Chapter 79: Chapter 79: Old Enemies Come Knocking

Yelena Hughes unconsciously tidied her dress and hurriedly walked away.

The dining table was not big, just a rectangular one, with its long side against the wall, saving quite a bit of space.

Anne Hughes and Lindsay Walsh sat facing each other, with two side-by-side seats still empty.

Yelena Hughes quickly tugged at Anne’s arm. "You sit with me."

"Why?" Anne was sitting in her usual spot.

"He’s the guest..."

Before Yelena could finish her sentence, Jasper Yale strolled over, his long legs striding and taking up half of the bench.

He glanced at her. "Aren’t you eating?"

Lindsay Walsh brought out drinks and liquor, "Yale, what would you like to drink?"

The liquor was bought from the supermarket downstairs, and it was considered quite good, around 150 dollars for "Lan of the Sea".

Jasper Yale shook his head, "No alcohol for me."

"Alright, then have some soft drinks." Lindsay Walsh handed Jasper Yale a new set of bowl and chopsticks, all newly bought today. "Yelena, why are you standing there like a post? Sit down now."

Yelena Hughes sat beside Jasper Yale. Lindsay Walsh had prepared home-cooked dishes that tasted great, fearing to neglect the guest, she’d also bought a lot of marinated dishes.

"Yale, stop staring and start eating."

"Sure."

Jasper Yale picked up his chopsticks; he barely ate much. Lindsay Walsh raised her cup to toast him. "It’s all thanks to you that Anne can sit here and have a meal with us now, Yale. Thank you so much."

Jasper Yale picked up a disposable cup to give face.

But what he said made Yelena feel like she was on a roller coaster.

"The one who deserves the most thanks is your daughter, Yelena."

Lindsay Walsh didn’t think it odd and smiled with content, "Yes indeed, Yelena has had it rough with us. She’s the one enduring hardships and worrying constantly..."

"Mom." Yelena abruptly interrupted Lindsay Walsh. "Let’s not dwell on the past."

"Right, right." The coming days will all be sweet ones.

Jasper Yale glanced around; some spots on the walls were cracking and peeling. No matter how tidy an old house is kept, living in it wasn’t comfortable.

"Have you ever considered buying a new house?"

Yelena stuffed a mouthful of food into her mouth, her grip on her chopsticks tightening slightly.

Lindsay Walsh thought he was joking and said, "With such high property prices nowadays, who can easily afford one?"

"Oh?"

Jasper Yale drawled, his gaze sliding to Yelena Hughes beside him.

She, in turn, made a face at him, but he ignored it, "Who knows, maybe your daughter will surprise you one day. She seems to be doing well at work..."

Yelena quickly placed her hand on Jasper Yale’s leg and pinched hard!

She really exerted force, her fingers could feel the man’s leg bone.

"Mr. Yale," she wanted to say, can’t you keep your mouth shut while eating? "If you don’t hurry, the dishes will get cold."

Jasper Yale lowered his gaze, giving a sidelong glance at the thigh Yelena was pinching.

"Why didn’t you go to that place today?"

Yelena pinched even harder, "Didn’t I hear you were coming? A distinguished guest, I couldn’t dare be neglectful."

"Can you take leave from there?"

Damn, this mouth really can’t be stopped.

Yelena indeed felt a bit panicked; Jasper had no intention of exposing things, but the way this was going, it would definitely arouse suspicion, "Hey, this spare rib is good."

"Right, my mom’s steamed pork ribs are the best," Anne chimed in from the side.

"And try this shredded chicken?"

Jasper Yale observed Yelena Hughes’ expression; she was definitely flustered. She might remain stoic, but her eyes couldn’t deceive him.

The faint mole on the corner of his lips made his entire face look irresistibly seductive, and his lips slightly parted.

What was this mouth going to say next?

Yelena picked up the biggest spare rib and forcibly shoved it into his mouth.

Who cares if he liked it or not, she even pushed it in with her chopsticks. The rib lodged at Jasper Yale’s throat, and the glutinous rice on top nearly choked him.

"Yelena!" Lindsay Walsh hadn’t expected her to be so rough, "Why aren’t you using serving chopsticks?"

Would Yale mind this?

Seeing his mouth blocked, Yelena thought, can he be quiet now?

Jasper Yale stared at her with a grim expression, the rib fresh out of the steamer was still quite hot.

But the word "manners" forbade Jasper Yale from spitting it out outright.

With him silenced, Yelena found the meal suddenly much tastier.

"The chicken soup should be ready; I’ll go serve it up." Lindsay Walsh pushed her chair back.

Anne suddenly remembered something, "The pistachios Mom had me buy; I forgot to take them out."

Almost simultaneously, the two stood up. Yelena kept picking up dishes with serving chopsticks and putting them into Jasper Yale’s bowl, "Eat more, Yale."

Jasper placed his chopsticks heavily on the table.

He wore a sullen face.

Yelena watched him sideways, his cold aura could indeed frighten them.

"Calm down."

"I’ll calm down if you behave."

Yelena didn’t know what he wanted to do, and her brows furrowed slightly, "My mom thinks you’re refined and graceful, don’t do anything..."

Anything indecent.

"Open your mouth."

Yelena’s face flushed a bit, her lips pressed tighter.

Jasper shot her a glance, "What do you think I’m going to feed you? Here, what could I possibly give you?"

Really?

Then what he did to her in the bathroom earlier, what was that?

"Open your mouth wider."

Seeing her comply, Jasper Yale was satisfied, using his chopsticks to pile the food in her bowl into Yelena’s mouth.

"No need for your false kindness in serving me food, I don’t like any of this, back to you."

With her mouth full, Yelena couldn’t close it.

Lindsay Walsh emerged, seeing Yelena’s eating style and couldn’t help but comment, "There’s no one competing with you, why are you stuffing so much in one bite?"

Covering her mouth, Yelena chewed for a long time, barely able to swallow.

The chicken soup, freshly stewed, was about to be served by Lindsay Walsh.

"The chicken is sourced from the countryside, very fresh."

She had just ladled some into a bowl when the entire room plunged into darkness.

It seemed the power went out.

Yelena felt like she was under siege, soon after, a loud bang came from the kitchen. Jasper heard something fall, like a rock.

Lindsay Walsh was so frightened that she dropped the bowl of soup onto the table.

Across the table, Anne clutched her head and screamed, "Ah—"

Yelena stood up, her hand pressing down on Jasper Yale’s shoulder, her voice trembling slightly yet steady, "Sit still, don’t move."

It seemed she was used to such situations. She groped in the dark to the nearby cabinet to retrieve a flashlight.

A beam broke through the darkness. Yelena had prepared four or five flashlights, each now turned on. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Lindsay Walsh rushed over to hug Anne, both bearing an expression of terror, as if they wished they could find a place to hide.

"It’s happening again, those people have come again."
