otherwise, you only end up paying the price yourself.

"I know him!"

"You have a grudge against my husband? Is that why you targeted me?"

"A grudge indeed! He killed my father. I almost died at his hands too." Javier Jervois seized Sienna’s hand, not allowing her to refuse, and pressed it against his chest, over his heart.

"Actually, when I see you, my heart should race. But my heart is artificial. No matter how intense my emotions, it always beats at the same steady pace."

Sienna stared at the man before her in shock. With modern medical technology, an artificial heart wasn’t such a remarkable feat. Many patients died due to their body’s immune rejection; to protect itself during organ transplantation, the body sometimes rejected the transplanted organ.

"Adrian—oh, he used to be called Bill—shot me right in the heart, destroying it!"

"Are you going to kill me?" Sienna felt the steady thrum of his artificial heart under her palm, while her own pulse quickened violently.

He took the hand that had just touched his heart, brought it to his lips, and kissed it lightly, his smile both charming and sinister. "I have a fondness for beautiful things. A woman as stunning as you... I truly couldn’t bring myself to harm you. Of course, that’s provided you behave..."

"Since Adrian Desmond killed your father, why don’t you seek revenge on him directly? Bullying a defenseless woman like me hardly seems like the act of a true man."

"Haha..."

She abruptly snatched her hand back, her mind racing. Escape was impossible. The sea was close, but if she jumped in, given her pregnancy, she wouldn’t be able to swim far.

"You don’t need to provoke me; I’m no gentleman to begin with. If you want to live, you’ll obey me. Otherwise, I’ll have to settle for the next best thing: preserving you as a specimen for eternity."

Sienna shuddered, a chill gripping her heart.

A speedboat slowly docked by the pier. Night Owl took Sienna’s hand again. "The boat’s here. Let’s go." He tugged her hand, urging her toward the speedboat, but Sienna resisted.

"Sienna, you’re a smart girl. You know what you should and shouldn’t do right now."

"If I go with you, I’ll have no chance of survival!"

Sienna looked into the man’s eyes. He had removed his glasses, and the veneer of gentleness he’d worn had vanished completely. He had striking phoenix eyes, beautiful yet terrifying. It was the primal fear of a small creature at the bottom of the food chain facing an apex predator.

The man before her was that apex predator, and she, the vulnerable prey.
