Chapter 106: The Tutor’s Fate

Eternity wasn’t entirely sure what had transpired after the whirlwind of events that unfolded in the span of a few minutes.

Thankfully, Olivia’s confession happened a few minutes shy before their class ended, sparing them from the prolonged agony of an uncomfortable situation. To make things better (or worse, depending on how you look at it), Evan arrived soon after, and his obliviousness to the increasing tension between Eternity and Olivia only served to worsen the situation.

"I’m home," he said as he joined the two in the living room. "Where will we go this time?"

Of course, he still wasn’t aware of Olivia’s condition. He was still under the impression that he could join the duo’s acculturation expedition to the outside world, so he went home earlier than usual.

As soon as he appeared from view, Eternity’s gaze shifted to Olivia, noting the sudden shift in the girl’s expression as her features contorted into a sneer, a clear display of her disdain for Evan’s presence.

"I’ll be taking my leave," she announced abruptly, hastily gathering her belongings from the table and rising from her seat.

With a stiff smile directed at Eternity, Olivia adjusted her sling bag and offered a curt nod.

"I’ll see you next week, Eternity."

Eternity returned the forced smile with equal stiffness, nodding in acknowledgment as Olivia made her way toward the door without so much as a glance in Evan’s direction.

"Miss Wilde?" Evan called out her name, his voice tinged with confusion as he took notice of how rigid and cold the tutor was. "Wait--"

But his plea fell on deaf ears as Olivia exited the room, the sound of the apartment door slamming shut indicated that she was already out of her ear’s reach. He couldn’t help but feel offended at her outright refusal to acknowledge his presence.

Evan furrowed his brow in bewilderment, turning to Eternity with a perplexed expression. "What’s wrong with her?"

Eternity hesitated for a moment, torn between protecting Olivia’s privacy and addressing Evan’s legitimate concern. Ultimately, she knew Evan deserved to know the truth.

"Evan," Eternity began. "I have to tell you something."

Evan raised an eyebrow but gave her a look that showed he was willing to listen.

Taking a deep breath, Eternity recounted the events that had transpired between her and Olivia just moments ago. Despite the discomfort it caused her to reveal the details of their exchange, she knew transparency was necessary in this situation.

As she spoke, Eternity couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt at the thought that Olivia might have misunderstood the nature of their relationship. While they had developed a bond over the months they spent together, Eternity couldn’t deny the boundaries that existed between them—boundaries that Olivia seemed to have blurred in her own mind.

But there was nothing they could do about it.

"I... see," Evan muttered, his voice barely above a whisper, as if taking into account the weight of Eternity’s revelation, rendering his body momentarily stiff.

He sat on the sofa, his posture rigid, his gaze fixed on some unseen point in the room. When he finally gathered his bearings, Evan turned his attention to Eternity, a mix of confusion and concern on his face.

"What do you suggest we do about it?" he asked.

Eternity’s eyes widened in surprise at the question, not expecting Evan to seek her opinion on the matter.

"What?" she exclaimed, momentarily taken aback. "What do you mean?"

"I mean," Evan replied, running a hand through his hair in a gesture of frustration. "Should we fire her?"

"NO!" Eternity blurted out, her voice louder than intended, causing Evan to visibly flinch at the sudden outburst. "No," she repeated, but in a softer tone this time. "I don’t want that. She’ll get questioned at her university on why she lost her internship. You already know how hard things were for her because of her age."

"Eternity," he said. How he sounded so disapproving just by saying her name was beyond Eternity. "Each action has its own repercussion. She should’ve known better than to confess to her employer about her romantic feelings."

"Maybe she’s just confused," Eternity offered, attempting to defend Olivia. "You know how kids are. They easily mistake basic kindness for romantic interest."

Eternity, in fact, didn’t know about this herself but just made an assumption based on the coming-of-age books that she had read before. But surprisingly, Evan seemed to take this notion into consideration because he made a long hum of contemplation before speaking.

"That might be true," Evan conceded. "But she’s being regarded as older than her real age because of her educational level, so she should’ve acted accordingly."

Eternity opened her mouth to argue but found herself unable to form a coherent response. She wanted to defend Olivia and offer an alternative perspective, but Evan was absolutely correct, and Olivia brought herself to her own downfall.

"So?" he pressed on before repeating his question, his gaze unwavering. "What do you want me to do with her?"

"I..." Eternity crossed her arms helplessly, looking away from Evan’s penetrative gaze. "I honestly don’t know."

"Do you want me to talk to her?" Evan suggested, his tone gentle.

"She doesn’t like you." Eternity retorted, her frustration evident in her voice.

He snorted, an ugly sound that made her wrinkle her nose. "Most people don’t."

Eternity narrowed her eyes at his response.

"You know what I mean!" She said, sounding irritated.

Evan’s humorous expression turned serious in a span of a second. "Should I talk to Freiheit?"

"What for?" Eternity questioned, looking confused at the sudden mention of his adopted brother’s name.

"To seek guidance," Evan explained matter-of-factly. "Freiheit brought her to us, so he should be involved in resolving the situation he indirectly caused."

Eternity frowned deeply, failing to see the connection between Freiheit and Olivia’s predicament.

"How exactly can he fix this situation?" Eternity asked.

Evan gave her a knowing smile. "You’ll see."

His reply only left Eternity with more questions than answers. But seeing that there was no point in asking for more details from him, she could merely nod in acceptance.
